Hiking 100 Miles Alone Across Utah - Uinta Highline Trail

The coolest trail I've ever done under 100 miles. Finishing off the summer I got to hike the Uinta Highline Trail, an incredible route that hardly ever dips below 9,000 feet in elevation. Traversing ridge lines, large expanses of lowland bogs, passing seemingly hundreds of lakes full of trout, and trespassing on moose territory.
I think for the future if I were to do it again there is a lot of potential for a really amazing high route, avoiding going down into the valleys unless to camp, and just staying on the ridges and peaks the entire way.
Absolutely I highly recommend this trail to anyone. It's not the hardest thing, but with potential to change it up to your liking and increase the difficulty if you would want with more off trail travel and route finding. Or simply enjoy the beauty like I did. The shorter over all distance of it makes it the perfect trail if you only have a few days while still retaining that incredible feeling of a longer thru hike and adventure.

Many have been struck by lightning when taking shelter under ponderosa pines here in Arizona. The lightning is attracted to the pine trees...Beautiful area!!

Lightening strikes are amazingly rare. People have been struck on all manner of terrain yet few seem to agree what is the best prevention. The latest seems to be to squat in the open with your feet close together. It would seem that in a storm, like in life, you are just playing the odds.

I was mostly under them to stay dry, the storms all were passing very quickly so didn't feel a need to go back down, but also didn't want to go up up up and over!

It finally comes to me - the way to describe how I feel when I watch one of your videos. There are certain kind of films where you go on a journey of growth or thought with the main character. At the end, the character has some deep insight, usually in a voice-over as the credits roll. And, as you walk out of the theater, you realize you've somehow grown or changed too. Your videos always leave me with that same fuzzy-around-the-edge feeling that a deep insight has been shared.

I did that in August. I didn’t see a soul for the first two days until I got to Leady. Once I got past Anderson Pass/Kings Peak I was once again alone. Just saw two people until I got over Rocky Sea Pass.

That was the one pass that I was worried about. I kept getting mixed reports on whether or not there was snow on the pass. There was but not much and it was not too hard to circumnavigate. What I found more concerning was how soft the ground was around that snow. Some of it started to give away as I walked it. I just kept telling myself, “Just keep moving.” There was also the gaps in tread that were also concerning. The other pass that I didn’t anticipate being a concern was the one above Dead Man Lake. You can see the band of snow early on in this video. I happened to walk the same way he did. When I got to the snow I decided to go vertical instead of going through the snow. That was some scary crap. A few times gravity grabbed my pack when I leaned too far back. After that happened I decided to just hug the mountain until I was at the top. Near the top I grabbed onto a boulder about the size of my torso to pull myself up and it moved. Again, with all the snow this past year, the ground was pretty soft.

My dad was military and because of that I lived in Utah for my childhood and hiked all over the place now since I can’t do things I use to do I can still watch on KZfaq and remanence.

I love the uintas. I lived by those mountains for a few years. I miss it when I get that itch to get out in nature, now that I live in a flat sprawling metroplex.

One of the interesting things about the Uintas is that they are an east to west mountain range. I Love the Uintas. I live just down the road in Park City and hiked that same trail. Back in the day (20 years ago) when packs and gear were heavy, I attempted a solo yo-yo of the trail and failed miserably. I think I had like 3 or 4 weeks of food in my pack. Since then I have done it but still remember my first try. Thanks for the great video!

Mount Olympus is a great trail. I'm going to have to try that route next hiking season. People don't expect it but there are many great trails around Salt Lake valley. Glade you got to hike some. I'm surprised that anyone outside of Utah knows about the Uinta Highline, but I've run onto hikers from all over the world while on it. I've traveled a lot for work and most peoples perception of Utah is so distorted it's funny. It has its quirks but Salt Lake valley is pretty much like any other city in the U.S.

I didn't have much time to plan, but in the end it was fun to see how I would handle the unexpected. Sometimes things don't go to plan! A good exercise I probably wouldn't recommend for a 100 mile hike haha

I love the idea of not making too many plans by just letting the journey unfold & surprise. Maybe there'll be a trend to ditch GPX/GPS & just use map, compass, judgement & experience? Surely a purer experience?... Not too sure about that though! Great video Jupiter & thanks for sharing.

Excellent video man! The Uinta Highline Trail is definitely on my list of hikes to do. Perhaps next year? I'm thinking on heading down to do the Bartram in a few weeks to make that my end of fall hike. It's a short one like the Uinta. Thanks for posting up another great video

@@JupiterHikes I don't have a lot of info on it, but it's about 110 miles long, decent water the whole time, goes through Franklin around the halfway point, there's an old timey school buss in the woods, some Chatooga River, some water falls, some views, Wayah Bald, Cheoah Bald, and hopefully some/still some sweet leaf colors in a week or so... and it's relatively close.

Little pro tip from a utah native.... wear LEATHER boots that reach at least up to your calfs we DO have rattlesnakes here and if you go out there in ankle shoes with no protection... you rollin dice is all you doin.

You know what, I currently attend university in southern utah rn. I have about two years left and I plan on potentially (hopefully) thru-hiking the PCT once I graduate. I definitely will end up doing some practice thru-hikes on this trail and elsewhere in Utah as well. Also planning on doing a practice thru-hike of the Superior Hiking Trail (310 miles) which is the closest thru-hike to where I grew up my entire life in Minnesota before heading off to university. ... Didn't know this trail existed, but I'll definitely go give it a try. So thank you for that.
