A few years ago, I was visiting London and decided to pay my respects to an old friend who'd passed away some 10 years earlier. We took the tube to Brompton Cemetery, a "Royal Parks" cemetery and walked a few quick blocks. It was a lot like what you show --a lot of overgrowth, tumbled headstones, instances of beauty and peace. Lots of military heroes, poets, writers, artists, wives, and children. The sculptures were beautiful, the epitaphs often hauting. Unfortunately, I had no idea where my friend was buried, but could only go on instinct. So I kept walking toward the back, hoping to find an area where there might more recent graves. Amazingly, I just went on a hunch and kept going until finally... amazingly, I found him. All he had was a simple wooden cross. But other friends over the years had stopped by, and hung trinkets and photos of him on the cross. I was awfully glad I went. It was memorable, and touching.

I have grown up not far from this cemetery and no matter how many times I visit I get the same feelings. Truly a beautiful and historical place.

I visited a tiny churchyard in western London. There I saw tombstones of children who had died in the "Great Fire of London" in 1666, and others from the year 1140. Nearly a thousand years ago.

I thought the USA had old & beautiful cemeteries but this one takes the prize. What a beautiful, beautiful cemetery. I can't get over the incredible artwork & care initially given to each stone along with an extensive detailed story about that person. What a beautiful tribute that the families gave to their loved ones. It's so disrespectful that cemeteries this beautiful could be left to nature & vandals.

cemetery owners should be required to fund a trust for perpetual care - a trust which they don't control so they cannot loot it. This is a common story for private cemeteries and mausoleums over the years. They are "for profit" institutions. For anyone not familiar with a mausoleum, exposed caskets are not normal, they are usually sealed behind a stone plate. A series of unseen channels and vents allow drainage of any liquid byproducts of disintegration or putrification process while keeping the air fresh.

Hey Chris, welcome to England! I've been to Highgate many times over the years... So glad you included Wombwell's sleeping lion - it has always been a favourite. Regarding the vandalism, in the 50s/60s, The Egyptian Avenue was featured in horror movies, and ghost stories on TV, including Hammer's world famous DRACULA movies, with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing... It went on to become a bit of a magnet for kids and new-age / occult gatherings on Halloween... and the legend that real vampyres were buried at Highgate was born.

We're looking at an archeological dig site 1000 years in the future. It's beautiful, I'd love to walk through there. So peaceful.

I think the fact that we will all be returned to nature, to earth, resonates with how the cemetery is in it’s now natural form.

We have the same problem with cemeteries here in America. Granted, England is much more ancient but greed and disrespect has no national boundaries. I believe the modern cremation industry has been helped by exposing cemeteries for what they are, the idea of permanent resting in a beautiful setting depends on perpetual trust arrangements to care for the grounds. Once a few generations pass, families forget about their ancestors. Spreading ashes is more economical and makes more realistic sense.

I’m totally all about cemetery walks and reading the oldest stones. Just makes you wonder what these people were like when they were here on earth. I’m not alone here while being a cemetery enthusiast because I see all the comments of people enjoying these videos. I’d love to walk this place for days just to see every part of it. Thank you for this video and I’m going to see if there are more as I just stumbled across this one. I’m your girl when visiting any older cemetery and I really enjoyed it but what a shame that vandals felt the need to desecrate these burial grounds. Shame on them. I’d love to help restore this cement too. It would be fascinating but no end to the work needed here.

Absolutely Beautiful !!! Being a huge fan of Rod Stewart I know he is from Highgate, I believe his mom and dad are in this cemetery, he also worked here as a gravedigger for a short time before he became famous.

Wow, just wow !!! No doubt the most beautiful cemetery / graveyard I've ever seen !!! Perhaps it's the overcrowded graves stacked in on top of one another, the crowded markers, and the variety of artistic style in the gravestones and crypts. The fact that it's so overgrown by ivy and trees makes it feel like a surreal and enchanted place. My folks were grave diggers and cemetery care takers for generations, as kids we grew up next to two huge graveyards that were wonderful places to play, explore and contemplate life and death. Highgate would have been magic to explore as a child.

Hi Chris, I have seen a couple of people's tours of HG, they are rather sanitized. Yours is by far the best one I've seen. Side note: Jean Simmons (actress), was in the 1991 Revival of Dan Curtis's Dark Shadows, which aired on NBC. She played: Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, the role Joan Bennett originated in the 1966-1971 DS. It is sickening to me that people have little respect for the dead. I hope they begin taking care of this beautiful cemetery again.

I can't imagine a cemetery being abandoned. Such a huge amount of history and the fact millions of people have ancestors buried there. A GoFundMe would be helpful to hire maintenance and security. We have some very old cemeteries in our city, and one of the oldest has a monthly chapter of individuals who come to the cemetery to clean it up. It's quite a task but well worth it.

It's a completely different style from the graveyard in my country, but it's very beautiful here. When I visit the graveyard, I sometimes feel relieved of stress and relaxed. Is there anyone who feels the same as me?

What a beautiful cemetery. When I was in Iceland, our Air B&B was across from an old cemetary. The vintage would be about the same as this one. Each day we saw adults, with groups of teens, who would cut grass and trim up the plants to keep it looking nice. I'm not sure if they were Scouts or a day camp, but it was heartwarming to see these kids doing their part. I like that they are connecting the current generation with the older ones.

It's a stunning place full of history and I love how it's over grown in places adds to the mystery and atmosphere, beautiful .

How fleeting our lives are! I can't help think of the Feb. morning graveside service for my mother about 25 years ago and how sorrowful people were. I had several old school chums come to it; people I hadn't seen since childhood It seemed like such a profound moment yet, in time, I imagine her grave and all those of my parent's friends who decided to buy adjoining plots in a sentimental moment (they were all products of the Great Depression and WWII), will join the ranks of Highgate when anyone w/o some notoriety and celebrity will just be names and ivy covered granite and marble. Oh well, life is for the living, right? Thank you for this shared visit.

