This HYS 25 watt high-powered UHF (GMRS / ham) walkie-talkie is the highest power two-way radio I have found yet. This is a UHF "LMR" / commercial hand-held radio that can transmit on UHF, GMRS and (some) ham frequencies - IMHO, the ability to transmit on ham (70cm) and GMRS makes this HT the ultimate high-power survival and SHTF communications radio perfect for preppers or anyone that wants to be ready for an emergency. I show you the issues this radio has, I test the power output, and I test the transmitting range to see how far it can transmit.

No one told me how addictive this hobby is. I started in radio 6 months ago, licensed for 2 months now, and I started with a lowly UV-5R and Randy informing me about GMRS. Flash forward to today and I have 27 different handhelds, a 25w mobile in my girls car, a 50v2 in my car, a 50v2 as a base station, a spectrum analyzer, swr meter, a ton of antennas I don’t need, and all the accessories. I’ve been ordering a radio every week, Sunday my retevis RB-17P arrives. I’m so bad that I spend my time at night studying RF, Cold War numbers stations, GMRS, and even ham. I joined my local amateur radio club after getting ahold of them on their repeater (wouldn’t recommend just got lucky). I think my girlfriend is right and I may need therapy. Thanks Randy!

I can afford to do all of the above...I know exactly what you are saying. I was going to buy a bigger house and shop and just start hoarding all new equipment and hire someone to set it all up. See if I could fill the shop up with cool stuff. Get a few different antennas. Or i could just keep studying and never catch to the experts.

These radios are beasts. I programmed the first 9 channels for gmrs 15-22 and one repeater channel. Mine transmits full 25 watts at the pre programmed channels 10-12 on high and approximately 23 watts on the remaining 4 channels on high. On gmrs channels mine transmit at approximately 20 watts on high, 10 watts on medium and 5 watts on low. Very heavy duty, and work well with a cheap baofeng external mics.

@@csailor7632 channels 10-12 were preset to 401.995, 402.995, and 403.995 all with 88.5 tone. Channels 13-16 are preset to Random frequencies from 421-425 mhz. The original first 9 channels were from 428-435 mhz with 100 or 88.5 tones which I didn’t test wattage on.

Good reason for a self Destruct ON a radio would be if you constantly use it Outside in remote Locations that if you drop it or Loose it That when somebody Picks it up they can't use it Similar to Cell phones now you can set if your pass code or password is put in wrong 3 times You can setup the phone to Wipe all the data so your information isn't Stolen. Lease time is an attractive option for operational security when you use encryption. Not so much on a radio without encryption. Since I didn't hear you mention encryption I'd bet that got tossed in for marketing purposes. Amp hours is deceiving when you don't take voltage into account. This battery has three times the energy of a 4000ah battery in your cell phone. Watt hours is a better comparison. There's a general rule for radio. Only use as much power as you need. Do that and you should get pretty good talk time.

I am very new to using a GMRS radio and am a noob. Without the machine you hooked up to read the wattage how would I figure out which low settings to use. Could you list a few of the frequencies that would be full power so I could just use those ones. TY, btw you are my new favorite channel, so funny.

Yes, I love his sarcastic sense of humor. I am not sure what I like most, good information or good humor. I like his videos. Now for a self appointed KZfaq 'expert' to attempt to answer your question: This radio demonstrated is not a GMRS radio. GMRS radios are specially certified and marketed as GMRS radios. The radio he demonstrated is actually a commercial band radio. While these radios can be programmed to listen to GMRS radios, they are not intended for or allowed by the FCC to talk on GMRS frequencies. Also, GMRS and commercial licenses are two different things. Some radios that can use GMRS frequencies are restricted for listening only. If you want to talk on GMRS, get a GMRS license and radio. If you want to skip the licensing, get an FRS or CB radio. Using a commercial radio on GMRS can be complicated, requiring special programming and having legal issues. I hope that answers your questions. This guy has tons of great videos, with new ones coming out all the time. Happy watching.

On most all radios each channel can be programmed with either high or low power. Hence, the channels using high power will be the ones you decide on.

@@cedarhamilton Thanks for all the info. I have been studying and learning a great deal from his old videos. I actually ordered these and am hoping to get my GMRS as soon as the price drops to $35. It was still $70 a few days ago.

It's pretty easy to change the condenser pickup for a better one! And you can do it as well for the speaker... If the amplifier is not too bad it can be a good and cheap option as well!

I am curious if the antenna will hold up in the long term. Most handheld antennas are only designed to handle a maximum of 10 watts otherwise the loading coil can burn up. Also, the low mic audio could just simply be because the radio is set to narrowband FM by default and you talking on a wideband channel, which will cause your deviation to be too low.

I could see the self destruct being useful for a rental company. Once your rental agreement is up, if it kaputs, you're more likely to get the radio back. Also, since it is a business radio, i could see it being useful for keeping control of the radios. If you're only supposed to have a radio for a few hours, say to hand out to contractors working onsite, then you could get them to shut up at the end of their shift. If it no worky, they have to bring it back, so it doesn't go missing from the tool room all the time (not that anyone ever permanently borrows stuff from company stock)

There is a LEIXEN version of this with a digital screen and i think it holds about 500 memory channels. Same amount of watts, still think its UHF i believe. Would you be willing to do a review/educated background of the radio with the consideration if its worth having producing 25watts? I have read in a few areas its good for a really bad SHTF scenario (probably) but to use regularly might be dangerous? Is that an accurate assessment? Keep these videos coming!
