The ball only starts a new arc if the old one went out. That´s because the arc / the plasma is the path of lowest resistance for the electricity. If it´s not burning anymore, the path of lowest resistance are the two small air gaps between the ball and the two electrodes. The ball then starts a new arc which goes upwards because of the heat until it breaks off due to the bigger distance of the electrodes. Also this setup doesn´t have potential to ground. The only way I could get an electric shock would be to touch both electrodes at the same time while the arc is not burning. The ball itself is at ground potential, so touching the ball wouldn´t be dangerous at all. It´s just to reduce the gab between the electrodes for a short time. My Hand never leaves the main switch while this is running automatically to be able to shut everything down instantly in case something happens. (no Fake, no Magic, just science. Enjoy :)

Imagine adding this to a bigger pendulum, like the clock type ones at museums. Use the arc to drive a motor to rotate the rods, to keep it oriented right

@bl2yan72 ай бұрын
This is not entirely true. Electricity does not "take the path of least resistance". It will take all paths. The reason the arc does not start again as the ball passes is because when an arc is already formed the voltage potential between the two conductors is too small to jump the air gap and draw another arc, the circuit is operating in a 'short' circuit where the current is near max and the voltage is low. For video 2.0 install a PT between these two conductors to observe voltage drop during an arc condition
@herrlito-hv2 ай бұрын
@@bl2yan7 you're right I didn't want to make it more complicated. An arc is not a 100% short circuit. If the gap would be wayy smaller the arc would start again even if one is still burning. Because of the inductive ballast the volte drops until the maximum current flows.

High voltage is made with High Voltage generators, which use transformers and capacitor, which are conected to timers (or sometimes simpler spark gaps) turning the circuit on and off at the calculated resonant frequency, allowing the build up of the high voltage, but in turn reducing the current. Adding a simple resistor to the "High Voltage" will allow almost no current and bring the voltage back to a very low level. So power (Voltage*Current) actually remains the same, you are not using sny higher power than whats normally provided by an outlet in your home

This is actually a really cool principle because electricity chooses the path of least resistance so once the arc starts happening it ends up going up because hot air rises and it's actually becoming less resistant to transfer the electricity which is why it makes the arc super large If I'm correct this is one of the many things known as a Jacob's ladder
