In this video I will show you exactly what food will sustain me during a 340 mile thru-hike of the Sheltowee Trace in Kentucky and Tennessee. This thru-hike will also be an unsupported FKT, which stands for fastest known time, which is basically a speed record on a trail. Click the link below to follow my progress during October 24-31, 2021.

• THE FINALE! Sheltowee ...
On this Unsupported FKT I used my Zpacks Duplex and Nemo Switchback pad with a UGQ quilt all carried with a Lite AF Curve 40L backpack. This sleep system is a bit lighter and smaller than my Dream Hammock Raven, Hammock Gear DCF tarp and Nemo Tensor pad. For shoes I wore the Altra Olympus 4.0’s with Darn Tough and Injinji socks and Dirty Girl Gators. My trekking poles were Fizan Compact 3 aluminum poles.
For navigation and verification I used Gaia on my iphone 8, carried my Garmin Inreach mini and wore a Corus Apex watch.

I did a backpacking caribou hunting trip last September to the Alaskan tundra with about 2 pounds of food per day. I researched and studied and dehydrated most of my own meals and had it really dialed in and found that I had more food than I needed. It was grueling, but probably not quite as hard as your trip.

Sounds like an amazing trip! It’s amazing how many calories your body can burn during something like that. We have a commercial freeze dryer now, so making my own food is much easier now. Freeze dried meals are outrageously expensive, thanks for the comment.

I’m a wrapper freak and always remove them prior so I’m not carrying a big bag of trash around. For example I take the Stingers and place them all unwrapped in a single sandwich bag knowing I had 2 per day. Says time not having to unwrap and toss in a trash ziplock. I eat out of the same packet for my dinners as well by rinsing them out. Losing all those large meal packs may save some weight/space. Wishing all goes Well! Planning a 45 mile day myself so this is motivating.

Not sure what else you could have had to be prepared. Sounds like a great list! Giving me some ideas for some future multi day stuff I plan on doing! Did you have different flavors for your dinners and snacks to reduce flavor fatigue or stick to your favorites?
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I had three different peak refuel dinners that I mixed up throughout the week. And different flavors of honey stinger waffles and muir energy gels. I always think that I’m taking things that I will enjoy eating but once you get on the trail sometimes things change and this time for me it was the coconut and macadamia nut mixture and the nut butters, they were really hard for me to eat when I wasn’t feeling well.

Congratulations Jason! I enjoyed all of the parts to make your FKT and was amazed at your perseverance, strength, and faith. What an accomplishment! I also have stomach issues on fastpacking trips and was wondering if the two types of broth packets helped you?
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jamie! Well, I ended up not even trying them out and I can't remember for the life of me why I didn't! I ended up just taking a few ginger tablets, chewing some ginger gum and a few Tums tablets. The broth packets could have made a big difference...dumb move on my part!

Hi Bill, anything that I couldn't find at my local Kroger or Wallmart I picked up at Wholefoods, Trader Joes and Roadrunner Sports, which is just a running store that carries energy gels, bars, electorlytes and things like that. REI also carries a decent supply as well. Hope that helps.

Hello Jason, What about honey packets? Light weight and easy to digest and has a good amount of calories.
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 2 жыл бұрын
Honey packets would have been a great addition, I have used honey stinger gels in the past and I really like the way they taste but they’re only about 100 cal per ounce so it’s kind of heavy compared to other high calorie foods but the easy digestion part of it definitely makes it worth it.
