Because a TD would give the Lions the time/opportunity to win with a single TD. They wanted to run down the clock and win with a field goal at the last possible moment.

In order to keep the ball longer and run more time off the clock. In return giving the opposing team less time to score. Happens often at the end of a close game when the team with the ball has a lead .
