Competitors in any sport do whatever they can to achieve the most points with what the rules allow them. It's not the players' fault, drawing in chess pays off. If anything I'd blame the rules instead.

If Magnus really serious about getting to 2900, there is no way he is going to give up the opportunity to get multiple games in against a high rated super GM that he knows he can destroy. It’s basically free elo for Magnus. I get that he doesn’t want to play Nepo again after an underwhelming matchup in WCC but he doesn’t have the luxury of not playing because he is bored if he wants to get 2900. That being said, I still wouldn’t be surprised if Magnus doesn’t play in the WCC.

Second of all if he wanted to make a draw at least he could have waited the other matchups...for example ding was completely crushed so it means that he could have least tried to win to gain even more. Then if he saw that he couldn't win a draw was very well the solution. The problem with his decision is the very quick draw that, as I said, removes every chance he had to win the tournament (which is the most important thing) and furthermore it was too fast...why don't try something (not saying to throw everything at his opponent, but at least try something. Maybe Ian would have blundered or missed something...you ever know). So yeah it was a really bad decision

Unfortunately the format of the Candidates basically insists that the goal is not to lose vs fighting for wins. Especially if you're in the lead and in this case also tied for second given the narrative of Magnus. A draw ensures you at least hold position. Do I like it? No. Is it a valid strategy? Yes. But that's due to the format more than the players which is why we get some pretty boring games. Rapport is an exception, even Ali for that matter even though it's not paying off for them

Hard disagree. Nakamura knows he MUST win this game to have a shot of winning the tournament considering the leaderboards. It was disgusting that he'd play for an obvious draw knowing that. The problem is that the emphasis on draws is simply in the nature of chess itself. You can outplay your opponent by a non-trivial amount and still lose. Since going for the win often - as seen in the Candidates - makes it more likely you will lose, taking too many risks is simply objectively bad chess.

The problem I have with forcing draws is that imagine this was football and let's say it's brackets right now with 4 teams in each bracket, single round robin top 2 qualify to the elimination rounds. Imagine team A beat C and draw with D, team B beat D and draw with C so currently it's 4/4/1/1 and tie breakers will be first determined by goals So if A beat B or B beat A they gurantee first place but the other is now at risk of elimination due to tie breakers depending on what happens in C vs D, however both A and B would be happy with a draw as that ensures both teams qualify no matter what happens in C vs D. If team A and B played the 'I am not touching the ball variation' of football - by kind of looking at what the other team does and standing back accordingly, they'll sit around for 90m and both qualify. This is what happened here and happens very often in chess, you don't need to try your best if your opponent see what you do and 'agrees to a draw' provided they don't say anything out loud. And the issue is that they harm the chances of others in the tournament, in our case both group C and D get cheated out of their winning chances, in Hikaru's case - maybe he gets lucky and wins and maybe Ding wins his match - all of a sudden Ding might win the tournament, so by simply instantly going for the draw Ian robbed Ding's chances. Now if you saw a football game with the no touching the ball variation you'd say 'this is bad sportmanship - both teams need to be disqualified' and you'd be right - but a draw makes most sense to them so why are you mad at them and not at Ian? I think if chess was always played for a win it would be much more exciting and so imagine a point system where both draw and loss count as 0 and a win is 1 point, now you have nothing to gain by drawing the game (3-1 still gains something so I like it less) - so everyone always go for a win because otherwise no points and you can't 'lock opponents out of their winning odds' unless this is a 1 v 1 finale - where yes after winning once you can try to force draws constantly - you just can't ever do it safely in a stage where mulitple participants still exist because every win you don't get can close a gap.
@georgistoykov956

In chess, the white pieces have a slight advantage and at this level, black normally plays for a draw because it is too risky to go for a win. If A is a better team than B, B will normally play for a draw. Football is a much more unpredictable sport and actually, unlike chess, most of the matches are won or lost because there exist much more prerequisites for mistakes. I get your point and sure it will be more interesting if its win or loss but that's just the way chess is played and it makes sense. And, by the way, there are Armageddon matches.
@nathanenoughalready3518
@nathanenoughalready3518 2 жыл бұрын
I get what you’re saying, but with that system the only differentiation between a loss and a draw is preventing your opponent from getting a point (and rating, but that doesn’t affect the ongoing tournament). What if your opponent is in last place and you’re playing with black? Losing would have no consequences and you could just resign immediately or trade down and lose fast on purpose to give yourself an extra rest day. I’m not saying this is necessarily just a flaw with your idea; at its core, Chess is flawed at the top level and no format will fix every issue. Doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyable despite its shortcomings, but I’ve noticed that many other similar turn based games work much better at a professional level because of draws being either quite rare (Shogi) or literally impossible (Go). In any case, I don’t blame any of the players for their choices; they’re playing within the rules of FIDE and they have every right to until FIDE decides to change the rules. Alireza is clearly stressed and feeling down on himself (he’s 19 and it’s his first candidates, people need to give the guy a break, he didn’t intentionally lose to Ian), Hikaru might have evaluated that playing for second place at this point is his best shot at playing for the championship, and Ian almost guarantees himself the win if he goes for free draws
@blueplayer6197
@blueplayer6197 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgistoykov956 I am not saying 'let's force someone to always be black' you are right there's an advantage. But that's why we play games on both colors and white is the one that can push to a quick draw or prevent it, even if you somehow believe that you can never win as black - black can fight for a draw but we want to give white an incentive to win - and at the human level this should give black much greater winning chances than we currently see because trying to win aggressively can hurt your position. Can white not still force a draw? he could - but he'll get what he'd get for losing so you aren't likely to allow black to do it, and black can't force a draw white doesn't want. It wasn't Hikaru forcing a draw here, Ian could have said no to the line whenever he wanted and if you told Ian - listen a draw is 0 for you just like a loss, what would Ian gain doing that? He'll gain Hikaru not gaining points but Ding is the much bigger issue so I think Ian would play ball in a 'all or nothing' point system. I don't get your point about armageddon, it exists but outside of classical - in rapid, let alone blitz you don't see this defensive behavior since there isn't that long to think everything through - and you absolutely can play for a win as black on rapid and blitz at any level - the main issue most people seem to have is classical and even though 'it's how it's played' - a change can be very positive.
