The chart competition among K-pop stars will intensify in just a few weeks, as some of the most anticipated singers release new music offerings later this month. Among the highly awaited lineup are girl groups like NewJeans and aespa, along with RM from K-pop powerhouse BTS and the boy band TREASURE.
NewJeans' new album, "How Sweet," is set to arrive on May 24. It will feature two tracks titled "How Sweet" and "Bubble Gum," along with instrumental versions of both songs, as announced by the quintet's management company, Ador.
The details about the lead track "How Sweet" have been kept under wraps, but NewJeans unveiled the music video of "Bubble Gum" on April 27, which surpassed 34 million views as of Thursday. It exceeded the 5-million milestone less than 13 hours after its release, demonstrating the group's unwavering global popularity despite the ongoing management rights dispute involving Ador and its parent company, HYBE.
Following the release of "How Sweet," NewJeans will make its Japanese debut with the album titled "Supernatural" on June 21. The lead single of the same name samples "Back of My Mind" (2009), a collaborative track by pop star Pharrell Williams and Japanese singer Manami. Producer 250, known for NewJeans' 2022 mega-hits like "Attention" and "Hype Boy," has infused a new jack swing style into the tune, giving it a fresh interpretation.
BTS' leader RM, who is currently fulfilling his mandatory military service, will also drop his second solo album, "Right Place, Wrong Person" on May 24. BTS is represented by Big Hit Music, a subsidiary label of HYBE.
RM's new album will mainly portray the moments when people feel like they are "a stranger who cannot fit in." It carries 11 tracks of alternative music genre, which all boast rich sounds. RM participated in penning the lyrics of all of them.
On May 10, the 29-year-old unveiled the music video of "Come back to me," one of the songs to be included in his upcoming album. It was directed by Lee Sung-jin, who won an Emmy Award for Best Director for his Netflix series, "Beef" (2023). The clip has garnered more than 10 million views as of Thursday.
"Come back to me" is an indie pop song exploring the contradictory emotions that people experience as they try to make a choice between challenge and complacency.
"The upcoming album, which is RM's first solo release in about 17 months, will also present a collaboration that breaks down the boundaries of art," Big Hit Music said in a statement. RM's first solo album, "Indigo" hit shelves in December, 2022.
On May 27, girl group aespa is poised to unleash its first full-length album, "Armageddon." According to its agency SM Entertainment, the 10-track album will be fronted by two lead singles: "Armageddon" and "Supernova."
The quartet heightened anticipation among fans by unveiling "Supernova" two weeks before the album's release. Upon its release on May 13, the catchy dance track quickly climbed multiple streaming charts at home and abroad, reaching the No. 6 spot on the real-time chart of Melon, a major streaming service in Korea, as of Thursday afternoon.
"The 'Supernova' music video is in line with the upcoming album's slogan - 'Only I can define myself,'" SM said in a statement. "It paints a picture of the members who attempt to depict their authentic selves."
After rolling out "Armageddon," aespa will hold the "2024 aespa LIVE TOUR - SYNK : PARALLEL LINE -'" concert at Seoul's Jamsil Indoor Stadium on June 29-30.
In addition, boy band TREASURE will also join the star-studded lineup, putting out the digital single, "King Kong" on May 28. Its record label YG Entertainment said, Thursday, that the tune will be reminiscent of a movie of the same name, which illuminates a character that takes a risk for love.
"Our members' energy and charisma have been raised to the maximum," YG said.
TREASURE is currently on its second Asia tour titled, "2024 TREASURE RELAY TOUR [REBOOT]."
