Moulded by the chaos and anarchy of 13th century Anatolia, the Ottomans spent the most of the 14th century aggressively expanded their realm at the expense of their neighbours. By 1389, not only had they stripped the Byzantine Empire off key Anatolian cities, but they had penetrated deep into the Balkans. So how did the Ottomans go from being a tiny beylik on the frontier, to a regional power force whose territories spanned two continents within just a few generations?

Timurid Empire: Expected to become eternal but destroyed inside out just a century later. However, Timur's empire is revived in India as the Mughal Empire later on. Ottoman Empire: Unexpectedly survived all the odds and become one of the world's superpowers that controlled portions of Europe, Asia and Africa at the same time.

Être fort comme un Turc (‘to be strong like a turk’): This expression originates in the 15th century when the Turks had a reputation for being strong, almost unbeatable warriors due to their numerous victories. At the time, the Ottoman Empire ruled large parts of south-east Europe, north Africa and western Asia. It is said that François I, King of France, was gifted Turkish armour by Suleiman the Magnificent (the tenth and most famous sultan of the Ottoman Empire) during their alliance. When he wore it, he is said to have exclaimed: “Here I am now, strong as a Turk!”.

THE TURKS AND THE WEST. Europe stood in awe of the Ottomans who crushed many states and conquered vast territories, going, as all patriotic Turks will proudly point out, "all the way to the gates of Vienna." European literature is replete with the depictions of the Turk as the hated enemy. The English often thought of the Turk as awe-inspiring and destructive. Thomas Fuller wrote in The Holy Warre (1639): "The Turkish Empire is the greatest... the sun ever saw. ...Grass springeth not where the grand signior's horse setteth his foot."

Covers the early beginnings well. Could be fleshed out of course, e.g., the coalition under the Serb included many nationalities - including local Kosovars, and Albanians - which makes a mockery of modern era Serbs claiming Kosovo as 'theirs', and more could be done to describe the threat from Timur in the east, are but two examples, but then it would be a much longer video. For those with some knowledge of the era this is an excellent addition to your 'library'. Thank you Hikma History for your well researched and presented efforts.

Timur could have completely destroyed the Ottoman Empire. He could have killed all the princes. in ancient sources, it is stated as follows: Timur and the children of the sultan who came after him did not touch the Ottoman Empire. Because the Ottomans were fighting the Serbs and other infidel nations in the Balkans. They didn't want to touch the ottoman.

I believe the biggest role to the growth of the Ottomans was the overlooked Bektashi Order (it is even said that a bektashi sayyid gave them the title of Sultan), both the janissary corps and the style of governance seem to find their roots there. Also "islamic orthodoxy" is a fairly modern phenomenon back then esoteric movements were not really considered as distinct from the rest of islamic theological thought and it was mostly sufi orders that helped islam spread.

The Turks were considered as the best warriors due to their horsemanship and skill in archery. Kaushik Roy., n.d. Military Transition in Early Modern Asia, 1400-1750: Cavalry, Guns, Government and Ships (Bloomsbury Studies in Military History). p.24. The Turks too , the great warriors of the steppes , were almost haughty in the assumption that they inherited the jihad fighting spirit of the tradition and carried it half - way into Europe . Turko-Persia in Historical Perspective p.94 The Seljukian Turks had had some great warriors ; the period of their power was during the eleventh and twelfth centuries ; they had taken the place of the Arabs as the great Moslem power of the east , though an Arab caliph still nominally reigned at Baghdad . The Divine Aspect of History Volume 2 p.324 In the west the Seljuq invasion of Asia Minor began the process which was to make it the modern land of the Turks and the base from which the greatest Islamic empire of the past 600 years would expand into southeast Europe . MacEachern, S., 2010. The new cultural atlas of the Islamic world. p.32. THE TURKS AND THE WEST. Europe stood in awe of the Ottomans who crushed many states and conquered vast territories, going, as all patriotic Turks will proudly point out, "all the way to the gates of Vienna." In my mind, the ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire in many ways mirror each other. Both were born in the borderlands between Islam and Christianity, in the wake of nomadic migrations and invasions from the great steppes. Both were born from a relatively unassuming small state among others like it, who were initially in the shadow of the remnant of a great empire (the Golden Horde as a remnant of Genghis Khan's empire, and the Byzantine Empire as a remnant of the once much larger Roman Empire), and both eventually came to overcome and absorb those remnants of empires, while gaining culturally from it. They're mirrored because the Ottomans were muslims, and the empire they conquered was christian, while the Russians were of course christians and the empire they conquered was muslim. Another interesting parallel is how both could for a long time also relatively credibly claim to be the champions of their respective faiths, specifically Sunni Islam and Orthodox Christianity. They both achieved a position where nobody else of the same faith came even close in power, while there were always at least a few very powerful Catholic empires. I think both benefitted from their frontier conditions, and by both having their most dangerous rivals to the west and thus not surrounded by as many dangerous enemies as, say, Austria was. Well, at least after Timur was gone, he was pretty dangerous!

