My first commtest submission as a physics student!! The water has an insane amount of kinetic (moving) energy as it reaches the blob. As it hits the inflated side of the blob, it transfers its kinetic energy into potential energy. This potential energy travels across the blob from the inflated to the deflated side, and the object on the deflated side is propelled upward with equal energy to the bag of water as it fell, quickly turning back into kinetic energy. Now, this is only in an ideal world. Due to the laws of thermodynamics, energy is lost during the transfer to friction, sound, etc. Therefore, the ideal length of the blob is probably even shorter than the one used for the boat, I would say roughly twice the width of the bag of water. If you look at the “slowie” at the end of the video, you can see the bit of inflated blob between the water and the boat. In that distance between the falling water and the object, a small amount of energy is being lost. That being said, if the object is too close, or the blob too short (less than half the water bag’s width), then the water bag will either hit the object or the blob will not have enough space inside to re-inflate the other half of it, immediately compromising the spring force of the blob that makes watermelons fly to outer space. Hope that sounds smart enough :)

I happen to go to the camp where the blob was invented, so here’s a little story about it’s creation! The camp’s founder, Tex Robertson, needed a temporary roof for the archery shack, but didn’t have much of a budget, so he bought a tarp container from the government’s war surplus. I’m not sure, but I think it used to store gasoline. Anyways, to move the blob over to the archery shack, he pumped it up with air so he could pull it. While he was pulling it, his friend (I forgot his name, but I think it was Patrick) jumped on it and found the bouncing it did was pretty fun! They started experimenting with the blob, and found that it worked best on a lake, so they put it on the lake and made a little diving platform to jump onto it, and later put a “sock” over the black rubber blob, since it got very hot in summer. Some changes have been made over the years, but it’s remained about the same since it’s beginning.

So the blob works on something called impeadance matching. In this case it has to do with how effectively the mechanical shock of the water bucket can be transfered to the air inside the blob. Then the compression wave of the air has to match up with the fabric on the other side to launch the items. The interface from impact to air to launch is an impeadance matching problem. The best way to find out the proper impeadance matched air fill is 3d modeling. This modeling is like what Mark Rober did for the trampoline.

Question for the physics masters. What is the impact of changing the medium in the blob? I assume there is an ideal fill amount based on displacement expected. But assuming same volume in blob, is water or air better? (Assuming fabric strength was not a concern)
@shadowraven137
@shadowraven137 2 жыл бұрын
@@joeb1kenobi600 changing the medium would make a massive difference. I am being too lazy to calculate but the resultant impact would be determined by the impact force + weight of the medium + (a whole bunch of other things). Best mediums would be lightweight and have low viscosity so the force gets transferred across quickly and efficiently to the empty area/weighed down side. aka: in this case air is better then water. Think of it as a balloon filled with air/water/honey, squeeze it and release. fastest to be squeezed/return to normal balloon is best medium to use in the blob. (hope that kinda makes sense, PS: ideal amount would vary on medium+dimensions of blob)

That boat flip was insane! The bag acts as a see-saw, a weight pushes one side down forcing the other side up. The main difference is the air. The smaller bag should send items higher as there's less space for the forced air to travel to making it more efficient, though there's more of a risk of it popping. Using the principle of conservation of energy you can roughly predict how high the object will go, though you can't predict how cool it will look in slo-mo! Also, would it be ridiculous to play noughts and crossed with the blob, basketball or javelin style?

