@L'Univers de Pi Mine works fine on my Panasonic G9 I set mine to TTL and Auto zoom and remember it only works till 105mm. So if you have a bigger lens then it won't move. Lastly if you pull out the on board diffuser the flash will not move. That's all I got very much a newbie to the whole flash thing.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't had that problem with this flash, but I did hear from other people that there were some incpompatibilies with that model of flash and the G9. You can try using the manual zoom. I often use wide angle lenses that are wider than the flash is meant for. But with fill flash outdoors, it's hard to tell.

Your videos are so much better than trying to RTFM. After watching the pertinent video I understand what I was seeking to learn. Cameras are computers with a lens attached. Trying to make the camera do what I want can be trying. Watching your videos make me believe I am in control. Sometimes I’m not not sure. The G9 is a super hybrid body. Sometimes I think it is smarter than me. I’m afraid the body b Does too. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret).

I am glad to see you have returned. This was another informative video, thanks! I don't use flash but I keep thinking I should learn it. This was helpful. By the way, in the past you explained iDynamic and other such Lumix mysteries. One day could you explain Digital Zoom for stills? I never use this as I believe I will get a poor quality image. However, I wonder if it is as bad? If I am out with a prime lens and want to zoom, maybe digital zoom would be an option? I should test it I suppose, but I was thinking it could be a good subject for your videos - just an idea :-). All the best with the channel, I am looking forward to your next video.

Hi Dave, I got the X1 Trigger, but in hindsight I should have probably got the X-Pro Trigger instead. It's supposed to be easier to use. I wasn't aware it was available at the time of my purchase. But it was too much hassle to return, (serves me right for shopping online) and I don't use flash very much so I'm sucking it up. But I haven't tested the X-Pro Trigger so make sure you do some research - just in case.

Marlene, love your very helpful videos. A question. I’m looking for a flash for my G9. Godox V860II vs Godox TT685. They seem identical in specs with the exception of the battery. The V860II has rechargeable battery and is much more expensive. The TT685 uses AA batteries. What is the difference in your opinion other than the batteries? Is it worth to pay $70 extra for the V869II? Thanks.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 жыл бұрын
I have to say, I love, love the rechargeable battery on the V860II. Having said that, you can get AA batteries everywhere, so it's handy when travelling or when you're not near a power supply. If you think you'll spend $70 or more on AA batteries, get the rechargeable 860 model. I haven't looked at the 685, but if you say it's identical, then I'll believe you. Double check the Godox website for complete information. I'm no expert on this flash and the 860 is the only Godox I've ever used. But ya, the rechargeable battery is great and it lasts a long time.

@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Carlota, First question, is it a transmitter specific for that Sony camera? I don't have a Sony handy to check but I expect you'll find out how to set up HSS if you look it up in the camera owner's manual. Most camera manuals come as pdf and you can easily search them. I just did a search myself and found it. So I'm sure you can do the same. And if you can't get it to work, Jared Polin is using that camera, so you could ask him for help if you can't find your answer in the pdf owner's manual. Hope that helps.

@ImageMaven

Yes, it works fine indoors too. Do some tests with your shutter speed and maybe try to hit 1/60 or 1/50second so that you get some ambient light in there too. Test everything out before you do a big shoot. The flash has a built in diffuser but you can also purchase 3rd party attachments or make your own. I have a video about flash basics here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/astgfZuf2a7HlHU.html Might be worth a look.

It's hard for me to answer as I don't have the exact same configuration as you. Just make sure that the hotshoe connections are clean and that the flash is seated snugly in there. I did notice that this flash has a very tight fit on my own hotshoe and if it wasn't seated properly it didn't connect.

In my experience the Godox flash does not recycle fast enough. Maybe on 1/128 power or stroboscopic mode (but that would put the shots in one frame) this would be possible. I'm going to test it out some more when the weather gets warmer -- in 5 months or so ;) If you figure it out, let me know! Cheers.

