Motorways are the transport arteries on which Britain depends. Through bad weather, accidents and repairs, it’s a constant battle to keep them moving. This series reveals the secret life of one of the UK’s busiest - the M6
From the travellers who rely on it to the teams that work along it, the series features surprising stories and characters normally hidden from view. The repairmen who risk their lives as huge, fast and unpredictable vehicles thunder past, the irate local residents whose peace is disturbed by another set of night works and the police who mop up when things go wrong.
The Motorway: Life In The Fast Lane provides a unique insight into the vast and fascinating life of UK's busiest M6.

Did that guy actually say “I’ve never had a speeding ticket” and then follow it up with “I never go over 100” - that’s 30mph over the speed limit so if you’ve never had a ticket then you absolutely should have done.

@@morganjoyce8712 Yes, That's basically what I just said. Read my comment again. I know exactly what both terms mean, and I was explaining why he merely called it overtaking. In short conversation, it's simply easier to call both of them 'overtaking' because the long and short of it is, they've gone past someone else. In technicality, though, that is undertaking.

I can’t believe those lorries pretty much smashing into the cones. They will have completely ignored the X on the lane guidance telling them the lane is closed and then be completely oblivious to what is ahead of them in not seeing the cones until they almost hit them. Every single one of them should have been sent a ticket or be arrested for dangerous driving. No Lorry driver should be on the road like that, as they’re driving a huge thing that could wipe out families.

@Lady Jupiter I saw an rtc where I was first on the scene back in the mid 80's opposite my security post, the passenger had a gash from his knee to historic groin that had sliced through his thigh to his none, the force of the impact rapped the radiator round then engine and tilted a garage forecourt sign post overview but some 20 degrees, drunk driver I am guessing done a runner and left their passenger, fortunately there was a fire station right next door to the site I was patrolling otherwise I would have needed to go to the nearest phone box, even then it took some time to get their attention but they will have been better equipped than me to deal with it, I did chase it up the following day and he survived, I don't know what happened to the driver. Remembering for a long time, I would say they will never forget it I never have, and as the incident was 33-34 years ago I 56 in two months.

I spent 3 years in Europe and I must say one thing I was impressed with was the state of the roads. Potholes repaired quickly, etc. Here in the US where I live we had a snow storm, which melted into the roads, then froze again, causing A LOT of huge potholes on regular and freeway roads. Numerous cars received flat tires or other damage, many wrecks caused by them. Yet it still took months and months to get them fixed, and even then it was a poor job that doesn't last long.. Now they are experimenting with a road surface that absorbs water and funnels it off to the side.

I think today’s society is always in such a rush and needs to slow down!!!!!! I didn’t realize see this until 5 yrs ago when I became disabled. I noticed people risk there lives and others to get to there destination only a couple minutes earlier!!!!! For God’s sake people give yourself a few extra minutes so you don’t have to go 80 or 90 in a 70mph zone or 60-65 in a 55mph zone!!!! The more people that are in a hurry the greater chance of something bad happening!!!! It’s not an accident if you run someone off the road because you’re in a dang hurry. Enjoy your drive and ride and slow down!!!! Give yourself 5-15 minutes extra so you don’t have to act like a fool to get somewhere in time!!!! It’s not worth the risk!!!!!!

I actually shouldn’t say that I couldn’t even imagine the horrors of getting into an accident with a car full of children, but that means sewage is definitely up there

I used to live in Manchester. I also lived and worked in Germany. When l used to visit my mother in Manchester,l dreaded the road journey....especially on the M1.l considered the drivers in the UK really bad.A total lack of safety and disrespectful of other people on the road.Thank god l no longer live there.

I wanna say about the first think that when a truck had pull over on lane one I think and when almost 2 other trucks did hit it them at least one did hit the cones so the problem was of workers they should did like much more space from the truck closing the lane like at least 3 to 5 more meters and it would be much safer for the workers and the driver who was waiting for the help to arrive and other drivers who did drove by them cuz they would notice before that the lane it’s closed and u have to change in other lane and there it’s a less possibility that someone would hit them that’s I think a kinda big mistake what they could avoid if they did at least 3 more meters

Wow in the US our highways are not monitored with the exception of an occasional cop checking for speeding. Our roads are definitely not maintained anywhere close to how the Brits do it.

one thing about driving there is you were never very far from a phone even before mobile phones. They had emergency phones on the motorway from the start, spaced every mile, and unlike equivalent systems in the US they cover all areas, urban and rural, universally, and they've continued to be maintained even in today's mobile phone dominated era.

Interesting how much CCTV there's on your motorways. Cameras are on the German highways as well, but not that much. They are usually on highways which are in and around larger cities and at few spots in between, but not the the extend that the entire stretch is covered. The highway maintenance authority doesn't partol the highways to detect e.g. accidents or other obstacles. And we don't shut down all lanes for s aimple pothole repair during the day ... if sth is done during the day, one or two lanes are kept open

I think they only shut the Mway down for serious potholes that can cause an accident, better 10 mins closure then, than 4+ hours later in the day....