The smaller blob can hold less air in it than the big blob. However, the size of the water bag is the same. What this means is that, proportionally, the small blob can move more air over to the other side of the blob quicker and harder. This also means that the water bag cannot push out all of the air underneath it without fully inflating the other end. This gives the smaller blob a much more forceful launch; however, it also causes the small blob to burst pretty much every time. As for the Big Blob, you can see in the slo-mos (2:14, 4:40 and 12:42) that the water compresses the blob, then the air has to travel across the length, which allows energy to dissipate before it reaches the projectile. The larger volume also allows for the air to adjust and compress to the sudden 1,000 kg of force. Overall, this happens in a fraction of a second and does not dissipate a lot of energy, but the compressibility of air allows it to absorb the impact like a spring. This heats up the air, which is a loss of energy. Again, this loss in energy is very small, which is why the Big Blob still performs spectacularly. Edit: TL:DR More air can absorb more energy, so smol blob is better. The air absorbs a small amount of energy, so the difference is small.
@kydkaos55
@kydkaos55 2 жыл бұрын
I'm also going to add that the larger the surface area of the projectile in contact with the blob then the harder the push.

Also, the size of the projectile matters. If it is too close to the point of impact, you don't get the full force. So certain objects can get more force out of the larger blob just because their size makes them too close to the point of impact. Basically, the small blob works better for smaller objects and puts out more overall force, while the larger one launches larger objects more easily and efficiently.

Mechanical aerospace engineer here. What is happening is an impulse. Which is a transfer of power/energy in a short amount of time. You are taking the momentum and force of the water and transferring it as fast as possible into the object you are launching. The size of the blob ONLY matters in the direction of the energy transfer. Therefore if energy is only in the X axis, the Y and Z axis don't matter. It can be simplified like a seesaw but where the fulcrum. The longer the seesaw the greater the force transferred. If 1000kg impacts due to gravity that's about 10,000 N. Multiply this by 10 meters to get 100,000 N*m torque. Then the object being launched you divide by that length from fulcrum, say 1 meter, and divide the mass, say 100kg. And that object is being launched at 1000 m/s^2 aka 100 Gs

The mechanics of the boys *"shorter vs. longer blob being more powerful?"* question: In a nutshell the shorter blob has the most potential to transfer the energy best, since air can be compressed; the less air available to compressed the less potential for energy transfer loss. The sooner you can compress that air to a point it starts resisting compression the better. The vinyl itself also has a bit of stretch, so the more surface area you have stretching (thus alleviating pressurization) the less bouncing energy you'll transfer. The only reason to use the larger blob is to have less chance of it popping, because you'll get a more gradual transfer of the heavy water to the heavy boat, giving the blob a little more time to stretch and transfer that energy. Giving it time to stretch is comparable to our skeletal muscles, if you try and do the splits by dropping to the floor you're going to tear something, however if you stretch for a few days you'll do it no problem. It's just like that only on a timescale of nano-seconds.

To answer your question about bigger or smaller working better; smaller works better. Air has a particular amount of compression per kilogram of weight applied. That compression absorbs some of that energy. As you increase the air volume, more energy is absorbed. In exact same environmental conditions the larger blob will absorb more energy due to air compression. You could actually measure how much energy dropping the same weight, from the same height, on the same object; just use different blobs inflated to same PSI. Use the height difference between the two and you can calculate how much more energy the large air volume of the big blob absorbs.

Blobs have sweet spots at both ends as far as incoming and outgoing mass placement for determining angle of launch. The length and pressure of the blob are going to determine the energy transfered through the pressure wave to the projectile changing it's distance along that launch trajectory. There will be an optimal solution where the graphed curves intersect between pressure disapation over distance and wave reflection impulse spike. Good luck.

The way the blob works: the water landing on the blob decreases the volume on the back of the blob. Since volume and pressure have an inverse relationship, the air pressure on the back of the blob increases and moves the air to the front. The movement to the front decreases pressure and (inverse relationship) increases volume, bouncing whatever is on it. Thank you 10th grade chemistry. P.S. I got a B on my final so there is a 20% chance I'm wrong

Blob size: It's more about how much air is in the Blob. The ideal amount of air, would give you an internal Blob pressure during the impact, that is just below the popping pressure. Also, the farther the items on the Blob have to move while still in contact with the Blob, the longer the acceleration time will be. Ideally, the items should be place on the Blob while partially deflated, and then the Blob aired up to the point that the items are just barely lifted by the blob. You can always ask the company that makes the Blobs, to double the fabric thickness. :D