Great video, Marlene. Since you mentioned both Luminar 4 and Lightroom in the video, I'm wondering which you like best. Could you share some thoughts regarding pros and cons of both systems? Hi Smalltown Bloom, LR and Luminar are both great pieces of software and I use them both a lot, but I use LR more. LR is a subscription-based and Luminar in a one-off price (but having said that there are yearly upgrades that you can buy). Luminar has a lot of Ai technology and I LOVE that aspect of it. One slider can fix a photo in mere seconds. I love the "looks" they have and the interface is logical and simple to use. Very little experience is needed to use Luminar. I have been using LR (and Photoshop) for years and years, so it's hard to give Adobe up. I use LR for the cataloguing of my photos and videos. Both can edit raw files really well. Luminar is more of an artists editing tool. I get really creative when I'm using Luminar. LR is my workhorse software. I'm used to it so I have a fast workflow. Luminar can also act as a plugin for LR so you can use both at the same time. What I suggest is that you download a trial version of Luminar. Link in the video description. Use my coupon code if you decide to buy it. Also in the video description, and save a few bucks. They also have lots of sales on Luminar. And then you can also get a 30-day trial of LR + Photoshop together. Another Adobe option is Photoshop Elements, which is a one-off price. The advantage of using Elements is that you have similar options as Photoshop in terms of image composites, selections etc. But it's a steep learning curve. Both apps have free tutorial videos on their websites. So look to those to get you up to speed. In the end it's personal preference, budget, and ease of use for you. Thanks for stopping by. p.s. I see that Luminar can work with Apple Photos as a Plug in as well.

I used to only use Manual Flash when I was indoors. I had a little portable portrait set up. Off camera flash with a small umbrella. I did corporate work and occasionally needed to shoot a headshot in someone's workplace - usually their office. I didn't use HSS. I used the standard Sync Speed. The flash will choose the focal length if you have the Zoom set to AUTO. But it only goes down to 12mm for that particular model. You can see whether the focal length Zoom is for M4/3 or FF: On the flash, press and hold the button on the left side of the top row and it will show you a chart with all the info. Also to change from Manual Zoom to Auto Zoom, press that same button and then roll the main dial and it should change the zoom amount, or you can also choose Auto Zoom. Hope that helps. This info would make a good video! Cheers!

That is one of the biggest challenges of all. Large group and small flash. And hopefully your group is less than 8 people if using a small flash, because it's not the kind of lighting needed for big groups. It's not very flattering even for a few people. I would bring in extra lighting meant for groups, like large strobes with umbrellas to distribute the light evenly as possible. Shoot in raw so that you can fix any white balance issues in editing. Good luck!

@@ImageMaven Hi Marlene, Just to give you an update: it worked out well. It was a group of around 50 people and yes, by searching for help online, I already knew this was going to be a challenge. Luckily, I had some time at the location to set up and try out some settings. I had a colour filter put on the flash to match the ambient light, I then put my G9 on iso 800 and used a shutterspeed of 30 so that my camera would pick up a lot of ambient light too (not just the harsh flash light). I then stood on a ladder and bounced the flash against the (white) ceiling. Now that I discovered the miracles of using flash ;-) I decided to also buy the Godox 350. This flash is a bit smaller/more compact and easier to bring with me if I don't need to light a huge group of people. Also, the 350 can be combined with the 860. Lots of exciting stuff to learn with these flashes!

Good videos Marlene! As a G9 expert, maybe can you tell me if you have the following problem as I with jpegs - I've had the G9 for a few months, came from Sony. When I review jpg in the VF, its nothing as sharp as the live preview (constant preview ON, drive mode with live view enabled). I can't figure it out. I expect the recorded image to be identical to the one shown in the VF, since (presumbaly) tha's the sensor output that will get written to the memory card. I contacted Panasonic, Second issue is jpg image quality in general. Even in strong end of day light, less exposed areas (but not in strong shadows) look like a mushy mess in some cases literally falls apart like a vga video still from the 90s (pana 12-60). Is this why you hear that pana overprocesses jpegs or is this just an issue with either the sensor or the sensor+pana lens combo? Amazingly, a canon new fd 50 does not seem (i could be wrong, have not tested both lenses on the exact same scene) to suffer from the same jpeg degradation , which leads me tp imagine that the excessice processing happens based on the lens type. I got a dear John answer from Panasonic rec to turn on constant preview... maybe you have some experience with these 2 issues? ------------------------------------- I have constant preview on but I still have difficulty reviewing image quality in viewfinder. I don't know if it's just the image quality, the glass or the evf. 30 years of picture taking enthusiast/semi-pro... i'm new to lumix, but take about 10,000 shots a year. Happy with the camera except for these worries. I am shooting jpeg (firmware 1,2 installed) for now. I have been using the Lumix 12-60 (not the leica), 45-150 and 100-300 ii lenses mainly, about 2000 shots. The results are similar with the 3 lenses. At the highest file size and resolution in jpg, it seems that as soon as the subject or part of it isn't directly bathed in light, even in broad daylight, things looks mushy and darker patches especially are very messy, and this isn't at 300%, just at 100-125%. This happens at low iso 200-800 (max), in daylight, non backlit scenes. Plenty of light. Shutter speeds 400 and higher, ibis on, so I'm surprised at how some subjects just fall apart. I can't imagine the glass is the problem on 3 lenses ... see the attached pictures 1- lumix 12-60) the building shot late afternoon especially - not really a challenging scene in my opinion. Faces are often problematic, complexions fall apart. The girl shot 2 lumix 12-60) you can see the contours of the lips teeth and freckles patches extremely soft and blotchy, and this is one of the better ones. Is this what lumix noise reduction produces esp. with lumix lenses attached to the camera? Also It doesn't seem to be noticeable degradation on manual vintage lenses (see 3 and 4 - vintage 135mm) soccer girls attached, and not 100% in focus due manual but no deterioration when zoomed in), so seems to be a G9-lumix lens combo thing. What does this tell us?

