On June 3rd, I drove up to Algonquin Provincial Park and did my first solo backpacking trip. This is day 1 hiking from the trailhead to Faya Lake. The trail starts with a fairly steep climb with lots of rocks and roots to trip over and hungry mosquitoes, gnats and deer flies. Faya Lake is an incredible campsite and it's actually the only campsite on the lake so you are totally secluded from any other hikers, not to mention it's beautiful. I highly recommend camping at Faya Lake but just don't forget bug spray! The stars at night were the highlight of my night there.

Lots of nice things about this video! Well done, Reid. 1. The Ravens shirt! (Hi from Ottawa!) 2. Success in starting the fire! 3. The timelapse @ the end. Going to watch Day 2 now.

Hey there! Nice to know some locals are watching! I just bring waterproof matches and a lighter now, that fire starter wasn't worth the fuss. It's awesome what you can see without light pollution.

You should keep trying with the firesteel. The Light My Fire one works pretty well. Dryer lint ignites easily too! Orionid meteor shower tonight! I'm going camping tomorrow near Clyde Forks and hope to see some.

Brady Richards hey thanks man! The trail is great, first time there. And I love the backpack. Got a second 40L one that I'm using in Europe right now. No complaints.

Great video. Stayed in the same spot while winter camping. It was nice to see it in the summertime. Great job with the flint and steel. It can take some time to get it to catch. I've always used the back of my knife to strike. Do you find it makes a better spark with the blade?

Thanks a lot Kris! It was my first time using the flint and steel, so I haven't actually used the back of my knife. I will in the future though because it chewed up the knife a little bit. I'm headed back to the same trail in two weeks to make another video with a friend, hoping I'll have better luck getting it going.

Good video. I hiked there myself on June 20th that same year, and got a lot of black fly bites on my right leg under my sock but waking up the next morning on the summer solstice was worthwhile. (BTW: your Instagram link "isn't available.")

MrJx4000 I'm heading back to Algonquin to do this hike again, but this time with some friends. The flies are something else eh? Thanks for watching! I'll update the description to include my updated instagram as I recently changed it to @reidzandbelt
