Highlights of the 2023 Australian Model Expo scale model show

Here are my personal highlights of the 40th Australian Model Expo which was held in Melbourne in June 2023. I don't show every model, I selected the ones which really impressed me the most.
I've broken it up into chapters so you can jump to the models which interest you the most:

(Apologies up front for the quality of my camera focus in some sections of this video. If I could go back again today and re-record it I would, but sadly the Expo is all over again for another year!)

Thanks for this and your light-hearted commentary.👍👍👍 I was there and missed much of what you filmed . I think the smell of fried food distracted me.🤣😂🤣. Agree about the lighting. Always raised by many.🌝

Great video, Dave! The Japanese aircraft display was fantastic. I don't think I've ever seen so many in one spot. The dioramas were stunning. Amazing creativity all around. Thanks for making this video!

The two helicopters are in order a Westland WS-61 "Sea King" (British Licenced Sikorsky S-61) And the Bell AH-1Z Viper or possibly the AH-1(4B) W which was the test version. These differ from the standard "Cobra" having 4 rotor blades, twin engines and the AH-1Z having an upgraded Target sight system (TSS) 😉

Great show Dave. I thought the bust of the woman with the skulls in her bonnet(?) next to Princess Leia was brilliant. I also like ships although I'm working up a hatred for a Revell Mayflower, vintage 1966 (yipes)! It has more flash than Gordon so I'm putting it down to rubbish 1620 trees, but I won't be defeated. Nice one again, all the best.

Thanks for the insight Dave, as you mentioned, the tables are looking bare. I'm surprised, I thought this was the biggest comp in Australia? Or is that another? Only 2 months to go for ours up here in QLD, QMHE.

Hi Grant, yes, apparently this is the biggest show in Aus. Apparently entries were huge last year, perhaps this year is a natural decline compared to that?

Apparently it was in response to "Happy 40th" for the 40th Expo. Happy 40 = P-40

That railway dio is "straight", I.e. not done at an angle. I do mine like that. Judges, I suspect, Mark you down for that. You're right - it should be a deciding factor regarding imagination and storytelling for dioramas. Thx.

It's by a modeller named Wayne Kohlmann. It took out Best in Show and the People's Choice awards!

I think the main reason for your blurry photos is because a dirty lens. If you use your cellphone it is critical to wipe the lenses before taking photos like yours. All the fingering and talking on the phone makes the camera lens dirty from smudge and that has a huge effect on the light reflecting. Nice video. 👍🏻

Dear me Mark and I thought you were going to complain about not getting 16minutes and 41seconds of your life back. Silly me. Perhaps next time you could turn off earlier.. or not even post. Personally I thought the presentation, and editing, was quite good. You see I enjoyed it.. and at my age time is precious. But that’s just me…!!…👵🇦🇺🇺🇸
