I love everything Highlander. But it’s something I grew up with.

Queen didn’t fit the tone? That’s the first I ever heard that said. Highlander is a great movie for the right people I guess. Glad I’m one of them. Sorry you didn’t like it, whatever you do don’t watch the sequels then. Agreed on the transfer it looks amazing compared to all previous formats. 👍🏻😀

I have never liked this film, I’ve tried to watch it three times and once all the way through. So glad it looks good for the fans.

I bought the steelbook of Highlander 4K. Again it looks awesome on 4K

Again, I was in high school, a junior, when this came out. Saw it in the theater, should have been in my wheelhouse (fantasy, Connery, Queen, sword fights, Scotland, etc) …. BUT NO!!! Can’t stand any of Chris Lambert’s acting or movies. I think you are spot on with this one and NO, growing up with it doesn’t equal a like or love for it. I’ve never owned it, never will - wouldn’t take it for free. But everyone has their taste and that’s what makes books, movies, music so valuable - there’s something for everyone! Happy New Year!

Didn't you have the same issue with Lost Boys and Fright Night? Let down because it didn't reach your expectations based on the hype that went along with those releases?

Russel Mulcahy has a another movie called Resurrection that Vinegar Syndrome released. It’s a Seven ripoff that I actually liked more than Seven. I recommend it. It also stars Christopher Lambert.

I love this this movie. Pre ordered it on Amazon months ago. I rarely ( almost never ) double dip, but when I saw the artwork on the steel book I had to. This movie is something that is very rare, (especially compared with movies today) it is a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end. The biggest problem with highlander is the poor attempts at sequels. The story ended, left no back door for sequels, but they tried anyway and they were all awful. There was a TV series but it was really more of a prequel, it was ok. Someday I hope they remake this one movie as a trilogy ending where this ended and expanding his adventures in the past. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.

Thanks for the 4K review, I might have to upgrade this one. Just to play Devil’s advocate, I didn’t grow up with the movie, first saw it a year ago, and it’s one of my favorites! Credit to you though for keeping it real.

When the movie first came out, we had never seen anything quite like it with its cinematography and its unique transitions. So a lot of people have intense nostalgia for it. Also check out the tv series which is very good. The movie sequels not so much. Avoid the second movie like the plague

I'm one that grew up with this and I do love it. And the soundtrack who wants to live forever breaks me still. I hope.you.watch it again.

I truly believe you had to have grown up with Highlander to love it

Love this film growing up, had multiple versions on VHS and DVD. Unfortunately it's not available in Canada yet and ordering from the states doubles the price due to shipping...... and if It gets hit wuth duties it could go higher so I'll have to hold off for a Canadian release.

I love Highlander (because I grew up with it) but I didn’t like the transfer, they could’ve done it better. If you thought this movie was bad wait until you see 2. 👎🏻 I hate 2 but will buy it if it comes out to 4K.

Grest review. As with so many films, it's a product of its time, and for some of us there back then, seeing things like this,it was pretty cool. It doesn't hold up as well as some others (The Terminator), but for some with the memory of these types when they were new and unique, it's a great revisit. The Queen music is so associated to this film, it's almost odd to hear those songs outside of the movie. I have the 30th anniversy bluray, and will probably upgrade

I accept that this is not God Father quality but it is a great film still. It is schlocky but it is one of my all time favourites (a little like Flash Gordon).. The Studio Canal boxset is impressive too. The Director cuts his chops directing pop videos for artists such as Duran Duran. The Queen soundtrack is impeccable.

I don't think it's nostalgia that people latch on to with Highlander, I think it's the cheese and creativity that people love. A lot that Highlander is, Hollywood is devout of now-a-days.

I feel the opposite of Ken, without the Queen soundtrack it wouldn't be not that good.

There can only one midlevel media lol. I felt the same way when I first watched it in the 90's. It was hyped up even then but it grows on you for sure. I preordered the slipcover version but that steelbook definitely looks great. There's been a lot of criticism about the release. Its always been a rough viewing. The problem is pretty much the source but it does look significantly better on 4K

Sound for me was thin and lacked the rich sonic sound the Queen score deserved but given the price. We got an Studio canal version in the UK with all the extra bits. Russel Mulcahy was a video director before he made Highlander. Hence the editing style you mentioned. You had to be there in the cinema to see this one.

Lambert is French, and his name is pronounced with a clichéd silent T.

I love Highlander and best looking version ever released. Some images just can't be made any better due to source material. The editing jumps around due to the director doing music videos at the time. I respect your opinions Ken but for me it is a favorite.

