For more than two decades, The City Club of Cleveland has hosted the annual High School Debate Championship. Every year, the top two area debaters square off in a classic "Lincoln-Douglas" style debate at a Friday forum. This year's debate is between Isaiah Paik of University School and Sebastian Williams of Gilmour Academy. The resolution is: The United States ought to provide a universal basic income.

Looking back at high school, Debate should have really been a core class and not an elective. It teaches you how to critically think, form your own beliefs, develop self confidence, and stand up for yourself. These skills are useful as fuck in real life.

in his illegitimate jobs point he started to talk about child labour but that implies that UBI would extend to all minors and then that means that parents would just be getting double or triple what other people get with UBI, this would also mean that UBI amounts would probably reduce for the higher amount of recipients, which would probably make it not enough for workers to have leverage over poor working conditions.

Asian guy is very well spoken, but on my side, i think the other guy dug himself a hole in that he wasn't able to compromise and picture the testimony the asian guy was trying to convey to the audience. What speakers need to be very aware of is the grounds of the debate. This is to always refer back to freedom and wellbeing on the basis of feasibility so that their proposition prevails and outcompetes the other . The red tie guy sticks to his guns and solely believes UBI is flawless and neglects the hurdles in the way i.e. 3 trillion dollars being pumped into the welfare system and keeping fingers crossed that it will feed back into the system via taxes. Both very good speakers, but had the red tie guy approached it differently i.e. better analogies, economical framework and an attacking approach ( by scrutinising the asian guy on how the targeted welfare programmes are fragmented and each states obliging to their own laws creates a belt of inequality between states. the Asian kid believes in selectivity, all or nothing, humans can only incur one source of deprivation i.e. You can be abused by your partner, but cannot be unemployed or vice versa). You can be defensive in an debate, but at times find the sweet weak spots to burden your opponent. Utmost respect to the speakers, I think it was a draw.

yeah that's the concept of offense and defense, you need both to win but when I judge I always consider defense above offense, meaning if one side did nothing but attack their opponent and never responded to their opponents attacks while their opponent only defended their case but made no attacks against them, I'd vote for the latter cuz at least they uphold what they said.

I think non-domination was a bad VC here. If the idea is that no one should control your actions, then you can't really make an argument that there should be an UVI because there is still an actor (the gov) dolling out the money. You're still dependent on the whim of the actor which, because of the UVI, has control over you.

Rebuttal : There are better, cheaper, and safer alternatives to the problems you brought up. Give people free housing on a six-month probation period where they have to have weekly counseling and apply for jobs. This creates jobs, reduces homelessness, and connects people to resources. This is paid for by the equivalent amount that would have been spent on long-term welfare. Make prostitution legal and taxable (Reno style) to remove pimps. Like, legalized marijuana, this will turn a crime into an economic boon for the state. Also, allow online escort sites (like Indeed but for sex workers) so there is a paper trail of who they were with... to remove Ted Bundys and abuse. Create temporary safe houses for people who are in a domestic abuse situation and have it funded by alumni who were saved through the program.

