Hiking Shoes - Altra Lone Peak & Olympus

I've tried loads of different shoes and boots for hiking over the years, but in recent years have been using trail running shoes nearly all of the time. In this video I look at the two pairs of trail runners from Altra that I've found work best for me - the Lone Peak, and my current favourite - the Olympus.

Altra's are now my work shoes,the regular runners, and the trail runners for everyday use, and outdoors,no problem transitioning!

That's great - some people take to the zero drop really easily, and have no problems, sounds like you're one of the lucky ones! 😀

I have the loan peak 6, they are always my go to, even if just visiting family and friends or going to the shops. Love em 🤙🤟👌

Thanks for breaking the differences down for us. I know the dilemma you began to address-we are so used to pointed toes, narrow toe boxes, and curved shoes where our feet do not curve...that we are used to this EVEN THOUGH THE ALTRA IS "MORE" NATURAL. It's ironic the zero drop feels "weird." I'm glad I finally tried Altras (and I'm only walker and hiker...NOT a runner!)

Moved to altras to try zero drop and can't fault them, love the big toe box and got a pair it lone peaks and love them, covered about 500 miles in them and didn't like how quick the tread wore down, got the Olympus for the vibram sole and have no dramas with them but like you said they are a bit more snug which I don't mind to be fare, cheers again for a honest review

You've taken the same shoe journey as I. My Olympus shoes always blow out the sides before anything else gives out. I would gladly take a few more grams to strengthen the fabric on the sides. I have a pair of knitted gloves that a razor will not cut. Perhaps Altra should look into that material. Great review backed up with experience.

I bought two pairs of Olympus 3.5 and they last more than a year of daily wear. I returned both 4.0 and 5.0 because they reduced the overall padding and nowhere as comfortable as 3.5. I like the look of 4.0 and 5.0 but the tongue is too thin and the upper doesn't feel durable. I would buy the 3.5 again if they are still available, LOL.

The olympus looks good but that giant pull tab on the back looks like it would wear on the back of my heel. I had a pair of reebok trail shoes that rubbed really bad.

Hey, that pull tab is pretty large. I've found my heel does rub on it, but I've never had any pain or skin rubbing from it, my socks usually cover that area. It does tend to funnel any bits of debris that I flick up into the shoe though, so I've been wearing gaiters with them.

why they just cant make a shoes that will last? i used a pair of la sportiva tx hike just on west highland way and had to send them back. i have nike zoom trainers that i wear almost daily for 3 years and they still alive and look fine. maybe it s worth to have a look at nike hiking shoes. so many complain abt altras falling apart now.. i m looking at topo trailventure,but my size is 180 pounds all i can find. which is too steep for similar trainers.

I hiked with someone recently who was using La Sportiva shoes, but can't remember the model. The grip had worn pretty quickly and the uppers were also wearing. The Topo's I've been using have impressed me with their durability.

@@PaulandaPack That model of la sportivas seem to have a good sole and it didn't have any wear on it after whw,so performed well.but glue started to come apart on other parts of the shoe also waterproofness was compromised somehow.. Btw these Nike trainers I mentioned survived a lot including 2 washing machine cycles. I still wear them n happy. Just now trying altra Olympus 5 mids and some shite digging into my ankle bone causing pain..let's see if it will go away after I wear them for sometime. I mean what about environmental footprint all these "high end" products cause. Too much inferior stuff these days for ridiculous money with lot of promises.

I was attracted to the Altra shoes . In the past, i bought the lone peak 3.5. Unfortunately it became to worst trail show i ever bought thanks to poor outsole grip . They were using their Maxtrac thread pattern in that shoe but it was useless and it failed me badly. If i was force to choose between lone peak and olympus. I would surely choose Olympus because it is using the more reliable vibram outsole for better grip.

What I dont understand is that people still think that gore tex on shoes is worth it

I can see the appeal for some situations, but I wouldn't personally wear them for long distance hiking now.

Yeah, once it's wet out, it takes ages to dry. Plus, I've found it only offers so much protection before it wets out. It's just my personal preference.

