I'm a motorcyclist, head on collision survivor from a long time ago and could see it happening again to someone else. The odds weren't good. We just happened to be there on the golden Highway in the Hunter Valley. The highway patrol officer did his job well. The police have all the footage. Frightening experience. Should have called NSW Police on 000 at the start. We all made it home. All good. Hats off to the people who have to deal with this stuff every day.

Part of the bigger picture is how did things get this far? Everyone falls down sometimes. We need more support for mental health and AOD (alcohol and other drugs) problems in Australia. Best just look out for your mate. Love to know what other countries are doing about it? Make yourself aware of existing supports. Do it for a mate. Loren Reece how does honking a horn or calling 911 help? If they are caught in the act they only get a warning later when cops arrive at their house. Not only that using a phone while driving is dangerous, and honking the horn could startle the driver causing him to panic. I think the camera car driver did great. He extended the following distance incase of a wreck, and later put his own vehicle and life at risk to put his truck in the line of fire to prevent a crossover/head-on incident. Im sure he was aware of the cop behind him.

I didn't have much faith in the mobile coverage to work when you needed it and no not quite I had no idea there was a cop there until after the near miss with the ute. Totally unexpected. You have no idea of the feeling of relief on seeing the patrol car parked there. I did all I could to attract his attention waving and pointing and then moved over for him to pass and chase the ute. By the way it's 000 here in Australia

For drinking alcohol when driving the book gets thrown at you, pretty much same with drugs. Mental health services for drug addicts on a scale from 1-10 is about a 3. One can get busted with heroin and let out of jail the next day to steal some more. Rehab facilities need to be affordable and plentiful with the worldwide opioid flood. Some rehab facilities that trade on Wall St. also supply opioids to the public. 1500 per day for re hab with those select outfits. 500 per day rehab for most. Adds up. Work camps with professionals running them would cut costs. Growth industry. Do not drink and drive folks.

Sadly there was an unrelated triple fatality at the same location on the golden highway several months after this event. It’s the glitch where the two files join in the middle of this video.

Had a similar scenario many years ago, called the cops and even told them i was doing 140km/hr just to keep up with the moron as i was high beaming everyone to be aware something going on. Cops commended me for doing it.........and they got him. Fkd part is these days they would have taken my license too.

Forget the policelink number (131444).....that is a 000 job...! The policelink number is for reporting a loud party, shop lifting or stealing type of offences, persons acting suspiciously...etc.(non urgent jobs) and yes, that would include minor traffic offences....doing burnouts hearing a car driving fast around the neighborhood, overtaking in a couple of dangerous areas or just plain silly driving.....just get the vehicles rego number and call 131444. However, if he was able to drive even a metre further, he would have had a serious crash. If you called that 131 number, you would have been put on hold till there was an available operator which can take more than 5-10mins at times. That's just to long to wait with circumstances you were in. If its a life or death situation, (which this one obviously was) CALL 000 ....!!! 🚔

Sir Peabody Yes you’re probably right and I did slow down wondering what to do. I had limited faith in technology to work when you needed it to so initially decided against it. Thought it would all be over too quickly for that. For all I know somebody may have already called them as the last town is half an hour back.

You are out of your mind even going near a drunk driver at those speeds. He is driving unpredictable and he could have done anything as you approached the vehicle and you put yourself and your passenger in danger. I have been in this exact situation 2 times before, i kept my distance and called the police each time, also both times they wrecked before the cops could intervene and I was at a safe distance behind. I just stayed around to give a statement to police.

Hi Mike I can see your point and it caused me no end of grief. The feeling at first is shear terror and the urge to run in the opposite direction. At some point it changes and becomes an overwhelming reaction to do something.

Great job Mark Reedman all around . Nice Video . The music , well It calmed me down ! I was Trying to adjust to your side of the road and all things foreign to our driving setting . As far as what other countries do ? The Police are now injecting People who Overdose ? Everybody knows Heroin is Bad There was a Movie called the French Connection Decades ago ,Remember . Drunk Driving well they made some headway there Because it was a Legal product sold in stores . Wait I am wrong sorry ,we have a Judge who was Nailed for DUI 2 years ago that is still getting paid as a Judge ? The Highway patrolman driving the Fire Chiefs Car has my Thanks for Ending the Hazard in your Video . The Police over here are Being Shot just because they are Police because S J Warriors have been rioting for 2 years Blaming Police for every thing . And a lot of States are Making Pot Legal . Hi Mark Sounds like a different set of problems over there in some areas more extreme than ours. New solutions are needed all the time in continuously evolving societies. Everyone has their own reason for using AOD. Everyone has their own story. I know this was happening here at a time when the wheels fell off our local mining industry causing large job losses and a large downturn in the local economy placing untold stresses and suffering on individuals and families. These were factors out of our control and may have had an impact. Have a good day. Thank you for commenting.

I knew that if I pulled in behind the patrol car I could’ve reignited a potentially dangerous situation. The situation was over. I knew the patrol car had the capability to record my number plate for their reference later.

Texters is pretty idiotic to include in that statement. Texting does not change your judgement or ability to see straight. While I agree its a distraction, lets be realistic here. A drunk person cant just put their beer down and become sober while driving. A phone can be put down or avoided. FYI Cops have onboard computers that are worse than texting, this has been covered in the past.

Hi Ben yes it is the Golden Hwy and going past the heavy vehicle inspection area for RMS and ended around the corner and down the road heading north to Jerry"s Plains.

He could've been drunk or under the influence of drugs. But it's also possible that he was suffering a medical emergency or a mental breakdown. Who knows? Either way, I'm glad no one was hurt and I hope the driver gets the help he or she needs.

I would have laid on my horn to shake that guy awake or out of his drunken stupor. Why just video him but not try to do anything about his behavior. He could have driven into incoming traffic and killed someone. I would have tried to make him aware of his behavior.
