The high rate of hunger and poverty is driving a spike in shoplifting in South Africa. According to the National Institute for Crime Prevention and Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro) over 6-thousand shoplifters were arrested across South Africa between 2021 and 27 June 2023. Shoplifting is a real economical concern and occurs under various circumstances, there are professional shoplifters, shoplifting driven by poverty, addiction, kleptomaniacs, and thrill-seekers. Vincent Cruywagen, a Daily Maverick journalist has profiled a single mother with three children from Bishop Lavis in Cape Town about her daily struggle with hunger and poverty. She has resorted to stealing food for her kids in order to survive. Is the terrible economic situation in South Africa, now driving people to shoplifting in order to to put food on the table? To discuss this matter further we're joined virtual by Daily Maverick journalist Vincent Cruywagen and Magda Reynolds Western Cape area manager for Nicro

S.Africans will use any excuse to turn to crime. I was in Namibia for holiday & the ppl there are poor but there is not as much crime as here. I often have young men & women asking me for money " R10 to buy bread" I will tell them come pick up the leaves & sweep my yard or come wash my car & I will give you R150. Why do they seldom/never take me up on my offer. Our problem is drugs, alcohol & laziness in a poverty stricken country.

You're right, African men are spoilt and unskilled. I think the best action is to actually build in the rural areas, you can still farm, barter with cattle and sew your own clothes, and with internet, sell online. But we've been brainwashed into thinking the urban lifestyle is better when most people are living in squalor.

I think you are correct about everything, but expecting people to go to your home with you. That would be dangerous. I wouldn't expect anyone to just trust me on sight because they are hungry. They still have sense.

Aha! Shoplifting = hunger, not murder and bank robberies.

It isn't just shoplifting. I stayed at the Radisson OR Tambo a couple of months ago and when I got home discovered that I had been relieved of some of my make up. Considering each lipstick cost me 37 pounds, that adds up to a tidy sum. I appreciate people are hungry, but lipstick and mascara cannot be eaten and I am not the thief's daddy, husband nor president. I am not responsible for their well being, suffice that I gave custom to a business that employs them. Of course I won't be doing that again.

@@suzygirl1843You probably wouldn't believe this, but maybe coming to the city was their last resort out of poverty because they actually tried to make an 'honest living'.

I agree, even some of us can no longer afford prostitutes. So if we can’t afford them it means they can’t feed their families. All things have become expensive it’s heartbreaking💔😢.

The prostitute issue is a very sensitive one. I believe those women can still be able to do something else other than prostitution , and I am not undermining their situation.

@@KD-us9jm I think since they are used to that profession it’s hard to move away from it. But I do agree with you, they can do it and also do another basic normal job.

Why does a servant of the people earn more than the people that employ him? And do you think if elected as president, the DA leaders will reduce their salaries?

😂😂one tends to only fearmonger about something one considers an actual threat... Look, don't fear the EFF, they represent an outlet for the intense anger and hatred for the continued apartheid in SA. For example the people who engage farm action are actually just ordinary youth at the end of their tether with the lack of transformation. You yourselves are perfecting the most fertile breeding grounds for farm action, nincompoop. You need the EFF to save you from yourselves.

The worse is still to come...we are in the last days before jesus comes. These are only the birth pains. With Jesus , u are protected n guided into the life of jesus christ. Crime is high in SA because we hve refused the gospel n gone 100% into our ancestral demon worshipping . Until we come to Jesus , the worst is to come. More floods n mud slides are coming .......these are hard times ...

Forget about shoplifting. What a shame on you SABC disabling the comment section in the livestream of the Senzo Meyiwa Trial. SABC is showing its roots still entrenched in public disinformation campaign. That criminality administered by that kangaroo court in Pretoria must not continue unchallenged while SABC infringe on the right by the public to express themselves in the comments section 😂 When a judge and the prosecutor collude in protecting alleged criminals who witnessed the killing of Senzo Meyiwa, spend 10 years wasting taxpayer money prosecuting people who have absolutely nothing with the murder , wasting time with cooked , hopeless, irrelevant time wasting testimony. SABC, please stop participating in crime taking place in that north Gauteng kangaroo court wasting time in the Senzo Meyiwa Trial. Please please please open the comment section so that the public will call it as it is. If you prevent the public from using words. What really do you want them to do???? 🙏🙏🙏

I have always said it and will say it again: the problem is not the ANC or the government. The problem is the economic system for the distribution of resources. The capitalist system caters for the 1% global elite. The South African system was inherited from the Anglo-Saxons who were and are still benefiting from it. A socialist system is the way forward for the whole planet. At the moment, the Russian socialist system is the better system but has to be perfected also to extinguish oligarchs. A perfect socialist system works well on a planet where lower level consciousness actions like better than thee attitudes, selfishness, greed and corruption are at a minimal level. Then that's when you find poverty completely eliminated. At the moment, unfortunately, the same Anglo-Saxons still drive or force their policies throughout the planet!
