The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Hike to Mt San Jacinto is a great way to bag Southern California’s second-highest peak without putting in a considerable effort. It’s still a challenging 11-mile hike, but it’s nothing like climbing Mt San Jacinto from Palm Springs or Idyllwild; taking the Palm Springs tram cuts about 6,000 feet of climbing off the hike. The summit of Mt San Jacinto is one of my favorites because it straddles the line between Coastal California and the Sonoran Desert, allowing you to see the transition between the two ecosystems, and on a clear day, from Catalina Island to Mt Charleston, just outside of Las Vegas. It’s a fun and insanely beautiful hike.

With regard to the stone shelter near the summit of Mt. San Jacinto, I used to have coffee with the guy who built it. I lived in Idyllwild for a brief spell back in late '70 through June of '71. The mason, known as Zubie, frequented the Coffee Cup, which is still there but under a different name. As I recall he emigrated to this country from Austria sometime in the 20s or early 30s, and was in the CCC, Civilian Conservation Corps. He told me that he built the hut in about 1934 using a technique called "dry masonry," with no mortar being used. I remember seeing the hut the first time I made the summit of Mt. San Jac, back in '58 or '59, as a Boy Scout. The fact that the hut is still standing, despite the numerous earthquakes that have occurred in the past 90 years or so, is a testament to Zubie's skill as a stonemason.

I used to work there as a tram operator! Wonderful place, they run like a tight-nit family & everyone is great there. I loved that it was almost impossible to stay in a bad mood working there. No matter how bad your day was, once you get over tower 3 and get the views & some fresh air, it all melts away! You just missed the snow! We got some this past wknd & there’s definitely more on the way. Really loved your video!

Ahh that's awesome and great to hear. Yea, everyone is always super-friendly at the tram and it's always a pleasure to visit. I've been going for the last 10 years and always a fun adventure. And yea, today San J is probably getting clobbered. The mountain weather has summit winds at 70mph.... not a good hair day....

Thanks so much for the detailed and informative vlog. I have been up the tram a number of times both in summer and winter but mainly stay closer to the tram station with its incredible views of the Coachella Valley. I can even pick out where I live in Palm Springs. Always wondered about the hike to the summit. Now I know and it is as beautiful as I imagined it would be. So amazing to go from desert palms to high mountain pines. It never gets old. The diversity of California is truly amazing.

I agree 100%, it always amazes me how I can be in the Sonoran Desert and then a snow-capped mountain in a relatively short hike. Glad you got to experience the tram and area - I love it here and don't plan on leaving - so many great hikes.

Cris, this is a nice hike. I did it back in April 2018 while out there with my wife and parents. My wife just did the loop hike around in the park. Even though the elevation gain and distance is not that much, it can be a bit of shock to the system, because most folks are coming in from PS which is at ~400 ft of elevation. So, in the span of about an hour, you go from there to ~8500 ft and then start the hike. Drink plenty of water before you start and then carry what you need. It is a nice hike to do in the fall or spring when there is little to no snow up there and it also isn't that warm out.

Glad to hear that you got to do it and yes, agreed 100%, it's def a shock to the system coming from up from the desert floor. I think this hike kicks people's butts more than most because of that. This was the first time that I did this route without snow in a couple of years. Such a pretty route.

@@ayanamitchell7906 When I did this hike, it was in the 90s in PS, but 50s at the top of the tram. I wore shorts and a long sleeve top. There was just a little scattered residual snow as you got near the peak.

Gosh, this hike won’t make your freckles stand out like I saw on your hike C2C😊 I did my C2C thanks to your amazing video and I did everything you showed there 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 I walked 11 hrs throughout the night 🎉🎉🎉( bottom to the tram )😎 next day I did, tram yo the peak it was an EPIC experience this trail is a luxury in the desert ☮️

I did this hike the hard way as a kid back in 1969. As well as Baden Powell, Baldy, Gorgonio, then Whitney as a Boy Scout. I thought the trail was better marked. I am in good shape. But not having hiked this peak in several years, I think I will pass on this one. I thought the trail was better marked. Instead, I will try Baden Powell again which I know is well marked. Thank you.

Climbed San "Jack" from all sides with a trail. ... SoCal Boy Scout mtn of passage... Did it once after getting off the tram. It's a haul of a dayhike and the elevation gain weeds out the smokers, sandal/tennis shoes,thirsty, hungry,out of shape, sprained ankles, mosquito bit,crampy muscles,cardiovascular problems,,,,headaches... Be prepared to turn back lest you miss the last tram down.

NOTE: While driving fwy10, notice the steep avalanche gullies off of the peak. That's a "practice " dayhike for those locals bound for Mt Everest( or just because it's there).

