High Pressure Brings Nocturnal Bucks | Winke Classic Hunts - Dec. 21, 2012

This goes down as one of my favorite hunts of all time. Not because the buck was huge, but rather because he was old and had notoriously nocturnal. Loppy moved nearly a mile during the four seasons he was on the farm. Finally, on a high pressure night following a cold front, he came out during daylight. Drew Yarkosky filmed this one. Drew was the very first intern at Midwest Whitetail back in 2008 when he was still in college. He has gone to do great things in the content creation business and now works for Heartland Bowhunter.

Man Bill, you hammered him! Read the other comments. Stinks that ol’ Splits went ghost. But that’s what they do. Excitedly for the future sir!

Thanks Kaleb. I appreciate it. Yes, that Splits was going to be a really cool deer in a year or two. Have a great day.

So glad to see you creeping back into KZfaq. I only hope you’ve renewed the desire for making videos. It hasn’t been the same without you. Hope all is well.

Thanks. I appreciate. I am still deciding how far to go with this. It is a much greater grind than people might think. Obviously, I can start over and create another version of Midwest Whitetail, but I need to be committed to that because I know how hard that is and how much time it takes. I need to find a good way to produce meaningful content without as much time invested. I will put my thinking cap on and see where this leads. It will lead somewhere - I hope!

Loppy is one of my all time favorite Winke hunts. The snow, the old deer, the shot angle and way he goes down in that high grass is super memorable. I can't count the number of times I've gone back and hunted down this video on Midwest Whitetail.

Thanks Jeff. I love that hunt too partly because Loppy was so unexpected and he was a legend here even though (maybe because) we never saw him. It was fun hunting with Drew Yarkosky too. Drew was my very first intern.

The deer seem tame. They seem to hear your talking and see you, but aren't concerned.
@bill-winke

You have to keep it to a whisper. It is hard for them to hear it outside the blind when you have only a window or two open.

The happiness and raw emotion that happens after the shot is what brings a lot of smiles to viewers faces. Shows now days miss that and it takes away a lot of the excitement from the viewer. I’m so happy to see u back at it bill. I’ve been following you and MWW for quite some years now and the oldies to me are the goodies. Too much editing in my opinion takes away the pure excitement. Can’t wait to see more of this style filming and producing. Happy hunting from western ky!

Thanks. I really appreciate it. I agree. It is hard to produce something that raw on purpose. The more you learn the more you want to show those skills and the editing becomes too great. Those old raw videos when we had no idea what we were doing are pretty fun to watch. The "better" we got at filming and interviews the less that raw part of the hunt came through. I will post a few things along the way but don't have any plans of filming the actual hunts this year. Hope you have a great season.

Josh, all is well. I hope you are doing well too. I did shoot a really nice buck on a farm near my folks, so that was good. I still have not found anything to buy. I will continue to look. Have a great day.

Thanks. Agreed, but after that hunt I neve saw him or got photos of him again - unfortunately. I would have loved to see that buck again a year older.

Surprised that the deer don't hear you talking to the camera man.
@bill-winke

You have to whisper. Also, inside the blind the sound doesn't get out as easily as if it were in a tree on a still day.

My goodness Bill! Whatever happened with that Splits buck? Had splits on both G2s and G3s, and looked like he would eventually become a world class deer. Also, what a unique rack Flash Gordon had! Did you ever end up shooting him?
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 2 жыл бұрын
Never saw either buck after that season. Not sure what happened to Splits. I don't think he was killed by a hunter, but it is possible. He would have been a whopper the next season. I bet ol' Flash died of old age. He looked super old to me.

That is a cool deer and you are absolutely right--age and character make the trophy. Splits looks like he will be a great deer too, did you ever get him?

Thanks. Yes agree. No, unfortunately regarding Splits. I was really excited to see what he grew into, but he never showed up again, either during a hunt or on trail cams. Have a great Easter.

Disappeared. I was so looking forward to hunting him the next year or the year and after and that was the last we saw of him, no photos, nothing. Neighbors said they never shot him. Strange. Sometimes they die and we never find them.
