Beautiful high tunnel. Hope you are doing well with your pregnancy in this heat. I’m 21 weeks pregnant and this Midwest humidity has me exhausted when I’m working in the garden. But today I harvested my first peppers and potatoes so it motivated me to keep moving and not give up! Blessings! ❤

Hey girl you impress me every time you do a tour of your hoop house. Your knowledge and learning experience has superseded since you took over this farm. You have thrown yourself into this homestead 200% and it shows. Congratulations on the farm. You are 1 special lady. Take care of yourself and that little guy your carrying around in your belly. You look amazing! Love you and best wishes to a healthy, happy baby boy, and of course a beautiful 2024 abundance of food stored away in your pantry and for your enjoyment. Please take care of yourself.

We grow determinates in a high tunnel too and we also prune them. We take off the "sun leaves" and leave on the suckers and productive parts which have plenty of foliage to collect sun and shade the fruit.

That surprises me that you had so much trouble with the bumblebee tomatoes. We grow them all the time and they are a favourite of ours. The taste is amazing, and they have had no trouble with pests or disease whatsoever. We let them ramble, we climb them on trellises, we never prune any of our tomatoes, and still have no problems. We grow outside in South Western Ontario, Canada. As for paste tomatoes, the cheap common seed (available in most department and dollar stores, which we aren't against buying, but in this case there are better choices) that only offer the smaller paste romaine tomato, get disease( but are extremely prolific), but the larger San Marzano which is wonderful, gets very little disease, as does the Ox Heart (although it doesn't produce as much as other varieties). I'm wondering if it is the climate and location difference. We do get very hot here and vary between wet and dry, and really only have problems if it is too far in one direction or the other. Wet is definitely the worst for tomatoes though.

Thanks for sharing Jill. I love your garden. It’s good to know the high producers you grow in comparison to heirlooms. I do see your point of the diseases in comparison to the hybrid. We do what’s best for us in our region and what our family will eat. Many blessings to you and your family. Also I love your beet powder video. Will try that this year.

I ordered that same high tunnel kit when I saw Jess and Mya build that one, and I can say - I’m so glad we did! We got the low side (3.5 ft) version because of the high winds here in Oklahoma. We only have 12” high beds and use rainwater to water & it has been one of the big joys of my life!!! I’ve also found that my Speckled Roman chunky paste style tomato really doesn’t like to be pruned. Hardly got anything off of them last year, but then again last year was terrible here in OK because it went from cloudy and rainy to hot and blooms won’t set super fast. Good info on the paste tomatoes!!!

I'm 72 and I've tried to do a little bit of gardening. I had eight children in 10 years and didn't have much time for anything else. I decided I wanted Beauty along with my vegetables so I put flowers in my first garden. I've heard horror stories about the hornworm etc. but I had none and didn't know what they look like. Many years later I put a tomato plant in with my flower garden. Still no pest, then later I planted a tomato alone and got a huge hornworm it killed my tomato plant. I couldn't figure out where the heck that hornworm came from because I lived in the forest then. Then I remembered I had flowers around my tomato plants before so the next time I planted Tomatoes I planted a zinnia next to it. Back to not having any more pests.😁 My friends and I grew a garden together. I had some pitiful looking zinnias put them between all of her tomato plants and she had no hornworms or bugs of any kind to eat the tomatoes. The next year I did not feel that good to participate my friends put marigolds next to them. The marigolds got ate up and some of the tomatoes too . I know the zinnias did the trick.😊

This single lady grows 8 Katrinas because all my family and friends want me to make freezer bread and butter pickles for them. Sad to hear your itachis were infested because I also love those. So glad we usually don't get infested here. Favorite and only paste tomato for me is the indeterminate, but shorter, Pozzano from Johnny's, prolific and pest free. Oh my, you just now said you have those, too.

Gotta disagree with ya, heirlooms taste way better than hybrid. Plus they keep producing till frost. Nothing but heirlooms for us, there is a reason why heirlooms have been around for hundreds of years.

Yeah interesting that she has had so much trouble with pests. I grew so many heirlooms last year and had zero pest problems for tomatoes. I’m still trying to eat last year’s! Companion planted basil and marigolds with them and no problems at all.