Thanks for this.. as someone from the flat midwest, the Tram was a real ear-popping treat! And when we went it was a very clear day and you could see for miles and miles, according to the sign there. So glad I did not decide to hike further.. and your video was just great!

I found your website when I needed to get out of town and do a hike close to my homebase after July 4th... did the Tahquitz Loop hike. I was ill prepared and terribly out of shape: hiking in newish 511 boots, a sundress, and carrying food stuff in a Costco bag. Needless to say I had blisters, heat exhaustion/altitude sickness(???), and severe pain everywhere. Two days later I did the SJ Peak via Devil's Slide hike. Started from Humber Park at 6am and returned at 7:45 pm but wore my Altra Lone Peak work shoes I forgot I had in the vehicle... so much better than than those boots! Discovered from a couple at the peak that this hike was an option from the tram. After research I found your KZfaq channel and this video that I was able to share with my Mom (who is not very mobile and unsble to hike but enjoys nature). It's so nice to be able to show her what I'm doing on my hikes. I've since done my first backpacking trip to Round Valley for two nights and a hike to SJ Peak via the tram route. Thanks for your informative videos/blogs. I'll make a concerted effort to like your videos and purchase using your links. Looking forward to watching more of your videos and doing those hikes. Thank you!!

Ah that's great to hear and I'm glad you found the Lone Peaks work well. Having good footwear is a big factor in whether or not a hike is a pleasure or torture. And happy to hear that you're getting to explore the San Jacinto area. I wanted to do more guides there this summer but the heat has been crazy. Maybe in the next few months. We took the tram up and hiked to Round Valley to camp. We summited in the morning. We’ve found ways to get around being slow hikers who still want to do it all!

Just did this hike after doing the 10 miles from Palm Springs. This whole section was about 90% covered in snow. Looks much easier without the snow 😂

It depends on the conditions, the move is to check the website for the park before you go - most folks just use their camp stove I'd imagine

I had family visiting me for Thanksgiving, I drove from Fullerton , when a got there they were shopping because people need to get tickets on line, on line tickets were sold out, we had to get back sadly 😔, so next time I'll get tickets on line FIRST

Many people still get lost if they veer right and follow the waterfalls it has many dead ends. A navy vet died in 2004 at a gorg close by

Looks like a great hike Chris! Have you ever done the "Devils Slide" trail from Idlewild? It ends at a junction to go several directions. Just as the name implies, it's a "hump"! Also, when taking the tram, is there a place to camp for the night near by to acclimate before going to the summit? Maybe near the ranger station?

Yup, that's a great trail - I have it covered in my guide to Tahquitz Peak - only thing is that you need a permit on weekends. I'll do dome guides from Devils Slide and Fuller at some point, I love that area. And yes, you can camp at Round Valley or Tamarack Valley, both really beautiful and nice spots!

You can do this hike any time in the summer - it's much cooler at this altitude. You just don't want to do it in the winter / snow as a beginner.

The hardest part about this hike is the new revolving tram. I did not like that thing, not one bit. Once my feet were on solid ground, I could hike, climb, descend, whatever, for hours on end.

I'd check at the ranger station on the way up. I haven't been there in the last few weeks. Generally one path is way more worn in the snow though and it's usually obvious.

JN, he's not a meteorologist. Do ur do diligence and monitor the weather urself. That's the only way u'll know. We are in a severe drought so good luck with that.

You can easily get the top of the tram weather and information on snow up there. IT all depends on the weather.

In June 1984, a tram car was headed down the mountain when a bolt from a shock absorber snapped, causing a 30-pound (14 kg) piece of metal to crash through a Plexiglas window along the car's roof. Tram passenger Elaine Tseko of Ontario, California, was struck by the piece and later died as a result of the injury.[4] In September 1984, during routine maintenance, an auxiliary cable snapped and wrapped around the main cable tracks. The Desert Sun newspaper reported that if the broken cable hadn't wedged itself under the main track cables, a rescue car with the tram's workmen in it could have plummeted down the mountain into the lower tramway station. "Without the snag," a state investigator said, "those two men wouldn't be with us today."[4] In October 2003, a steel cable broke and caused a mechanical failure that left more than fifty tramway customers hanging in mid-air and one hundred passengers stranded at the Mountain station for 4½ hours. During the crisis, tramway officials sought a rescue helicopter but could not locate one.[6] The obstruction was removed by a tram operator with no training in maintenance, utilizing a borrowed Leatherman utility knife. The Desert Sun later reported that a cable inspector had discovered a break in the rescue line almost two hours before the incident occurred.[7]
