Only a pass backwards or horizontal is not offside and Morgan was offside when the pass was made (there were not two defenders between her and the goal). In order for Morgan, who was behind the passer to not be offside then the pass would have had to have been right to her and not forward. Since the pass was a forward pass to someone in an offside position it was offside.

She was behind the ball and therefore not in an offside position. Law 11 doesn’t state anything about pass direction. The only way they judged offsides here must have been when the ball was played off the head of a SD player. The angles are poor on the replay and I am not convinced she was offside at that point.

@@JohnTell-nl5vv I mean it is in the laws. The only way to pass to another player who is offside, when the passing player is offside, is to pass to a player behind the balls location. Passing backwards is never an offside, even if the player is offside, and it is the only way for it not to be offside in this situation.

It was badly, incorrectly called offside on the play. So it needed video evidence to overturn or "proof" to overturn it. They clearly should have been able to tell even from off angle. Morgan was behind the ball when Sanchez played it. It's something/someone else or this is an absolute fail. But VAR literally can't think in 3D

@@nathanc8478 Direction of the pass doesn't matter (not in the laws). It's where the participating player is at the time it was played. Morgan was behind the ball so the number of defenders doesn't matter. She had to move forward just to get even with where Sanchez put the ball across. It's not where she is when she plays it.

@@thumper300zx when two players are offside it is only offside if it is a forward pass. Edit: I can think of only one time I have seen a team get away with it and it was Chelsea in a 2014 UEFA game. Other than that, I have seen a lot of offside calls that were not offside calls before VAR.
