Yep. I looked up his rating history and it seems the last time he was #2 in the world was way back in 2015. It must be unheard of to take a hiatus that long to come back as world #2.

He's currently world #2 in live rankings. Top 5 in history? Not a chance. Only in your uniformed mind a non world champion could be #2 in history. Not even the greats like Kerees, Korchnoi, and Bronstein are considered top 5 in history. Yet those are chess giants universally respected.
@MrSupernova111
@MrSupernova111 Жыл бұрын
@@hattherola7330 . That might be true but if your criteria for all time greats is a popularity contest no one before Fischer would be in the top 5. People like Morphy, Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, and Botvinnik would get buried and forgotten in chess history. Its nice that Hikaru popularizes chess but decades from now he will be remembered for his contributions and achievements OTB just like the masters before him - not for his popularity.
@paulr3934
@paulr3934 Жыл бұрын
@@MrSupernova111 I you're going too far the other way. He's not universally loved, or an all-time top 5... but he certainly universally resepcted over the board. He's 10th strongest player of all time, a contender for strongest blitz-player of all time, will go down in history as one of the most influential and transformative players, and apparently is getting a second wind in his mid 30s, with one of his strongest tournement wins to date... He's absolutely universally respected.

Its big but chess itself is a boring sport for a causal viewer. Lets say something like football, a casual player can just follow the ball and see whos kicking it at the back of the net. Chess isnt like that. You need to be Atleast 1000 rated to even follow what the commentators are saying and even higher rated to see the ideas yourself. But its all good, Hikaru has alot of fans who is congratulating him on his youtube,kick,twitch and I think hes happy with that