I loooove cemeteries especially old ones. North Carolina had these tiny really old cemeteries I oddly kept coming across. A couple were little civil war family plots. One was a block away....and nobody had ever noticed it. My favorite was in Beaufort North Carolina by this old presvretar...or Lutheran ...huge old church with graves from 1600s. On my original Facebook I had taken pictures. In fact I had several old cemeteries...but anyways I find cemeteries so peaceful and I mean.haunted but happily so.

Hi Chris, great see you again. Chris, my ancestors lived in England from around 800AD to 1834. They were Vikings who landed in or around what is now known as Durham on East Coast of England. My last name is patronymic and means, son of watchful, I can trace my ancestors back to 1540, in Whaley, England, during the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII. From there they moved Southeast to Little Bolton within Manchester, England in the 1700s. My Great-great-great grandfather was a Millwright for wealthy Cotton mill owner who owned 5 story industrial cotton mills southeast of Manchester. Near the end of their time in England they became debt slaves in towns called Bugsworth, and Hayfield. In Bugswoth there was, and is a early canal, and the regents of the multi story cotton mill my ancestor worked as a millwright. Chris I know England pretty well, and her is a brief list of things you might look into. Malmesbury Abbey where King Athelstan was laid to rest. He Wrote the Masonic Constitution in 927, and was the grandson of King Alfred the Great who saved England from the viking hoards. Next would be the Ness of Broadgar, on the Orkney Islands. I was a a place of incredible knowledge, and religious Temples, and Henges in the early Bronze Age. It is a spectacular place that is beautiful and literal magic. Next up is the amazing Maeshowe tomb, Next up would be Newgrange in Ireland, which is 5,000 years old, and is a masterwork of neolithic design and engineering with deep spiritual meaning. Fourknocks, Knowth, Le Dehus, Loughcrew, the Standing Stones of Callanish, and the British Museum. Chris this list is meant as a respectful acknowledgment of your terrific work. A temporary area of storage for caskets with remains is referred to as a “Receiving Vault.” They were used when a big mausoleum or large memorial was being built to receive their remains, then they would be interred. Also, they were used in the instance that a pandemic killed so many people the grave diggers couldn’t keep up. So, remains would rest there until they were interred. My uncle died up north in February and the ground was so frozen they couldn’t bury him yet. He rested in the receiving chapel area until the ground thawed.

I spent a few weeks in London in the early 1980's on a Troop trip from my Station in Germany ... Being a lover of history , my wife and I rode the Tubes and walked to many smaller cemetaries in and around London ( I wore out a pair of boots on this trip )! One grave in particular sticks in my mind as one of the most unusual I've ever seen , tucked into a London suburb cemetary and it belonged to the famous English explorer Richard Burton . He and his wife were in a replica of a large tent and and campsite ! The tomb had metal stairs at the back that led to a window above that revealed the interior with all the accoutrements of travel and life abroad . We spent an entire hour having lunch inside this beautiful Cemetary and its history and Monuments to life lived . One of my best memories of London .

Those memorials over the graves had to have cost a fortune. I'm saddened that people don't keep places like this cleaned up and give it more respect. This is sad!

Thanks for doing this video. I visited Highgate (both sides) years ago, and we weren't allowed to wander in Highgate West; you had to take the tour to get in. So you are fortunate to have that opportunity. We were told that it was abandoned around the end of WWII, and since families couldn't bear to think of death after the war, they stopped coming to the cemetery to clean up their loved ones' graves. It may not be a haunted place, but I was haunted by it for days afterwards. Looking forward to more from you in England.

I agree with you. High gate is beautiful. I hope they preserve some of the wild growth. It gives the place a peaceful atmosphere. Almost like it's sheltered, a safe place in the city. If I lived in London this would be a favorite place to visit to think and rest. Even as you walked us around I was feel a sense of calm. I also feel like the overgrowth makes it feel alive (strange for a cemetery I know). It's beautiful in it's manmade design but mother nature has added her own mark to make it exquisite. I'd be happy to be buried there. I miss old cemeteries like these. The US has too many cookie cutter commercial cemeteries that all look alike.

Thank you for being respectful in your filming and commentary. A very good tour of a portion of the place - 37 acres in total! There are still relatives visiting graves here, some KZfaqrs forget this and try to sensationalise elements of the history and spout nonsense to attract attention. I hope that any future plans don't result in the loss of many mature trees, in order to "open up the view". It's lovely to feel enclosed in a woodland setting, and the view across the City will now be full of high rise blocks that have taken over the skyline. There has to be selective thinning of Trees for safety reasons, and to maintain access, but please let's save as many as possible!

I was just there at Highgate a few weeks ago with my family as we traveled from the US. We took a guided tour and we were completely fascinated with the amazing cemetery features and history. Saw HighGate in 2018, most beautiful cemetery I’m sure I’ll ever see. The history, the lives and stories of the people here are just amazing! So many well known famous people. A must see, and take the tour, if you love cemeteries.

London is by far my favorite city i have ever been too, loved all the history, great beer, great food, lots of good looking people to look at. Would love to go back and visit the IWM again and visit other museums i didn't get the opportunity to.

This honestly is such a interesting place that I would love to hang out and explore and just experience the unique work, the overgrown nature over the man made structures is a awesome vibe. I don't know why I love it so much. Not everywhere, but for specific places it's just such a cool look to see nature sprawling out over man made locations. In sorta a eerie way, then add on that it's this elaborate cemetery and catacombs/crypts