For me, when I'mhiking, I would take the Olympus GTX over the Lone Peak All Weather - I like the extra cushioning, and I find the Vibram sole gives me better grip. 👍

Just wondering what your brannock device foot size/width is?

Hey, sorry - it's been years and years since I've had my foot measured properly with a brannock device! My left foot is 28cm (11.02") from heel to toe tip, and is 10cm (3.94") across at it's widest point. My right foot is slightly longer than my left too!

great video, agree with everything you said about the Lone Peak 5s. Absolutely love but agree about the wear on soles. Ive been wearing them this week in Gran Canaria and the grip on dry ground is unreal. However, I think I'll give the Olympus a try for the next pair of trail shoes as the cushioning and grip look better.

What a great honest review, thanks for taking the time to do it Paul. Subscribed. I've been wearing Lone Peaks for running for years now and have always loved the comfort as you say but now I'm walking the SWCP the bottom of my feet get sore after any road sections or days over 20 miles. So last week I picked up some Olympus 5's, put them on and was horrified that they didn't feel like Altras but almost like Hoka's instead. They still have the wide toe box but as you said in the video they do feel snug compared to LP's, its across the bridge of my foot they feel tight. Did you feel you needed to almost break the Olympus in? Do they stretch after a while? Love the cushioning but they just feel so different to LP's in the fit.

Hey Mike, thanks for the sub and taking the time to comment. I almost sent my Olympus back because they felt so different to my Lone Peaks. After about 100 miles though, they did seem to stretch a bit, and I grew more accustomed to them. There's definitely a big difference in how they feel when compared to the Lone Peaks, and I wonder if it's due to the materials used. For me, the Olympus win due to the extra cushioning, comfort, and the vibram sole.

@@PaulandaPack I literally had my Olympus boxed up ready to send back (they're on Sportshoes for £85 + a 25%off deal for easter right now!) but I've decided to keep them. I started getting Plantar towards the end of the Autumn so anything that will help with that will be worth a try.

my guess is you were sliding forward in the LP's with each step because you were probably overstriding and landing on your heel (which basically everyone does). This is what will have eventually caused the hot spot on the base of your foot. You were probably also walking faster on road sections to get back on the trail, which probably made the sliding worse. Sinch the laces down more or stop overstriding.

Great video, I'm looking to buy my first pair of altras and im going for the olimpus, im currently using Salomon trail shoes, are the olimpus true to size? Im an 8 in most shoes from hoka to Salomon asics ect. Thanks keep up the good work

Hey, thanks for watching. Both the Lone Peak and the Olympus in the video are a UK 11. The Olympus feels a little tighter than the Lone Peak on my feet, although I'm not sure if that is due to the different materials that are used. I take a UK 11 in most shoes (except La Sportiva that come up really small on me) and I've got enough room in the Olympus for what I want. I'd always recommend trying a pair on if it's at all possible though. Hope this helps.

Hey Daryl, I personally find them quite spongy. I've just purchased a pair of Topo Athletic Mtn Racer 3's, and find that they're a more firm cushion when compared to the Olympus.

I'm just about to replace them in the next few days. I got them in August last year so they're 9 or 10 months old now. Fabric on the inner heels has worn through, grips have flattened quite a lot, 1 or 2 of the vibram inserts are starting to separate from the sole. I think the cushioning has flattened out quite a lot too. They've probably done something like 600-800 miles at a guess.

Brilliant video, how are your olympus after 4months durability wise? Do you have any comparison with older versions like 4?

Hey, sorry for the late reply. I actually bought my Olympus around August last year, so they're around 9 months old now. I've just got back from a 4 day trip and they're about on their last legs now, although I have been wearing them for work daily too. I'd guess there's somewhere between 600-800 miles on them. Some of the Vibram inserts on the soles are starting to come away from the sole, the cushioning has compressed quite a lot, and they're showing heavy wear in some areas too. I didn't try any of the Olympus 4's to compare them with, sorry.

I found the grips really good. I used mine in the Pyrenees on the GR10 and they were great, didn't have any problems.

I have, and have found that they gripped really well on wet rock with only the occasional slip. Vibram performs very well in the wet and dry.
