Marley S. Thank you! Going to China isn't as expensive as you might think. I saved money for about 6 months by not eating out at restaurants and supplemented my income by selling plasma. I also found really cheap flights (about $750 round trip to Beijing from Miami) If I could do it so can you. Start saving and get out there!

Thank you! Glad you liked it. I would definitely recommend doing the lesser known sections of the Great Wall. Sections like Mutianyu and Badaling are heavily trafficked and mostly restored. Although further away, the lesser known sections are generally much more pleasant and authentic ;) Safe travels!

+attymarco Thank you! At the beginning of our hike it looked like there was some restoration work, but towards end (2nd half of video) the wall is completely wild. We went in October so it was nice weather, not too hot. I also took a liter of water in my bag so prevent dehydration.. Glad you were ok! I'm sure you could still visit this amazing place again!

I was just in Mexico in January and got a chance to see Chichén Itzá, it's very impressive! I plan to visit again someday to see Palenque too

+Parameswary Thangavelu thanks! No, we arrived in Jingshanling and departed from Simatai. I would recommend a one way hike that way you can see more and not have to backtrack. You can arrange transport at the other end like we did. I also definitely recommend going to the less frequented portions of the wall. Mutanyui and Badaling are close but very congested and unauthentic. Safe travels!

Thank you! We started at Jinshanling and worked our way to Simatai. We entered through Zhuanduokou Pass and got off the wall at tower #22 (not technically east gate which is a little further) Hope this answered your question ;)

+panos sior Hello! thanks for watching our video. To answer your question, yes it is possible. While doing the hike from Jinshanling to Simatai, we only encountered 2 hikers going the opposite direction (Simatai to Jinshanling) so it appears that Simatai to Jinshanling is a less common route, although I'm sure, just as beautiful and challenging. The only reason we did it the way we did is because of the transport options offered by our hostel. They dropped us off at Jinshanling and picked us up at Simatai. There are several transport options available to do it the opposite way, China Highlights being one of the bigger companies offering this. You would be dropped off at Simatai West (also called the east gate of the Jinshanling Great Wall) which is about 130 kilometers from downtown Beijing. After purchasing tickets, you would climb up the wall through an unrestored watchtower called Houchuankou Pass (后川口). After about 3 hours you would end your hike arriving at Zhuanduokou Pass (砖垛口), it is a three-story tower with large red, wooden windows. I do believe this way would be challenging but for a different reason. Ours had a lot of very steep climbing. Personally I find climbing up a very steep incline much less dangerous than descending. It is easier for me to lean into the incline and maintain balance, whereas climbing downwards at an incline, you have to lean back to not fall. I can also say that as a rule of thumb, descending is a lot less tiring. Check out our blog for the accompanying post with more detail about the hike.