I have known about the Highlander movies and I think I watched the tv series back in the day. But I don't find this universe appealing or great or anything. Anyway I recently bought the director's cut DVD and I still didn't find it all that great. To me it's just another sword and sorcery movie. But I'm more of a horror fan so perhaps I'm not the ideal person to rate this film. Good review and cool video Ken!👉😃👈

love this movie, yes its cheese and a product of the time but its just great! Pure escapism with a superb soundtrack from Queen and the late Michael Kaman. I have the Studio Canal 2 disc 4K Collectors Edition and its a truly epic set. Yes I understand its not for everyone and newcomers will find it harder to understand the love that older fans love about this movie but we cant love all the same movie, hey! 🙂

Ken, I didn’t see this in theaters when it first came out, because I wasn’t 17 yet. I did watch it on HBO a few years later in college and I enjoyed it. I especially liked the Queen songs on it. This movie was released at the height of the MTV music video era in the 80s which explains the style. It was kind of panned by critics and was a flop upon its initial theatrical release. Upon its home video release and after repeated airings on cable it gained a huge cult following. So much so that the inevitable sequels came in the early 90s and they were all terrible. So in comparison to the (I believe) three subsequent sequels the first film is a masterpiece. I did grow to like this movie more on repeated viewings, and I was happy to pick it up on 4K. I’m just glad that “Highlander” got a stand alone 4K, and we didn’t have to buy a box set from a boutique label with all the garbage sequels included to own it.

A French man playing a Scot and a Scots man playing an Egyptian says it all Ken. I grew up in the 80's and its one of my favourites (Warts and all), but why would you double dip on this if your not a fan🤔. I got the collectors edition here in the UK and it us superb. Happy Halloween ladies 🤣

I think I'm going to upgrade to the 4k sometime it's worth it The collectors set with a small poster pins art cards a 64 page booklet and a prequel comic book is the on I need as well as the steel book Connor MCcloud is truly immortal and Clancy Brown makes the perfect villain better to burn out than to fade away I love highlander I would want the 3rd and endgame on on 4 I'd buy it happy new years 🎊🎊💃💃🍻🍻 I think you need to watch Highlander several more times Ken you might like it better by then

I wasn’t supposed to watch this because I already watched a Highlander 4K review, and you said there can be only one, but... Now that I have, what’s the difference between corny and goofy that a film can be both? Highlander is a great concept but this is not a well-made movie, nor a well-told story. It had a lot of potential but it’s doubly sad that this is the best of the franchise. Can we have hope for the remake? I doubt it. Bless Henry Cavill but that man’s career is curated so I fear for anything he cast in. I hate Queen with a passion but their music in this film is about the only that they made I can listen to and enjoy. I picked up that beautiful steelbook! It was $21.99 but I I had $10 in Best Buy Rewards to redeem.

The picture quality turned out better than I expected but they used a lot of DNR because it was a VERY grain heavy movie. They got rid of a lot of grain

I truly love this movie. Of course I grew up with it and I understand everything is subjective but really disagree with you on your review of the movie but appreciate your honesty. I know this is isn't in the same league as Jaws, Godfather etc etc but for the story that was told and when it was released, everything just worked for me. Thanks for the review of the 4K aspects of the disk.

The Queen soundtrack 100% fits this not sure what you are thinking about ? this just pips Flash Gordon for the best Queen movie soundtrack.

I bought the steel from Best Buy This one you are reviewing and hopefully the collectors edition coming from Zavi. I love Highlander. I loved the series as well. Corny?!? Goofy?!? Blasphemy! I thought it was just okay.

I was in 8th grade when it came out and it certainly imprinted itself on me with the action and music. Wish it had a different cover though.

I grew up hearing this was the best movie ever..but my 1st viewing of the flick was last year for me. Bought the steelbook Blu at the beginning of 2021 and I was SOOOO disappointed. I was like, “What is it that people love about the film so much? I do NOT understand the hype..at all.” Like you, when Sean Connery entered the movie it got better and the concept is good-but in no way is this a Blu I’d revisit often. So disappointed..no upgrade here

I was disappointed with the sound. Should have been redone in Atmos or DTS:X. Once I get my theater upgrade going, I will be using Auro3D upmix with this one.

Have you heard anything about alternative inside cover artwork? I was in either Best Buy or Target & took the slipcover off. The inner artwork was totally different. I can't drive the hour & a half back to look again & it's driving me crazy that every unboxing has the same artwork. 😖

Also again I really hope they do a 4K release of Highlander 2. Yes I know story wise it's weak but by itself it is a fun action film with some really good practical effects, plus with the multiple cuts of the film (Theatrical Cut, Renegade Edition, Director's Cut) it would make for an interesting package....... and thanks to Highlander: The Source it can no longer be seen as the worst Highlander Film.

I think you were just born a little too late to enjoy this movie. It was always on cable when I was growing up and it is in my top 5 action fantasies, along with Beastmaster and the Conan movies. Ps. The second one will really fuck with your mind. The immortals are all banished aliens from another dimension.

I like this movie, but acknowledge it's flaws. The writing could be better in some places, and Queen's song work great for the 1985 scenes, not so well for the historical scenes. I do like the 4k transfer, but there are a few patchy areas. I think the director's cut is better than the original American version, it gives the story more depth.

Dude, it is against the law not to like HIGHLANDER. I understand your initial reticence, however. It's not an easy film to "get" on first viewing, but once you lock into it, it's fantastic. I saw it in London, in September, 1986, and it's remained among my most favourite films.
