The single or double loops around Crystal Cove are also pretty nice. Awesome to have this area in our backyard.

I'm further south in San Diego, and my favorite I do often is Sycamore Canyon / Goodan Ranch southeast of Poway. Very similar good loop of 6 miles and around 1,000 feet up down. Always a great day when I spend a couple hours there

What a beautiful local hike you have! Your videos inspire me to check these out. I'm grateful for my local hikes which are closer to the Santa Monica Mountains. I'm doing the Backbone Trail for my longer hikes during this shoulder season and the Trans-Catalina Trail for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Thanks again!

Nice, yea, I wish traffic wasn't so soul-crushing in LA, otherwise I'd be in the Santa Monica MTNs more often. Such an epic area.

@@Hikingguy indeed! I usually get up early enough to get to the trailhead before traffic, and fortunately before surise too.

one of my favorites too- solid mileage to prep or Jacinto / Gorgonio trips. Love that 10 mile loop from the ridge parking lot

Thank you, again, for a fantastic video guide! Your content is the best! I believe that first bird you encountered is actually a California Thrasher.

Thanks, Cris. Nice views. Here in the Bighorn National Forest, we've got too much mud and snow for this kind of a hike and not enough snow to XC ski. I'll be backpacking overnight soon enough. I've enjoyed watching some of your gear videos today while I build my enthusiasm for getting out.

I was lucky enough to do Tongue River Canyon years ago - so nice there. Hopefully I can sneak back at some point. Thanks for watching my vids!

The two birds from ~5:16-5:30 are turkey vultures. You can usually identify them from a distance just by the way the rock back and forth when they glide. Your video shows them doing just that.

Don' think turkey vultures have white bellies

We have lots of turkey vultures here in TX and that definitely wasn’t one of them.

Hey, Eric! I believe that's a red-tailed hawk in the video. Another bird of prey we see a lot in SoCal is a red-shouldered hawk, which has a red breast.

Have you ever hiked Bell View trail in RSM? It’s a very foot training hike!

Its a great one - might try to get a guide up for it in the next month or two while its still all great. Once the mud dries out a bit. Great suggestion

What’s the best time of year to go and the time of year to avoid? Thank you!
@arjunbhattacherjee4 ай бұрын
@@ggs0605 well I usually try to avoid the day after some rain..makes the trails real muddy..although I did end up doing the trail on a day when it was misty and foggy..a very light drizzle and rainbow ..I don’t like to do it when it’s too hot or the suns out in full force..so probably early spring and late fall would be my recommendation…I’m planning to do it next weekend since the weather looks good ..if u want a partner let me know

Love your channel. I’m going to hike Little Bear, Blanca peak and Ellingwood this summer. I will camp at lake Como for several nights to acclimate (coming from Missouri). Do you have any “go to” foods for multi day trip? Also, thanks for your review of the Epix Pro. I ended up selling my Fenix to get one and couldn’t be happier.
@Hikingguy4 ай бұрын
Ah that's great to hear, glad you like the Epix. And for food, I generally go with anything that looks tasty. If I don't want to cook I'll bring the Greenbelly Meal 2 Go, which is basically a huge natural energy bar. amzn.to/3vtVlPR - For dinner I'll generally do something savory though.

I am not an expert hiker, but I have been hiking for awhile. This was HARD for me. Steep rocky climbs. Wear long pants and long sleeves for the single track narrow part of the trail. It's overgrown and you could get scraped up.

I like this trail but its closed for a few days after a downpour 😢
@Hikingguy4 ай бұрын
Yea most of the trails in local, county and state parks seems to close for at least a day or two when it rains. When that's the case I'll usually head to Cleveland NF / Bedford Peak, which is always open.
