Fun fact: Queen was hesitant at first about writing music for the film; coming off of their attempt with Flash Gordon (1980). But when they were approached by the film's director, Russell Mulcahy, they had just come off of their success at Live Aid in 1985, and was eager to get back into recording new music. They originally wanted to record one song: "Princes of the Universe" at the beginning of the film. But Mulcahy pieced together a 20-minute rough cut of the film to show the group. After seeing that cut, they said they'll contribute five more tracks for the film. They are: "A Kind of Magic" "One Year of Love" "Gimme The Prize" "Don't Lose Your Head" "Who Wants to Live Forever" And they even recorded a cover-mix of Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" that's heard in the scene where Kurgan kidnaps Brenda and is driving through the streets of New York. During this time, they also wrote and recorded the song "One VIsion" for the film Iron Eagle (1986). The songs they wrote for Highlander and Iron Eagle appear on Queen's A Kind of Magic album; released in 1986. Their European tour included their epic performance at Wembley Stadium, and it was their final tour with Freddie Mercury. A year later he was diagnosed with AIDS, but continued to make more music up until his passing in 1991.

Highlander is a great movie. The immortals in the movie can sense the presence of other immortals. Which is why he could sense the Kurgan when Brenda was following him. And why he couldn't ever sneak up on Ramirez. They were just born with different abilities that can be honed over time. Which is why they absorb the powers of each other through the Quickening. I have always liked Clancy Brown in this role. His villain is so over the top.

Yeah, the writers really paid attention to detail on the immortals being able to sense each other. There was the church scene when we could see MacLeod looking very serious and scowling because he could sense Kurgan walking up behind him. Connor's facial expression spoke volumes that he could sense this evil presence approaching him.

You'll love this crazy bit because it's actually true. The battle at the beginning of the movie, the McLeods versus the Frasers was not stuntmen or extras. It was local Scotsmen who are hired for one day of shooting. All assembled there in the morning to do dry run of the battle. The director, Russell Mulcahy, loved it, moved a couple cameras to get better angles and then, dismissed everybody for lunch. Now, extra catering had been brought in for the dozens of Scotsman to have lunch onset. Only, nobody told the Scotsman. Instead they made their way into the local village pub and had lunch there. A very liquid lunch! When everybody assembled back after lunch to do the actual battle scene to film it. Nobody seemed to notice that the Scotsman were Pissed Drunk! The director said Action the Scotsman attacked each other and tried to kill each other...for real! They just went out of control. There were punch-ups, guys trying to kill each other with prop weapons. The guy who was hired to be the priest was in on it. Until he realised that it was going too far, he tried to drag unconscious guys off the field. The director could not believe what he was witnessing! It was best fake battle he'd ever seen in his life! He was sending cameramen out with handhelds to get great angles and close-ups. It was only when everything calmed down again that he realised that it wasn't fake. Surprisingly only a handful of people ended up in the hospital! The battle you see going on in the background behind Connor and the Kurgan, Angus and Dougal, was real! It was the craziest thing ever put to celluloid that people know about!