Hmm you think mayb it’s the lens?
@soneeeee4440
@soneeeee4440 4 жыл бұрын
@@A1Bokeh I have considered all sorts of causes but the reason i ask is I'm wondering if anyone else has these issues, sounds like your answer is NO or that you haven't noticed. they are aren't easy to quantify there are many many variables and potential subjective errors . i guess i can test it more scientifically - but i have used the 12-60 and 45-150 quite a bit with similar jpg results, they're not leica lenses but they were designed by pana for lumix and get good reviews. I think my manual fd lens didnt muddle and smear things as badly, but it was a completely different scene. This leads me to believe that the G9 goes to town when knows it has a lumix lens attached and maybe applies heavy handed jpg processing that it doesn't to non native lenses - a total guess. This is not verified, i would have to do a side by side and compare with same setting on same subject etc, i have trouble believing that the resolving power of lumix lenses can be the issue.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 4 жыл бұрын
I always compare image quality in Photoshop and don't rely on the viewfinders for that. As for the lenses, I definitely get better sharpness of images when I'm using my fixed 15mm over my higher end Lumix zoom lenses. And that could be what you're noticing. But all lenses are different. In the final analysis, if I go to print or web, no one is pixel peeping that deep. And no one sees what we photographers see -- unless it's your mission to look at all prints from 3 inches away. We are more critical than the average viewer. People are looking at your photos from an artistic point of view. Composition and lighting have much more affect on us than what we see on the pixel level.
@soneeeee4440
@soneeeee4440 4 жыл бұрын
@@ImageMaven Thanks for your reply Marlene. I bought the G9 for the viewfinder major criteria. The viewfinder issue amounts to being worried I cant confirm the shot quality because what I'm seeing on playback looks a bit different than what I saw in the viewfinder before the shot. I'm trying to understand why, and that's not zoomed in, just the normal view. The more I look the VF, there seems to be some kind of oversharpening going on in the live view that doesn't show up in the recorded image. I have to figure out if i did something in the VF settings - don't remember if sharpness can be adjusted, but that would certainly explain it. As far as jpg image quality on the PC, i'm not pixel peeping. but also trying to fiigure out why some jpgs seem to fall apart in good lighting, when i never noticed on a sony a6xxx. i'm also shooting raw so now at least I can see if its panasonic's jpg processor that's making a mess in some cases. Also I will play around with some primes. I took some pics indoor gym with a canon new fd 50 1.4 at 2.0 i think and I did not see any ugly smudging in jpgs even in fairly challenging light. I'll report my findings once I figure this out. I am playing aroung with RAW, which i have never done, and don't really want to do the extra work. cheers

Thanks for the tutorial Marlene. Really useful. One question: in Slave mode, the HSS indicator disappears. So does that mean you can't use HSS in Slave mode? Also, I'm using a Sony A7R iv and I can't get the HSS mode to work on top of the camera. At speeds of 1/160 or faster, I get the half-dark frame. Is there an issue with the Sonys that you know of?
@ImageMaven

The black bar is because you have a faster shutter speed than the native camera sync. So only part of the frame is exposed. Maybe there is a setting on your camera that you need to set before using HSS. Sorry I don't have a Sony to work with so you will have to dig into the camera manual.
