Incredible class from Portland when Seattle played it out when Portland had a player down and Portland plays the ball back to Seattle's side of the field.

Montero's goal is reminiscent of a goal v. Houston in 2010 during Alvaro Fernandez's home debut. Assisted by a GK and quick swivel shot.

Gentleman's agreement. Portland had two home games against Seattle, Seattle only one against Portland. One chance a year for tifo. There is some semblance of respect.

1848 when it was officially named football. and rugby 1859. They say AF was created through the combination of soccer and rugby because it contains both a mixture of both :) and i'm not fused what people call it. At the end of the day, its still the same sport and great to see so many American's starting to enjoy the beautiful game

Just because you see empty seats does not mean people are not there. There is a huge grass patch by the scoreboard, it's a popular spot to watch the match. And. they rank second in attendance in the league of course they can fill a big stadium.

"Soccer" is an Oxford -er abbreviation of Association. Association Football was often referred to as Soccer and Rugby Football was called Rugger, etc. It's a word that grew to prominence in England, not America, in the late 1800s. It's not just some silly word Americans use because we refuse to align with the prevailing naming consensus. We already had a Football, and they already called it Soccer. It makes perfect sense.

Two things. 1) The first American Football game was played in 1869, around the time Soccer was first played in England. 2) Yes, it was called Football. Or Association Football, to differentiate from other sports also called Football. Or, for short, Soccer. The word "Soccer" first came into use in England in the 1880s. For what it's worth, I don't really care what people call it. I just get annoyed at people saying "It's not 'Soccer', it's 'Football'" when both are accurate.

South Africa, Oceania, and most of East Asia (Except for India) Call it Soccer as well. Also, American football was adapted from Rugby Football. On both counts, Ask the English because they named both.

Nah, the Sounders are just fine in CenturyLink. The reason other MLS teams don't play in NFL stadiums is that the Sounders are the only team that can fill one.
@Hoppercool
@Hoppercool 11 жыл бұрын
You say the Red Bulls would have no problem filling an NFL stadium, yet acknowledge they can't even half-fill their own, smaller stadium. Have you forgotten all those years not even coming close to half-filling Giants Stadium? The simple fact is, no MLS team will ever come close to doing what Seattle has done attendance wise. They hold all the attendance records, and they always will.

i wish American had rivalries which were a couple of miles apart from each other rather than hundreds-thousands of miles apart. Add's to the tension of the game especially between the fans. Type in (Dundee, Dundee United) in google. Its amazing how close some teams are and are the definition of rivalries :)

Too bad we (Sounders) play poor defense and can't close out games against bottom of the table teams. I understand Sigi's decision to hold out Rosales and Tiffert to assure they're available for the San Jose game. Much more important. Could have playoff seeding implications

Plus, "Soccer" comes from the full name of the sport "asSOCIATION football" (to differentiate from "Rugby Football"), and like the person before me said... in England Soccer was first used and then brought over to North America. By the time they decided to just use "Football" in England, we had stayed with "Soccer"

Who cares dude, it is what it is... The title of American Football is not going to change. Most would probably agree that it is odd being called Football but I don't think the title will ever change. Both sports are fucking awesome, so why debate.

You just said that Montero is (at the moment) to blame for great attendance. You imply that they are here for Montero, and wouldn't stay for Alonso, Rosales, Zakuani? And that question is only valid assuming your statement is even sort-of right, which it isn't. He was right, you've no idea what you're talking about.

the sport has never been called soccer in England. I'm English. I did PE and learnt about the history of the sport. And from its rationalisation of the sport in the mid 19th century, we have called it football :) No idea why we'd call it football everywhere else but decide to call it soccer in American especially considering you version of football wasn't even created then :)

We say soccer, deal with it. American football is a type of football because points are scored on foot or via kick, just as a baton relay is still a foot race, even though the baton isn't kicked across the finish line. One could argue that the name football/soccer should be changed to netball or goalball, just as we have basketball or baseball based on the method of scoring. Or, even better, we could just leave the fucking names alone and enjoy different sports regardless of name.

The English called it "Soccer" first. It's short for Association Football, as there were multiple types of Football being played (such as Rugby Football), and the US already had a sport called Football when Soccer gained popularity. Stop pretending Soccer is some ignorant American word.
