I was able to drag some friends along on an early fall hike to Tam McArthur Rim and the base of Broken Top. The willows at ice cold Three Creeks Lake were a magnificent gold, however the sun was out and it seemed like summer had not yet left. Big shoutout to my friend Clayton for producing the excellent track Deep Mind for me to use in the video!
THIS HIKE
The round trip out and back trail to Tam McArthur Rim is 5.2 miles, 1300 ft. of elevation gain and provides plenty spectacular views. If the snow is melted and you've got more energy in the reserve make it an 11 mile, 2200 ft. of gain round trip day by going to the base of Broken Top. You'll not only get up close and personal with this craggy volcano, but you'll see the silty waters of No Name Lake, the ever receding Bend glacier and all Three Sisters. Be sure to stay on trail and use durable surfaces as you rise in elevation to protect the delicate alpine plants.
This trail is one of many in the Three Sisters Wilderness which requires a day use or overnight permit if you visit between memorial day and the last Friday in September. Be sure to check the USFS website for current conditions before attempting this hike: www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/desch...
