In my latest hiking news roundup for November 2023 on the HikingGuy channel, I shared several important updates and useful insights that could benefit the hiking community. This video covered a variety of topics, providing tips and significant news affecting hikers nationwide.
One of the notable updates I discussed came from Recreation.gov, which has introduced a new feature for alerting campers to available spots at campgrounds. This functionality, previously available only through third-party services, has now been integrated directly into the Recreation.gov platform. I hope this feature will eventually extend to trail permits and timed park entries, which would greatly streamline the booking process for many outdoor enthusiasts.
I also touched on the challenges and ongoing debates surrounding timed entries at national parks like Rocky Mountain and Yosemite. This system aims to reduce overcrowding, but it has elicited mixed reactions, particularly concerning access and convenience for park visitors. In addition, I shared an incident about a hiker who relied on Google Maps for trail guidance and ended up needing rescue-a stark reminder of the importance of using reliable and accurate trail maps. Unlike Google Maps, platforms like AllTrails and Gaia GPS use data from Open Street Map, which tends to be more reliable for trail information.
Furthermore, I highlighted legislative efforts like the MVP Act, aimed at improving outdoor access for military families, and shared personal stories and contributions from the hiking community. This included a heartwarming mention of a 92-year-old completing a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike, proving it’s never too late to embrace an adventure.
For those interested in supporting my channel, I suggested using affiliate links for Amazon and REI, especially during sales. This approach allows me to fund more content without resorting to direct advertising, helping to keep my hiking guides and gear reviews unbiased and informative. My goal is to help viewers enjoy and safely explore the great outdoors, equipped with the best possible information.

Same! It’s a nice little update and gives us the opportunity to hear what’s going on that may not make it our way as quickly. For instance I had no idea someone recently died at Whit. . I watch the news and never heard a thing. That’s nice to know because now if I go there I can pay respect to a fallen hiker/adventurist. I do like this format, it fits well :)

Back when I used to guide I'd occasionally do group hikes. Good idea though maybe I can figure out something. Maybe hang a campground or something so it's not too disruptive. Will give it some thought.

Dan made one mistake, Eric made another, and the Park Service may have made a third. Dan only paid attention to calories; not nutrition. He didn't eat enough protein, which is the macronutrient that we need in greatest quantity every day, especially when working hard. Meat may be heavy, but you need plenty of it. Eric's mistake was not setting an easy pace for his flat-lander buddy. Day one was 13 miles with a mile of descent. No problem for Arizona-raised Eric, but Dan was beaten up. They should have taken a rest day before attempting the climb out. Or they could have stopped or retreated when they ran into snowshoe conditions. They tried too hard to keep up an overly-aggressive pace with an already beaten up team member. The trail up is hard enough in good weather. Snowshoes were just too much for poor Dan, who was already suffering from a type of malnutrition as well as fatigue. The Park Service keeps a tight schedule on permits and trip plans, which may have been part of the reason that Eric tried to stick to the planned schedule. That's a problem because conditions during the trip were different than expected. The Park Service should make it clear to all visitors that they would rather see someone hike out a day late rather than have to be carried out.

Contributed, because I rely so much on your website, and videos. Hiked Brown Mountain Dam yesterday (one of my favorites). Your directions saved me a mile hike on a boring road, plus there was much more access to parking. The other thing I appreciate is that if a hike is only for advanced hikers, or downright unsafe in certain conditions (Baldy in snowy or icy conditions, for example, or the Cactus to Clouds trail in summer) you make sure to let your viewers know. Many influencers and KZfaqrs will tell you that a hike is difficult, but they make it look easy (because they are very advanced in their hiking skills), and leave the viewer with the impression “how difficult could it be, really?”

Ah thank you so much, and yea, when I first started doing guides, safety was the main concern. I wouldn't want to recommend or direct someone if it could get them into trouble. So I try to be sober and transparent about risks. Overall the idea is that the guides give you all the info you know to hike safely. Glad the guides have been helpful for you and again, a big big thank you.

Yes, regards altitude sickness. Rule number one assume it’s altitude sickness not something else. Rule number two do not forget rule number one. It’s amazing how many people continue onward even though they have the signs of early altitude sickness it’s completely preventable if you stop at that point and go down to 500 feet or more Things complicated are not eating any food and becoming dehydrated

Sponsorship video idea: Try doing interview segments with outfitters, trail guides and other companies that may recommend trip packages they are selling. Not sure what the rates would be, but a sponsored interview video for an outfitter in Alaska or Hawaii would be fun to watch

I’ve been in bumper to bumper traffic jams in the Smokey Mountains not much fun. I’m not a fan of navigating with just a phone or watch. I think a lot of people don’t know where to buy maps and they just download a route then follow the arrow. The field of view is too small on your phone.

Your hiking videos are informative and helpful. Thank you for all your good work. On the subject of timed entry enforced by parks, I think while it may help reduce traffic congestion and waiting time, it will make the park less accessible for folks who don't have easy access to internet. The assumption of the time entry is 1.everyone has easy access to internet and 2.everyone must use internet. The first assumption is not true, the second implies governmental coercion which is dangerous.

Not against freebies or cash for stuff you believe in. Not into disguised infomercials. I watched Hansen and Beckers misadventure and was appalled by it….hope it’s a cautionary tale for people about weather, terrain, endurance, and personal limits. The fact they got a permit is besides the point, the rangers weren’t hiking with them. How they used it was their responsibility. I unsubscribed from both their channels after watching it. Beckers illness was no joke.

@@christopherhaak9824 if you read all the comments on their videos their fanboys would heartily disagree with us. I hike solo a lot and am keenly aware of risks. It’s my ambition to never have to press the SOS. And the fact that Hansen is upset about his ticket when he was trying to, as you say, monetize the filming of the disaster is, er, epic as well. Be safe out there.
