Hildegard of Bingen's Cosmic Egg

In this video I'm taking a closer look at Hildegard of Bingen's Cosmic Egg, which is an image that I have been embroidering for several weeks. I talk a little about her life and music, but focus on the divine vision that Hildegard had about the universe, which is the Cosmic Egg, and the different parts that she saw in her vision.
Unfortunately I could not find translated version of Hildegard's vision on the internet, but the book I read from is the Penguin version, "Hildegard of Bingen: Selected Writings" Translated by Mark Atherton
There are lots of versions of her music, but the two that I drew from for this video are from these two videos:

Thank you! This was terrific. I am sad that I'm old and beyond learning, and instead actually leaning toward dementia. My ridiculous mid-west public education in the 60's and 70's didn't share anything like this. I love to learn new-to-me things.

Another great history lesson! Thank you for this one since it hits home for me. I love that one of the very few female composers I learned about in music history was so much more than a composer.

As a German I was very intrigued by your comprehensive explanation. I’m here because you showed in your current video, that you will be stitching it again. I‘m wondering, am I interpreting too much into it or does it also look like a female reproductive organ! 🧐 I mean the sun as the “pearl” as the most powerful element of this composition. The center as the womb.? 🤷🏻♀️ maybe it’s just me. Nevertheless I really like that piece of art and I will definitely go and learn more about her. Thank you.

Oh yes, it's a vulva, no doubt! HAHA! That's part of what's so great about it, I think. Hildegard also gives us the earliest description of a female orgasm (as far as I know), so I don't think it was an accident. This is my favorite of her pieces, but she has a LOT of others and wrote all sorts of science and medical treatises. She's amazing!

Fascinating! You mentioned that she received permission to illustrate her visions. I assume she got permission from the pope? Why did she need it?

I think permission was too strong of a word. She got support and encouragement from a monk who was the schoolmaster at the monastery. There is a very fine line between a holy mystic and a heretic in the Middle Ages and the side someone landed on depended on their friends. The pope wasn't involved at this point.
