In this video, I am back on the trail again continuing with my hike along the Angles Way long distance footpath. Carrying everything I need, I am walking the 93 mile route from west to east, starting in Great Yarmouth and finishing in Thetford following the river Waveney on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.
In this episode, I pick up from where I ended the last section in the market town of Beccles. Joined by my buddy Martin (vildmark.co.uk) for the first couple of miles, I head off along muddy and flooded footpaths and across wide open fields, passing through the beautiful Suffolk countryside and its pretty villages and finally into Bungay. The river loops here, almost encompassing the town and gave it its unusual name derived from the the French words Bon Isle - this section was particularly beautiful despite costing me my dry feet!
My day ended near Flixton where I found a quiet isolated woodland to call home for the night, my tarp and bivvy giving me shelter from the heavy rain that filled the night.
In part 4, I continue along the Waveney valley heading ever closer to the source of the river, soaking up the sights and sounds and the pouring rain.
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching.
Credits to Vildmark.co.uk for the drone footage - thanks mate!

Stopped off at a cafe there that did the best homemade sausages. a couple of times my dad bought them in bulk from the cafe owner to take home and cook. and if i remember rightly there was always an impressive floral display as you enter the town. Also i ate my first ever red banana in Bungay. Funny how things bring back the oddest memories, cheers. :)

Simon, I cringed when I saw you walking through that water in your leather boots. Oh, Buddy, not good. I’m willing to bet they’ve seen water before though. Wet socks and boots in the morning is less than ideal. So, GoPro has a design problem and won’t help you. Good to know. Makes me rethink buying a GoPro for my Appalachian Trail hike. I’ll be sure to tell my hiking buddies. We get a lot of rain in East Tennessee mountains and fording creeks and rivers is kinda normal. Yep, we’d rather have dry socks and shoes in the morning, heh, heh, which is almost never. A brisk walk warms everything up though. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks mate! Leather boots are the best boots for wet conditions - as long as they are dried slowly afterwards and treated to a little pampering with leather balm 😁 The microphone cover is only on the media mod for the GoPro, so if you’re just interested in the standard GoPro, this won’t be an issue 😁👍

In the Swedish army we were taught a neat trick on how to dry wet socks whilst on the trail. Hang the wet socks over your sholders (underneath all clothes so it contacts your bare skin) and during the march your body heat will effectively evaporate the water and dry your socks so that you can change to a dry pair every 2-3 hours depending on how hard your march is. I really like your walks Simon. Walking is the primal means of human transportation and resonates down the ages. Although, my favourite is the canoe episodes. Looking forward to your next leg (seems like it could be an interesting one). /Karl

@@simonablokeinthewoods It works surprisingly well. You'll just have to put up with your smelly socks around the neck. But it also means that you can wash a pair of muddy socks (or other under garments) and then dry them during the day's march.

Nice video, if you put your socks into the sleeping bag with you next to your skin they should dry out for the next day as long as you wring them out. 🤞

I know exactly where you camped, good choice. Not far from the old flixton airfield, would have been great to camp there in ww2 and listen to the roar of the liberators queuing up at night. 😀