You can buy it but the album is called It's A Kind Of Magic. Fantastic album. Every Queen fan should own it.
@FreddyKurganNimmo
@FreddyKurganNimmo 5 ай бұрын
Queen did *not* "did the ENTIRE soundtrack". The original score was composed by Michael Kamen. The album is titled "A Kind Of Magic"(no "It's" in the title). But that album was NOT the soundtrack to the movie. While it did have songs from the film(which were different than the versions used in the film), it was also missing 2 songs used in the film(Hammer To Fall & A Dozen Red Roses For My Darling/New York, New York, which was later reworked into the album track Don't Lose Your Head), and included several songs which had absolutely NOTHING to do with the movie(One Vision, Pain Is So Close To Pleasure, and Friends Will Be Friends).
@jasonondik6003
@jasonondik6003 5 ай бұрын
@FreddyKurganNimmo I over spoke when I used "Entire" but they were both so enamored by the music I got caught up in feeling. I know there were songs (like New York, New York) that are in the film but were not on It's A Kind Of Magic, originally but more than 90% of the songs in the movie are on this album. The tracks on that album that weren't a part of the movie were written for Highlander but not chosen/used in the film, which is how they came to be. I didn't include all the particulars you pointed out because it would have been extraneous to write 3 paragraphs about an album 2 women, who like Queen but, whobdidn't seem to know of the albums existence. I was mainly pointimg out: 'here is where you can hear the music from Highlander". Once they hear the album a few times you can teach a masterclass on it. Nit-picky nerd.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! RIP, Sean Connery, 1930-2020. The original script was a lot darker, but before I get into that, the Idea came from Gregory Widen, who was a film student on vacation in Scotland, he was in a museum of sorts and saw a beautifully restored suit of armor and thought to himself: "What if the guy who wore this suit was alive right now? What if you owned all these ancient weapons and each had their story to tell?" The script was called Shadow Clan, then The Dark Knight, and finally Highlander. The script was a lot darker than the final cut of the movie: Connor Macleod was born in 1408 rather than 1518. Rather than being banished, he realizes he's immortal and leaves home. Heather doesn't exist in this version, but Macleod was engaged to the daughter of a blacksmith, who was a friend of the family. It takes Macleod 3 years rather than 3 months to become a better swordsman, trained by Ramirez. Ramirez was a real Spaniard rather than an Egyptian, born in 1290, and was murdered by his best friend after he slept with his fiancee. The Kurgan, going under the alias Carl William Smith, wasn't a brutal savage warrior, but a cold blooded killer, collecting human heads(skulls) as trophies of his kills. Connor Macleod goes under the name Richard Turpin and attends the funeral of one of his sons, while his other sons, all in their late 40's, early 50's, see him as an immortal. In this version, Immortals do have children, but they lack the supernatural abilities to heal and communicate telepathically. The climax takes place at the Statue Of Liberty, where Macleod defeats The Kurgan, but it's left ambiguous if he's still immortal or not, after he receives The Prize.

Yes when an Immortal kills another they drain not only their power (Quickening) but often at least parts of their knowledge and memories. They don't fight on Holy ground for two reasons, first regardless of who wins Holy ground drains both of their quickening, and the results are disastrous. As cheesy as it is, the cool thing about Highlander is it just created its own mythology, unique to it: there is a species of immortals, they are drawn to each other to fight, and each one who wins a fight collects all the energy from his opponent, and every opponent that one had killed; until finally there is one last one. And his prize, is getting to be mortal and dying of old age.

The Highlander movie was supposed to be a one-off film. But they made a total of five movies, one animated series, two tv series, and one animated movie. And now I heard they are making a trilogy remake of the first movie starring Henry Cavill as Connor MacLeod, and it's being directed by Chad Stahelski, the same man that directed the four movies of John Wick series.

When the studio approached Sean Connery, he was not interested in in the lead role, but he did find the role of Ramirez to his liking. Not certain who reached out to Queen and inquired if they would be interested in contributing [ALL THE TRACKS] to the soundtrack, but that person should be a legend. 🍻👏🏻🍻

Seeing you ponder all those questions makes me realize how much we were robbed of in Poland because of the translation. And it's not a bad translation but the Polish title was "The Immortal". So much of guess work taken away...
@davidcosta2244

That's the best translation of Highlander? I would've thought that since someone that's from the Scottish Highlands is a highlander, then it would be somewhat of a universal thing.
@artursandwich1974
@artursandwich1974 5 ай бұрын
@@davidcosta2244 when I say "not a bad translation" : 1. I don't mean the best possible; 2. I'm talking about the inside - narration and dialogs (see above ".... but the Polish title..."). And while we do have a word for people living at higher altitudes, it's connotation is rather closer to Appalachian redneck than Scottish jovial fighter. I'd say the translator and/or the distributor would've been justified in thinking such title wouldn't be enticing enough. So they took to the next best thing, forgetting about the late reveal in the movie. That's nothing compared to the pickle translator got himself into with "Diehard" ("Glass Trap"). Now go and save the wit from the title in sequels with this one... And yet - if it had been a stand alone film with no sequels, no one would be giving them a hard time about it. Sorry, got carried away - translation is my hobby horse.

