High Key Portrait Photography with Speedlights
Today, we're diving into some Hi Key portraits. I'm aiming for a modern look with a shallow depth of field, yet I want to keep the colors rich and the skin texture detailed. I'll be shooting wide open, but feel free to close your lens for more depth if you prefer.
I'm targeting a commercial, editorial vibe with a bright feel. This setup is perfect for high-volume shoots and works beautifully with any gender, skin color, and age.
I'm using small flashes, specifically the Profoto set, but any round head flashes will do. While one flash is enough, adding a second for background light adds depth to the images.
To keep colors punchy, I'll use a bare flash with a ½ stop diffuser to spread light evenly and avoid hot spots. The 4x4 diffuser covers a large area, giving me freedom of movement and illuminating both subject and background. I'll set it up high and angle it down, paying close attention to nose shadows, with the diffuser helping to keep shadows minimal.
The ½ diffusion maintains the hard light look but spreads light evenly across the face, providing nice contrast and definition. The strobe will be brighter in the center and softer on the edges, softening deep shadows and enhancing the portrait's overall look.
You can vary the depth of field from 1.2 to F8. I'll stick with 1.2-1.4 for a different look, keeping the eyes in sharp focus and the tip of the nose in apparent focus to not be a distraction being too soft .
Whether you go for a tight portrait or a ¾ shot, it will work perfectly, even for a two-person shoot.
