Very helpful! In literature, did your children read books from the typical recommended reading lists for each grade? Books such as The Great Gatsby, Animal Farm, etc. Or did they read any book they were interested in?
@TheBealles
@TheBealles 2 жыл бұрын
I usually used reading lists as a base for simplicity sake, but made changes as I saw fit (because to me, books like The Cat of Bubastes & Up From Slavery are under-appreciated). Of course, additional reading was always welcomed and encouraged.

Love this video! I know this is an older video but there is a newer math curriculum out called Denison Math. My daughter really struggles with math. This program was written for those struggling students in mind. There are actually two choices for every course. He has a standard version (which is what we are using) and the success version of Alg 1, Geometry, and Alg 2 (it has just been added). The success version is for those with learning disabilities. My math hating daughter has been able to do 2 lessons per day for an entire week. She doesn't dread math anymore. I watch the math videos with her and the teacher does a great job of breaking it down into bite sized chunks. I just thought I would add this in case someone has a child like mine who just can't seem to understand math.

We are just now planning to home school. We have one child that is entering 9th this upcoming year but she has been in all advanced classes. We are in Texas and the rules/guidelines don't seem to be too restrictive but I wondered from your perspective, could we still have her graduate early with doing CLEP tests? We have younger ones as well but im so scared that I'm going to mess it up for her! But public schools have become way too far off course from our morals and what we want to have our children learn. We wanted to try traveling with them, RV style lol, and study and learn in real time! Discussing or learning about the Grand Canyon? Let's go! Sort of approach if that makes sense! Suggestions??? Thanks in advance!!

Personally, I encouraged my children to pursue their interests and take classes that would allow them entrance into the NC state college system (because that’s where we live). If you have a 9th grader, my first suggestion is that you start with their long term goals. Are they going to college? Do they know what they want to do as a profession? If not, do they have any serious interests to pursue in order to find the right career/life’s passion? Is there a particular college they would be interested in attending? You start with these questions because if they intend to go to college or pursue something specific, now is the time to focus their curriculum on their goals. Each college has specific requirements for entrance. Find what their possible colleges are requiring for entrance and do that, trying to allow them as many classes as possible that are in line with their interests. Also, CLEP is not for high school credit. It’s for college credit, and most colleges only allow a student to have a certain portion of their credits from CLEP. I would not focus on CLEP. If you have a child who is in the 90th percentile on all their tests and they feel well-prepared in a subject, then CLEP could be an option, but not everyone is a good test-taker. I only had one child use CLEP exams, and that was really just to speed up his college graduation. Besides, good test scores don’t really mean that one has had a quality education. Focus on preparing them for the next thing, but tests. That’s what I recommend.

@@TheBealles thank you! And yes my soon to be 9th grader is our college bound child for sure and has been a "brainiac" since she could talk 🤣 the others that are younger... one is leaning military and the other is 7 and obviously has no clue yet! But thank you so much for the advice!!! I keep rewatching your videos and making notes!

I would suggest you look into dual enrollment. Check with your local college, or community college for requirements. In my state, SC, my daughter took classes while still attending homeschool high school. The grades she received from the courses allowed her GPA to be raised, since they are higher levels of learning. We paid $75 per class. A community college 45 min from us allows high schoolers take classes for free. You have to live in that county to get the free classes. So, dual enrollment is one way your high schooler can graduate early. You may want to check with your local government, and see if they allow you to claim high school credit for earlier grades. My state allows us to take high school level classes in 7th grade.

So, did you make a course stretch out over 180 days or let them work ahead and once the content is completed give them a full credit and they move on to the next years work? Hope that makes sense.
@TheBealles
@TheBealles 4 жыл бұрын
Valerie Head In NC, they are required 180 days in attendance, which we must document. However, they can work on weekends and in the summer.

Did you use Rod and Staff by grade level? I have noticed Heart of Dakota recommends using it 1-2 years behind.
@TheBealles
@TheBealles Жыл бұрын
On grade level. It seems simplistic, but it’s deceptively easier. It teaches challenging concepts in a minimal format. Certainly it was sufficient to prepare my children for college at 16.

Do you recommend taking traditional homeschool curriculum and CLEPing or just taking community college courses instead??
@TheBealles
@TheBealles 4 жыл бұрын
I think, if your goal is a college degree, then you should CLEP as much as the college allows to save time and money. However, I am not a fan of the programs where you stay home and study for months for the purpose of passing multiple CLEP exams and avoiding college. It can take much longer and be more frustrating and expensive than just taking the classes and passing them. The goal is to get college done as easily, quickly, and inexpensively as possible. You will need to gauge your child to see how this would work best for them. Some find CLEP exams to be a breeze. Others are not the best test takers, but function well in a classroom setting. We want out children to feel confident in their college experience, so we have to tailor it for each one. That is why Brian had a Bachelor's in three years, but Briana is taking three years to complete her associate's degree. He prefers to get in and get done. She feels more comfortable taking her time. We want to help them to meet their goals without wasting time or money unnecessarily.

I am pulling my soon to 11th grader out of school to homeschool this year. He hasn't done well in English and Is behind. He doesn't plan to go to a 4 year college, he is planning to go to more of a tech school. I'm having a hard time knowing what I should choose for him, I don't want to get him something that will be over his head
@TheBealles

So, let me ask you a few questions. What is your goal for him? Grammar? Writing? Are you opposed to a book that is not on-level (for another grade)? Why don't you email me at info@thefundamentalhome.com and I will see if I can't help you find something that will work for you both.

Did you use a separate writing curriculim or was composition instruction sufficient in Rod and Staff?
@TheBealles
@TheBealles Жыл бұрын
I think Rod & Staff is sufficient for 9th & 10th. However, I will admit that, since we graduate at 16, I don’t go too heavy on composition since I know that they will be heavy on writing in their college courses. They were, I believe, prepared for their college work. If you want more practice, I recommend WriteShop.