26:38 they gain the knowledge of the person they decapitated so when the Kurgan (Clancy Brown) killed Ramirez (Sean Connery) he gained the knowledge of Ramirez and all the immortals he killed. The final one will have the knowledge of all the immortals which is why it’s dangerous for an evil one to win it all.

He was a good dude. So this movie still feels, a bit, like part of the mighty heart that pumped in my crazy childhood of fantasy adventuring with friends. The dream still lives - sometimes the tabletop games still happen.

12:26 Practicing 7-8 hours a day for 2-3 weeks. The sword spin was Clancy Brown’s idea. He wanted to show off that Kurgen wasn’t just a brute that swung a big sword. He’s a several thousand year old immortal with sword skills that a regular human being couldn’t even fathom. Fun fact: there was supposed to be a scene where Kurgen faces off against a Turkish immortal that wielded duel scimitars. But instead of running or fighting Kurgen, he tells Kurgen that he’s lived for over a thousand years and is tired of life and wants to die, but he couldn’t kill himself. So he begs Kurgen to end it for him. Kurgen tells him, out of respect for his bravery, he’ll grant him a quick and merciful death, which he does. There’s only still photos, supposedly nothing was ever recorded. It’s speculated that the reason this scene was never made was because it humanized Kurgen too much.

Now about the movie, Conner McCleod, after killing an enemy, gains their power, and he becomes immortal, the only way to kill an immortal is by beheading them. And again, the person who beheads the other, gains their powers. Another great movie for you girls to check out, is Knight Moves, where Christopher Lambert, is a grand master Chess Champion, and has to stop a serial killer.

Christopher (or more accurately Christophe) Lambert (Connor Macleod) was a French model and actor who barely spoke English when he made his first films, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, and Highlander. The line about his accent addressed this. He was almost legally blind when he made the film, and now I believe he is legally blind. Besides Macleod, he's best known as Raiden in the Mortal Kombat film in the 1990s, but then voiced Raiden again in the game Mortal Kombat 11. Clancy Brown (The Kurgan) had made only one other film before this, The Bride starring Sting, and he played Frankensteins's monster. He was paid next to nothing for this film, receives no royalties, and he damn near killed Connery during their fight. The funny thing is, he's one of the most beloved characters of the whole franchise. Yep, he's Mr. Krabs, and Lex Luthor, Sgt. Zim in Starship Troopers, Captain Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption, and Savage Opress in Star Wars The Clone Wars. He's amazing! Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT bother with any of the sequels...they get sillier and weirder and make less and less sense, with one exception, kinda...there was a Highlander TV series in the 90s starring Adrian Paul as Duncan Macleod, Connor's cousin, and the film Highlander: Endgame kinda ties up Connor's full story...but the concept of the prize works only if you never see another Highlander film, or only watch the TV series...otherwise...it's an annoyance. Now the Good News is Henry Cavill is teaming with John Wick director Chad Stahelski to reboot Highlander...but, this is also the bad news, too. I love this film, and Cavill would make an amazing Connor, I am just leery of a reboot. It has been green-lit, and is in pre-production. Okay, Connor's ladies... - Kate (1500s) played by Celia Imrie, who mainly does costume dramas and odd comedies or dramas involving older women. However, she had a small role in Star Wars Episode I as a Naboo fighter pilot. She is the most successful of the three, as she has appeared in roles in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films, Nanny McPhee, Calendar Girls, and Bridget Jones's Diary. - Heather (or Blossom, 1500s) played by Beatie Edney is probably best known for the Oscar-nominated Daniel Day-Lewis drama In the Name of the Father besides Highlander. - Brenda (1980s) played by Roxanne Hart has done movies and TV and is in so many things...it's useless to go further.
