so many people think ceramic brakes stop you faster, they don't, they are designed not to fade after continued use like steels do
@noneofyourbusiness42947 жыл бұрын
Moss they will stop you faster with a working system. Just a matter of fact due to higher friction. Steel brakes will do the job of course, but drive a 911 with those, go to 60mph, brake, then do the same with ceramic ones (the only personally tested example I have). You'll notice the difference the moment you hit the brake.
@nicht13377 жыл бұрын
None of your business Brakes can only stop you with as much force as the tires are able to put to the ground. Both ceramic and steel brakes easily achieve that, you won't find a car no matter how cheap, where the ABS doesn't trigger under heavy braking.
@TheCobra45017 жыл бұрын
Ceramic Brakes have a higher initial bite, so it will feel as if you were stopping quicker. On "slow" test like 60mph you probably wont notice much of a difference due to tires. If you are going faster then they will probably stop you guicker. This comes especially from the heat in the brake disc. Ceramic disk are much more heat resistant than Steel ones. That is one reason why larger disks can stop you better. They travel longer until they reach the calliper again and can cool down more in that time.
@christianbuczko14817 жыл бұрын
The biggest factor in stopping, is the friction with the road surface resulting from the tyres NOT the brakes. Better brakes last longer under heavy usage such as track driving, the car will stop in about the same distance even with good quality steel brakes. The steel brakes will just get hotter each time you brake, and eventually can boil the brake fluids and cause very severe brake fade as a result. Ceramic/carbon brakes can handle those high temperatures and will increase in performance at high temps.
@matthewzhang15797 жыл бұрын

James may Isn't your average driver, he is actually a very good driver but top gear and grand tour make him out to be a slow driver for a joke. If the highway code in its current state was bullshit then they would change it. It's mostly to do with the fact that we are still technically in the early 2000's, and that 50% of cars on the road today are from the 90's and 80's, so they have old style steel brakes which are less effective at high speeds.
@JakeRoot7 жыл бұрын
Maybe -- "50% of cars on the road today are from the 90's and 80's" -- are you sure about that? I don't live in the UK, but most cars on the road in the US are not much older than mid-90s. The vast majority are less than 15 years old, I reckon.
@Juniper4587 жыл бұрын
Ok I admit that was a miss type. But most cars on the roads in Europe today are around 20 years old, I remember that in the UK back in 2004 most cars were new and all the cars that were 10 years old or over just disappeared pretty much, so i guess what i was trying to say is that the number of new cars bought has gone down quite a lot in Europe for the last 15 years :P I guess in america its different :)
@JakeRoot7 жыл бұрын
A little different. We have a lot more spare cash for car purchases than most countries, plus our cars are cheaper (base model Mondeo costs 17k GBP for comparison, and that trend is reflected throughout the market). What people fail to realise is that the Highway Code was written back when cars had pathetic drum brakes with no power assistance and no ABS, and with crossply tyres and not modern radials Even with reaction time factored in, the Highway Code massively overestimates the distance needed to stop. It isn’t 1931 anymore and it badly needs updating to reflect the actual distances that modern vehicles can stop in, even average ones would stop miles behind the highway code’s stopping distance

@kingprone78462 ай бұрын
which in the uk is always weird coz they based their 110km/h limit on the maximum acceptable braking distance. But this is perhaps the reason why the limit is so poorly enforced there. I cant remember what the true limit should be with a modern car. 140 or 150 perhaps would get it up to the 100m.
@MrLukasboys4 жыл бұрын
In fairness to the highway code. They took the distance of reaction and braking together. However, they knew exactly when to break so the reaction time is much slower. It is designed to accomodate vehicles that have breaks that aren't factory new, but have degraded somewhat. Also don't confuse your reaction time from a reaction test to your reaction time when driving. When taking a test you are much more prepared. When you are on you're 350th commute to work in perfectly normal weather conditions and perfectly normal traffic you will absolutely be less reactive than when taking a reaction test.

The highway formula is a combination of reaction time distance (velocity × reaction time)/3.6 + braking distance (velocity squared/(250/coefficient of friction). For an accelerating body of assumed heavy load especially on highways with steady acceleration between 9 to 10 m/s^2, the 240 feet calculation is quite conservative actually. Modern vehicles may have better brakes and tires but humans have been humans since a long time.
@Oblivion9873 Жыл бұрын
you're outright wrong. the highway code explicitly states the reaction time distance is only 60 metres and braking distance 180, for a combined 240. 240 is not even in the correct ballpark as shown by how the bentley, the worse one, didn't even reach halfway (i.e. 120m). Even with a slow reaction time leading to 120m of delay to the braking it still wouldn't reach 240m, and that's with an incredibly heavy car. In a more normal one like the BMW? hahahahahaha

As someone who's had to do an emergency stop in a car other than a driving instructors car, having not done one for over a decade past the test, I can confirm that my vehicle stopped extremely quickly and it hurt. The figures in the Highway Code, for me and my vehicle at that time, were wildly inaccurate. From the video I have, have measured 40 metres, in the wet, from 60mph. The Highway Code says 73 metres in the dry at that speed.
@nbrooks17996 жыл бұрын
The Highway code says the STOPPING DISTANCE from 60 is 240 feet, which is reaction distance + braking distance. The BRAKING DISTANCE is 180 feet, even still the M6 and the Bentley pulled up in a fraction of that distance and so would any car with abs. However to increase speed limits they would need to consider the extra reaction distance but in theory a speed limit of 85mph would be possible on motorways with modern cars. Also 10% + 2 would enable you to do 95mph without getting a ticket. The fundamental problems are reaction distances because for some reason using mobiles while driving has made a comeback. And there are still cars on the road that are woefully outdated.

