Memorising chess games is (very) different though. Because you have legal moves, logical moves, known theory and remembering what lines were played. It's very different from memorising a string of numbers with a reasonable max length of like 64 pro level chess moves. I think the average amount of moves in chess games is actually around ~38-40 or so, which really isn't too bad. By the time you can dream the coordinate system of a chess board, it'll become pretty easy to memorise games. Of course, if your memory sucks, you will have to train it.

@@socketzrapz5039 It's because he remembers a lot of it by 'I played this opening, with this and this variation and the odd moves by my opponent were move 10, 13 and 33 for example. He doesn't memorize a string of just chess notations. At least, that's my guess. For him it is more like a soccer game and remembering the player set up, the strategy of a high press and the scoring chances resulted from that. I can memorize hours of classical guitar music, but I don't remember the music note notations. I remember the music more like a story and an adventure for my fingerpicking with a certain road to travel. The human memory can be very impressive if you understand how to get the most out of it. The rest is just decades of pure memory training.

@Utsav Joshi Memorizing the coordinates board has a lot to do with playing a lot of chess and being conscious about the coordinates. To the untrained player it will appear like magic, but it is actually not that hard.

Got curious and did all 8 tests on the website. Scored 90+ percentile for 3 of the memory tests, yet didn't even make it to 16% for reaction time and aim trainer (basically reaction time with a target). It's quite funny that from the tests I learn more about other people who take them than myself ......

I used a hybrid of hikaru's method...of whatever he is saying lol. I noticed that, yes, the pattern of the chimp test always matches the 8x8 dimensions of a chess board. so what I did was more abstract. The idea is still simple tho, start with an image of the board empty in your mind, then, all of the numbered tiles must signify moves from chess pieces. You would have to try your best to string together connecting numbers (1,2,3,4) with one piece that could fill in all those possible moves. To make things easier I allowed the placement of any piece in chess, even variant pieces, wherever it needed to be. I used variant pieces to reduce the number of new pieces I had to introduce. Heres an example. if I had a sequence of 2 1 3. And lets say "1" was the square e2 Start the sequence by imagining a queen placed on e2 as the first move, and jumping from e2-->d3-->-->f1 I got to 22...a huge improvement from my score before, where I tried memorizing the lines my cursor should travel. Hikaru was onto something here, and i'm only 1000 elo online. I'm only saying here, that if you put 1 hour thirty into this like I did, you can do it too. I swear this is good visualization and memory training. In just one night I learned to memorize up to 22 move sequences.

@@JasonSal no he's a genius. He understands a concept that alot of geniuses have to learn how to use and alot of common people seem to have but don't use it well at least generally. It's that chess ability. It seems that the more simple your perspective of the world is the easier it is for you to be able to manipulate certain objects in a given space given enough rules that bound that space. For example, the simsons. We can all agree that the simsons is genius. How is it possible to predict future events? Well given enough information about how certain people function you can create an alternate reality that could play as a metaphor to objective reality at some point you may end up coming up with accurate predictions. This concept can be generalized to everything, applied to everything, it's a brilliant concept, and it's even more effective concept the more information you understand about the world around you and what your place is in it all. He's capable of generalizing that chess ability within the chess domain, now imagine generalizing this ability to objective reality and the predictions you will be capable of. If you believe IQ is everything you're horrifically mistaken. He's most definitely a genius at chess and perhaps IQ can't elucidate how smart he really is.
