Hiking The John Muir Trail in The Big South Fork TN | 4K

3 жыл бұрынOn this adventure, I return to the Big South Fork to hike the John Muir Trail. 50 miles in 3 days, what an adventure. This trail starts just north of Pickett State park in Jamestown, TN and ends at the Burnt Mill bridge in Oneida, TN. Most of the trail runs along the southern end of the Sheltowee Trace, but breaks off in a few sections in order to showcase some of the best views along the river. That tunnel!! I’d have to put on my headlamp, yell into it a couple of times (“hey bear”? “Hey creepy lurking person”?), then get through it as quickly as possible. Freeeakky!

My two favorite overlooks, John Muir Overlook and Angel Falls Overlook and the Honey Creek Loop is a favorite of mine. I grew up in that area and spent a big part of my childhood and teenage years hiking and camping in the Burnt Mill/Honey Creek area. Awesome video.

Been hiking around the BSF December 2023. It is very quiet and peaceful in December, if someone likes solitude and quiet. Also no snakes or bugs. But it gets dark at 5:30 so the nights are really long. Temps have been in the 30s to 50s, very pleasant for hiking

Awesome stuff! I really enjoyed seeing it so green. I can't believe how torn up those bridges are, but after seeing pictures of the flooding, I suppose I can see how it happened. Some of the stuff I really liked in this one: the tunnel/cave, the newt, all the snakes (that copperhead looked angry, and the rattlesnake had a massive rattle!), the azaleas (foreshadowing!), the distant shot of you at the Angel Falls Overlook, the fog over the river. Congrats on finishing the trail. You didn't even look tired at the end! Thanks for sharing and giving me even more inspiration to do this trail myself. See you on the next one!

Great video, brother! Took me back! Congrats on completing the JMT, that’s an accomplishment, that trail is a challenge! I love your shots going by O&W bridge- those were some of my favorite of your video. It’s also crazy how the greenery makes that place look so different than when I was there in Jan. Sorry you had to deal with some rain, but glad it didn’t “drench” your spirit! 🤣

Really pretty video. There are no ugly hikes in the BSF. i am currently section hiking the Sheltowe northbound. This fall/winter I hope to do the 64 mile loop that begins and ends at Bandy Creek. This loop utilizes some of the John Muir trail that I have yet to hike.This being a loop makes logistics more simple. Keep up the good work with the bees. Local honey is an elixir of life.

Awesome hike and video Nick! I really enjoyed it. Did one hike in the BSF back in November of 2016 I'm going to try to get back down there and do another before this year is out it's about the driving limit for me to do a dayhike as I don't get enough time off to backpack down there.

You certainly won't be disappointed! I'd like to get back down and visit Pickett State park. They have several small trails with great sights! A lot of bang for the buck type stuff.

From that overlook at 8:20, you can see a lone standing chimney from the home of Ranse Boyatt in the No Business community. I would encourage you to read up on that family...and the murders associated with their story. Look up the Jerome Boyatt story and the reason his father, Ranse, was found hung in that house with that chimney you can see. Local vigilante justice back in '33.

Did a similar trek back in June and that section down by the river was a disaster! That trail needs some serious love from the NPS. The same things you encountered mud, huge piles of debris, snakes, broken bridges etc. We wound up bailing and taking Hatfield Ridge up just to get away from it! The north ends at a parking lot in the middle if nowhere. Burnt Mill Bridge just seemed like a more grand ending. A friend of mine is considering going north beyond the ending and finishing in Pickett State park.

I'm planning to do the JMT around the end of April. Would you suggest NoBo or SoBo on it? Is the trail marked pretty well? Thanks! Enjoyed the video!

Thank you for watching. The trail is marked pretty well since most if it's follows the Sheltowee Trace. Watch for the John Muir profile on markers and the Sheltowee Turtles. I would start in Pickett State park and go south, since the finish would end at a landmark. The north end is a small parking lot on the side of the road.
