They can be painted with any paint and in any colour.
The reason I chose Peter for the name on the beads?
I was asked by the very long-running children's BBC TV programme - Blue Peter to show the presenters how to make a quick and simple child-friendly way to make some papier-mâché beads.

The finished necklaces look beautiful... I especially love the dangly one :) I also tend to like the more matte finish myself. I don't do too much with gloss.