One second reaction time is about average actually, a driver not paying attention could have up to 3 second response time, even in this case when there's a predetermined braking point the reaction from the decision to brake to the braking takes something like 0.3 seconds. A driver paying attention will have a reaction time of somewhere around 0.5-0.7 seconds.

finally someone who understands that you can have discs of the uranus for brakes and it still wont do you any good if your tires are made out of corn chunked crap with hairs in it for reinforcement... Once your braking system has achieved the factor of being able to apply as much/more braking power than is required to shut the engine down despite being given throttle, you cant achieve better performance with better brakes, you now need better tires and less mass to the car, the start of which is a set of good wheels that are light as rotational mass is the worst thing, also a lightened flywheel is a great thing, wheels and a flywheel with great brakes and great tires will give your vehicle an immensely superior performance(stop/go perf) compared to any other upgrade...

For starters these are brand new very expensive cars with veru good brakes. But also, the highway code isnt simply about the stopping ability if a car. In a real life situation you don't have a flag telling you when to brake, it happens unexpectedly. So the highway code considers the time that it will take for you to notice that you need to hit the brakes, the reaction time for you to actually hit the brakes and then the stopping ability of the car, which could be of any age from the late 80s to brand new

Can't the highway code take reaction time into account? Like, something happening, then you see it, then you need time to understand that you need to break, then you need to move your foot to the break pedal, THEN you start breaking? Not being 100% ready to start breaking at a certain line in the road? Seems like this test would have been conducted better if they would have been told before one of the specials that some time in the coming weeks, the producers will tell each of them at a time they don't know before, to suddenly break, and then measure how long it takes them to break? Just a thought.

what people fail to realise is that the stopping distance is done with one car travelling in one direction with no other vehicles around, if you were to factor in real life situation stopping distances are still relevant to a degree, for example if you are doing 60 mph on a single lane carrigeway and there is a car coming towards you on the wrong side of the road, you have a closing distance of 120mph, whats the stopping distance? i dont know but i bet it`ll be around about what the highway code says for 60mph for a single car
@meson1833 жыл бұрын
The braking test as conducted does not account for thinking time as many here have said, because the braking is pre-meditated (i.e. they start braking from a known point). However, the 240 foot distance they compare it to comes from the UK Highway Code which INCLUDES thinking time. If you exclude said reaction time, the distance they should be comparing it to is 180 feet; a distance all these vehicles still blitz anyway. That said, there is a school of thought that says that the "thinking time" in the Highway Code is actually underestimated and should be greater, so it kind of evens out a bit. Still good to know that at least the mechanics and engineering to shorten stopping distances is there. Drive safe, folks.

I gues highwaycode also includes reaction time(?)
@KevAlberta5 жыл бұрын
Yes most likely. Traveling at 110km/h you are going roughly 100 feet per second. A good human reaction in real time is roughly 1/3 to 1/2 second. Which would add about 33-50 more feet to their stopping distance.
@kaitlyngarner7405 жыл бұрын
It included reaction times back in the 70s. A citroen C3 from the mid 2000s can stop way short of the highway code stopping distance, with an average driver and even if they delay braking. Most cars on the road can safely go 90mph in a 70 zone and still have good enough brakes to stop in time if needed
@Oleg85ful5 жыл бұрын
These cars are fitted with high performance and expensive tyres but most of the cars in the UK are fitted with budget Chinese tyres which makes a huge difference in braking distance. Part worn tyres is still a profitable business in the UK.
@jokumukamikalie3 жыл бұрын
IDK the British Highway Code but even if the code factors in reaction distance, it's still amazingly overestimated.

@Corristo895 жыл бұрын
Good point. In this situation, they knew EXACTLY when to brake as hard as possible. How often does that happen in real life? Usually you don't know that a small child will suddenly run in front of your car. In those cases, there's the typical "Oh shit, what do I do?!?!" situation in which you keep moving at full speed until you start braking.
@mudgatebronn44385 жыл бұрын
@@Corristo89 exactly. When I studied for my licence my book said that it takes about 90 meters from that you see something on the road until the car has stopped if you drive in 100 kph. But something like 60-65 meters of that was the reaction time and only 25 meters (around 80 feet) is actual breaking time.
@mnoovurvi5 жыл бұрын
@@Corristo89 If you typically do "Oh shit what do I do" then you shouldn't have a driving license at all, because you are dangerous. If you know what you are doing, you slam on the brakes immediately as soon as you see child step on the road.

Ugh. I'm tired of the spiel that because brakes and tyres are better (and they are), speed limits should be increased. While stopping distance (once the brakes are applied) has gotten better, the average driver's reaction time hasn't. If anything, that's gotten worse due to the abundance of in-car technology distracting people from the road, not to mention all the people texting while driving. I'm not worried about a modern car's stopping ability, I'm worried about its driver's ability to *hit the brake pedal* in a timely fashion.
@Rear_Admiral5226 жыл бұрын
Look at the German Autobahn without a speed limit. It works out great with fewer accidents than in many other countries. The right training and well-built roads actually allow high velocities.
@MattyDienhoff6 жыл бұрын
Certainly, it can work if it's done right, but the Autobahn is no ordinary highway. It's specifically designed for very high speeds and just as importantly, it's maintained to a high standard. German drivers also have above-average training. Unfortunately, none of this is true in my country (Australia). Most of our country highways - where higher speed limits would be the most useful due to the vast distances - are one lane each way with no median strip. Not even remotely like the Autobahn. Even if we did have a highway like the Autobahn, Australian drivers as a whole have poor lane discipline and very little training in high speed driving. But I rarely see the "let's go faster" camp acknowledge these shortcomings or discuss any plans to address them *before* moving to increase speed limits.