I quit my high school's debate team, because it turns out I'm not so smart after all. In the last competition, I got beat by a guy who's 17 and heading to the _tenth_ grade. And that's not all: I go to my city's public high school; he goes to the much smaller and less popular charter school that accommodates certain students. I know him because he's my friend's cousin, and it didn't take long to know his character. He is slow; he always needs clarification and accommodations to the instructions you give him. I felt for sure I could beat him in the debate competition, but he actually had--and this really does pain me to say this--greater points to counter mine. They were so deep and logical. After losing to a guy who often "doesn't get it" and will be a seventeen-year-old sophomore in a tiny charter school, I realized I didn't have what it takes for debate team after all. I always thought I was so smart, but it looks like I'm stupid, huh?
@positivefraud3012
@positivefraud3012 Жыл бұрын
I mean if you describe his school environment to be more advantageous and accommodating than yours then you should definitely see that as a plus for you. As it seems for him, he wasn’t able to put much effort into mastering his debate skills and had a higher likelihood of success in debate tourneys because of adequate third party assistance, it would be obvious and sound to say that you are the more competent one. Keep pushing my dude 💪 you’re already well self-aware.
@johnrainsman6650
@johnrainsman6650 Жыл бұрын
@@positivefraud3012 No, his school isn't more advantageous. I meant it's much smaller (at least 10 people graduating and approximately 15-20 students per grade) while my school has way more graders and graduates. And I hear his school is an easier learning environment. As far as I know, they make classes and assignments simpler. Smarter people don't need that school, when they can rise to an academic challenge and be in my town's public high school (that's one reason I can't believe I lost to this guy). I'm surprised his school even has a debate team; that and cross country running is it. My school has way more teams. As for this particular student, I don't know his backstory or methods to gain debate skills. But that's not the point; the point is, he just doesn't grasp information and instructions as quickly as anyone could. He is SLOW. I can totally see him scratching the top of his head with a finger while saying, "I don't get it." I'll admit I don't know what his grades are, but he once told me he had to switch out of his chemistry class to take his own simpler assignments to Special Ed. Yeah, that sounds about right. And that's why I'm horrified I lost to THIS guy in a debate. Debate teams are intellectual challenges for deep thinkers who got the brains to counter different brains. I CAN'T lose to a guy who's in a tiny charter school, slow at grasping in general, switched to Special Ed for chemistry (a class that is so easy, by the way), and is graduating at age TWENTY. That's just...ridiculous! So I gotta ask, does my losing to him in particular make me stupid?
@E.M.Favour
@E.M.Favour Жыл бұрын
I beg to differ, you lost fair and square it doesn’t mean your less smart , it only shows there is still room for you to grow and the thing about debate is, much like the law who has better points goes a long way than who is right or wrong, you just self examine yourself in the most fair way possible, only smart people can be smart enough to admit when they didn’t cut it. I can not convince you enough of your own brain power. It would be nice for you to go up against him again
@notretsechkg
@notretsechkg Жыл бұрын
Preparation prior to the debate levels the playing field. A person who isn't "smart" (i.e. quick witted, thinking "on his feet") can outperform a smart debater simply by preparing more in advance. If you are losing debates, you may not be carding enough evidence, writing enough briefs and especially writing and rehearsing blocks. You should be pre-preparing cross-ex trees. Pre-formulating and practicing arguments, counter-arguments and counter-counter-arguments (blocks) until they flow off your tongue with ease. "Smart" = realizing the amount of time for prep is "infinite" prior to the debate compared to the time allotted during the debate. Better prep prior to the debate reduces the mental overhead required during the debate, thus freeing your mind to focus on immediate tactics and overall debate strategy for the round. Hence, the better prepared you are, the "smarter" you will appear during the debate! Great debaters are always thinking about how to improve their debate performance outside the debate. Whether they are working out at the gym, playing a video game, running a cross-country race or reading a 19th century literary poem, they are focused on using that experience to be a better debater. They eat, sleep and drink debate. It permeates everything they do. They understand that there is always someone out there right now working harder at debate than they are and they do everything in their power to offset that disadvantage. They are never focused on "winning" in and of itself, rather they are concerned with demolishing each and every argument they encounter. They hunger and thirst for another argument to dismantle and crave learning and understanding in order to do just that. They understand the weaknesses in every argument they make better than their opponents. They understand that quitting is losing.

i'm here because i'm writing a character who's in debate club and i wanted to get a feel for how it is... yeah, let's just say this wasn't a good video to click on the see what the average high school debate student is like.

It’s better to speak to someone who does debate, because the match is just a small part of their debating experience.

@@nushnush9065 yeah, that makes more sense. my school doesn't have a debate club tho, and I don't know many people from other schools, so that may be kind of difficult. I guess I could find some random person online

I actually felt quite strongly that pro had this one. I think his rebuttals of his opponent's case were compelling, logical, and evidence based while the con side lacked the same quality of rebuttal. I was surprised to find out that con had won. If anyone understands that decision better than I do I would love an explanation lol
