Im new to the series (started with gou cause I heard it was a remake : ) hah.) But does a lot of the fandom hate Satoko because of Gou?? I feel really, really sorry for her that the one person in her life she'd do anything for repeatedly chose to abandon her no matter what she tried to do to get her to stay, especially since she has attachment issues already and Rika should know that but she still ditched her best friend since childhood for a bunch of fake ass groupie bitches. She was literally driven insane and was so desperate to not be abandoned. Imagine trusting your best friend and doing what you absolutely fucking hate for like 6-7 (?) years in a row just to have her chose fake elitist bitches over you and then try unrelenting to try to get her to value just value the friendship the same way you do... I'm not saying Satoko is faultless, because clearly she's fucked up so many ways and her attachment to Rika is so toxic she'll willingly torture everyone across countless timelines (including herself and also Rika) just have Rika stay in Hinamizawa. But also, Rika is a shitty, selfish person as well, and on top of that shes fake af. I suppose I'm just biased because people who go so far to try to "fit in" and abandon the friend who has had your back since day 0 is just so revolting. Ideally, Satoko should have just given up on Rika and dropped out of St. Lucias and join up with the rest of the gang. If Rika wants out despite everything shes been through with everyone accumulated through timelines, then she's just not very loyal or sensitmental person. In the end, I think the reason why Higurashi is so good is because the characters have their cute, likeable quirks but at the same time are also horrible, fucked up, broken people. Although I should catch up with all the content before I form a more comprehensive opinion, I like Rika the least out of the main 4 by FAR

Original Higurashi: Shallow people hated her for being annoying but completely ignore that she was an orphan living with an extremely abusive (propably pedophile) uncle and her beloved brother was missed under mysterious circumstances. Higurashi Gou: People hate her because she is extremely out of character. But Satoko was NEVER fully sane *!* She had mental health issues even without the syndrome. She accused her step father of child abuse only to get rid of him and became extremely clingy towards her brother (result of the real abuse from her uncle and aunt). Satoko always had strong abandonment issues (after her poor brother disappeared) and became obsessed with Rika (who supported her when the whole village hated her). Also people should not forget that Gou Satoko never learned a lesson.

I think this “nice to meet you” isn’t meant to be used as an introduction. It’s sarcasm emplying “now you know what I’m capable of. Don’t mess with me, okay?” That’s how I took this “nice to meet you”. A very blunt punchline.

I think we're also forgetting another nuance here, which is that this is Rika's first direct interaction with Satoko in the world of Rei. So in a sense, it's kinda half-and-half "nice to meet you" & "understood?". I understand why most Japanese would prefer the latter though.
