After learning a certain number of tunes by heart, and playing them regularly, you will start to automatically understand how certain chord progressions work instinctively. By playing them regularly and doing it by memory, your ears will also get connected to the sounds so that you start to “hear” and “feel” the chord progressions instinctively rather than thinking academically. This is one trait that all the really good players have in common. If you’re really serious about getting good, this is what you have to do. It gets easier and easier as you do it. The hardest part is the first step as it can be a little overwhelming, but I promise you that it quickly becomes second nature if you keep at it.
