Where you’re reading a TIP about abuse statistics, and then sexual abuse stats come in the screen along with a sprite of satoko along with that scare cord covered me in more goosebumps than at any other moment in my life and made me feel such an intense horror and revulsion. The setup and execution of that “scene” sells the whole arc for me. Ditto for Keiichis inner monologue as he pursues Teppei and the fallout afterwards when he runs into someone unexpected. 👨‍🍳 💋 The anime suffers immensely by not having characters inner monologues.

I started this VN for horror mistery and got greeted by middle schoolers playing hide and seek which is very intense for no reason

Ryukishi07 is more than just a doujin (as in "indie") author, one of the things I love is the post-game discussion on the answer arcs for Higurashi, and those can touch real world issues. Also it's pretty much implied that he, out of millions of Japanese people in this world, recognizes the extent war crimes that Imperial Japan did in WW2, not blatantly but in a roundabout-implied way in Chapter 2 (the part where Shion's grandpa "accidentally" sells rations that turn out to be made of human flesh after the war to the poverty stricken post war Japanese people).

I am glad that I downloaded Chapter 1 of Higurashi when they released it for free during the pandemic. I have yet to read/play it, with other games still on my to-play list (most notably Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil, Sonic Frontiers, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga), but after watching this video, I am absolutely going to give the visual novel a shot after this college semester is over.

I compelely agree that the anime provides a warped perspective on the events. I REALLY enjoyed the first Onikakushi-hen arc of the oringial 2009 from studio Deen, because it felt like they ACTUALLY took time to slowly build up the suspense and horror over multiple episodes and reel you in. As far as the other arcs go, Gou and Sotsu felt really rushed and most characters felt like they had no impact in the story whatsoever. I really didn't like the whole Satako villain arc twords the end, I found it getting boring really quickly and they could have done so much more with this great cast of characters. Great video! :)

In regards to the difference in tone between the VN and anime; I honestly thought it was smarter to make the changes they did. Chapter 1, you really trust Keiichi's perspective because you're not given any reason to doubt it. Even the smallest hint to the unreliable narrator in the anime could break the chapter's illusion. The VN has way more wiggle room, because you're directly fed all of Keiichi's thoughts, the reader can be led down a path of paranoia much like the character they're following. The doubt of events is there, but the chapter does a great job of using that to push you into the same headspace as Keiichi only to pull the rug from you later. At least that's what I think, it's a decent adaptation into anime.

I think that the Keen adaptation opening the way it did still manages to be the most shocking cold open in media in a long-form series. As a stand alone work, Higurashi is an awesome and well-directed anime. As an adaptation, it's completely lacking in every single way. It's the only adaption I can easily say that about.

I have finished reading main 8 chapters of higurashi + saikoroshi and it was for sure the best story I've ever experienced. Absolutely insane. Characters feel like an actuall people with actual stories that will totally destroy you once you get to know them. Everyone is so lovable. Anyway, Umineko time now :3

I love Higurashi so much. It’s one of my favorite VN and i like the original anime. Some parts of Gou are enjoyable but it did fall apart but i like it more than a lot of others lmao. Kenji Kawai is incredibly underrated. Other rarely spoken of scores by the man are the live-action Ring movies and Gundam 00. Though my absolute favorite score of his is Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. ... and yes, console sprites are best sprites. Good taste fren.

Huh, I feel the opposite towards Umineko - didn’t care for answer arcs, only read them out of emotional investment. The question arcs are top notch, though. Also, original sprites are part of the charm in both games and must be mandatory!

I appreciate it when videos like this are made, because it reminds me to never touch this series or Corpse Party with a 10-foot pole. Accidentally watching clips on KZfaq from the anime adaptations when I was in high school have left me scarred and I can’t push myself to check them out.

Chapter 3, 6, and 7 were my favorite of the VN. Chapter 8 is really good, but the end felt like it was rushed to it's conclusion to end it. I was hoping to spend more time with these characters after the festival as an epilogue. Edit: I've now played "The Worst Option" and that's a perfect conclusion. I've already accepted I'm in the minority here it seems, but I love the details and expressiveness of the mangagamer sprites.

Yes, you count the OVAs. IMO the OVAs do a DECENT job of bringing back ideas that were cut from the VN to complete the story better.

I have weird feelings about Higurashi. I watched the anime years ago and I loved the first season, but at some point during the second all of my investment dried and I stopped caring about what was going on. I had never played a VN before but after finishing Umineko, it became my favorite game of all time, and after I finish playing Umineko (yes, I'm playing it twice back to back), I intend to go back and revisit Higurashi as well.

I love higurashi. it helped me through dark phase of my life. i realy love that story and mystery around them. i miss this characters

i appreciate the recommendation; it took me an hour and a half to get through what's covered in the first half of the first episode, there's already way more depth to the writing (although it is way pervier, didn't expect Mion and Keichi to discuss his dick right from the beginning)