"It is important to note, however, that the Ottoman state recognised no official differentiation by language or ethnicity among its Muslim citizens: the modem notion of being a "Turk" was until the end of the nineteenth century alien to the Ottoman elites, who regarded themselves as "Ottomans" rather than "Turkish." In fact the term "Turk" had the connotation of being an uneducated peasant. Ottoman Turkish, the language of state, was not the vernacular of the mass of the Turkish-speaking population, and along with being a Muslim, knowledge of it was a requirement of high office in the Ottoman state." Poulton, Hugh (2000). "The Muslim experience in the Balkan states, 1919‐1991." Nationalities Papers. 28. (1): 47-48.

It makes sense. Only in western terminology such terms with some severe ambiguity were used to define the Ottoman Empire. In Turkish\Turkic sense, definitive terms like "the Turkish\Turk Empire" etc. make no sense, since even Seljuks of Anatolia (or even contemporous Timurids, Safavids if we are to stretch) can be deemed as "Turkish\Turk Empire". (IE: "The Turk Empire" is just an orientalistic and wrong terminology to define the OE, which slips out the fact that the western academia -of then- were kinda illiterate about Turkic ethnographics. ) And Turks, apart from the founding ethnics of the empire, are just one of the many ethnicities consisting the Ottomans. So Turk or Turkish would be shortcoming to define the OE.

Only thing you got wrong is that the ottomans didn’t force anyone to convert to Islam but they did not have Christian’s in their army the jannisarries and other soldiers of non Turkish descent were all converts to Islam that was a rule that Christian’s and Jews were free to practice religion of their choice but they could not have weapons own land or hood government offices or join the army . Any devshirme soldiers were also converted to Islam . So the entire army was always Muslim wether they were born Muslim or not .

I can goon for days and then what even sadder is that are ppl from the east o being disrespected disrespected this way we start calling. Our own history by the incorrect names given to us and shamefully scholars from the west rarely correct themselves. I d like to hear your feed back or just wanted to bring this to ur attention I believe it is high time we take our real royal identity a back and there anymore facts which have been intentionally hidden from the plll from the east I could share but don't want to stray from the subject of the osman empire 💙☝️🙏🌞🌛

A riot broke out on 19 August, when a mob stormed the Latin quarter, starting a fire that spread as far as the summit of the First Hill and damaged the porch of Haghia Sophia, adding to the frustrated rage of the populace." ......." the Latins took control of Constantinople and then sacked it for three days, killing some 2,000 Greeks. Nicetas Choniates writes of how the Latins looted and profaned Haghia Sophia, leaving the city in utter desolation. They destroyed the high altar, a work of art admired by the entire world, and shared out the pieces among themselves… And they brought horses and mules into the church, the better to carry off the holy vessels and the engraved silver and gold they had torn from the throne, and the pulpit… A common harlot was enthroned in the patriarch's chair, to hurl insults at Jesus Christ; and she sang bawdy songs and profaned the holy place… nor was there any mercy shown to virtuous maidens, innocent maids or even virgins consecrated to God… In the streets, houses and churches there could be heard only cries and lamentations… Here there were fights and quarrels over loot, there prisoners were being led away, and everywhere among the raped and wounded lay the dead." @@HHH-zz3ip During the Seljuk and Ottoman eras the child of a christian and a muslim always became muslim. This derives from the Koranic law which was exercised during the whole lifespan of the Ottoman empire. For example, a muslim man takes a christian woman in his harem or even marries her. Their child can never be christian and can only become muslim. Another example. If a christian man felt in love with a muslim woman and wanted to marry her, the only way to manage this was to become muslim himself. So again their children could only become muslims. Those Greeks who mixed with muslims are the ancestors of modern "Turks". This is why, according to ALL recent DNA studies, today's Turks' have more traces of Greek than turkic descent! lol On the other hand Greeks that never changed faith, remained Christians, intermarried with Christians and from whom modern Greeks are descended, had no mix with Muslims whatsoever... It's plain logic pal.

@@HHH-zz3ip By now there have been numerous genetic studies by top universities and scientists worldwide, which have repeatedly and definitively shown that modern Greeks are one of the oldest populations in Europe and that they have on average up to 75% genetic heritage from the ancient Mycenaeans of 1500 B.C. On the other hand, a very small percentage of modern Turks have considerable Turkic genetic decsent, while most derive from the pre-existing ethnicities in Anatolia, like the Greeks and the Armenians. Modern "Turks" have on average only up to 20% Turkik genetik heritage (some studies have shown as low as 7%!), while self-identifying as Turkish! So, no comparison between modern Greeks and Turks whatsoever pal.
