Here is my Hilleberg Akto tent review. The Hilleberg Akto was one of the first true backpacking tents that was a one person tent and a 4 season tent combined. This lightweight tent weighs 1.7kg and costs £605. This solo tent has been used all over the world and has a great reputation for being one of the best backpacking tents out there.
Hilleberg tent quality is outstanding and although this tent is now old, and has seen a lot of use, it still has plenty of life left in it.
Personally, I do believe tent design has come on a lot of the years and there are better options out there including their own Hilleberg Soulo tent. Personally, if I wanted a single pole tent I would probably opt for a more modern design such as the Tarptent Scarp 1, but the Soulo would rule them all.
I'm split on single-pole tents like the Hilleberg Akto backpacking tent. Part of me loves the simplistic design which also means they are lightweight tents. I also love the traditional backpacking tent design too. However, they are tricky to set up perfectly, especially on ground that isn't perfectly flat, and the lower head height can be annoying. I must say though, the vestibule on the Hilleberg Akto is excellent.

This is what they say:
WHEN WE FIRST INTRODUCED the Akto over 20 years ago, we did not know that it would become as popular as it has. Although only slightly heavier than a bivybag, the Akto offers near-luxury, all-season shelter for the solo traveler -lodging that includes a vestibule and a packed size small enough to fit into a side pocket on many packs.
It’s an ideal choice any time you need the lightest weight, all season solo tent, and while it was not designed for extreme use, it has proven itself on extended polar expeditions, and so will stand up well to all conditions. Hikers, climbers, bicycle tourers and sea kayakers alike have embraced its lightweight roominess, and today it is being used in every clime, all over the world. Long distance backpackers especially appreciate having a sturdy, comfortable room of their own at the end of a long day on the trail. Trekkers find it excellent lightweight accommodation insurance for when traditional lodging in far flung places is overcrowded, overpriced, or unavailable. And tall users find it one of the few solo tents available that has enough room.
Full Details:
Kerlon 1200 outer tent fabric and 9mm poles make for a very lightweight yet supremely stable tent.
All season construction: outer tent walls extend to the ground and mesh areas are backed with adjustable fabric panels.
Tunnel construction offers maximum space to weight ratio and is the ideal choice for mobile journeys.
Plenty of room for one occupant and his or her gear.
Linked but separable inner and outer tent for simultaneous pitching.
Basic pitching requires only four pegs in the head and foot end guy lines, and the simple, single-opening, continuous pole sleeve and tensioner system is quick to pitch and remarkably stable. (note: pegging out the four corners provides optimal floor space, venting and overall tent function and is highly recommended.)
The single entrance/single vestibule configuration affords easy access as well as storage space.
An optional footprint covers the entire area of the outer tent, including the vestibules. It connects directly to the tent, and can be left attached during pitching.
The inner tent can be replaced with a Mesh Inner tent (sold separately; see accessories).
The outer and inner tents can be used separately. Pitching the inner tent alone requires optional pole holders (see accessories).

I'm 1,83 and for my morning coffee I sit in the tent and just unhook the top loop of the inner tent, then there is enough headspace and I don't touch the outer tent with my head, no problem. Cooking in bad weather conditions is also possible, this way. I have the ground sheet too. If I want to chill during the day, I just put my sleeping pad in the apsis, so I can nicely look into the nature. With Kerlon 1200, This tent is a reliable mini fortress, which makes me feel save in worst weather conditions. If you know how to handle an akto, and the pain spending almost 700 EUR, it's still the best 1 person tent, which will be your hiking partner for man years, just my humble opinion.

Great review. You confirmed my fears ref height so I'll go for the soulo as a one man option. It will compliment my Kuiu storm star 2p really well. Keep the videos coming mate 🙂

I like the tent, I have just never liked the ceiling height. I can just about get away with it when I'm sitting in the middle but using this tent in the rain when you're spending a lot of time in it is not fun at all. I have got to say I am a bit bias because I prefer free standing tents. However, there are other tents out there such as the Tarptent Scarp 1 that is a similar design but offers more head room and more space for less weight. Personally, I think the Soulo is an awesome tent and I can't recommend it enough as long as you're not too weigh conscious.

I’d like something like that but some price. I got to try out my new msr elixir Tuesday at buachaille etive mor and I’m really happy with that. This is a great channel mate. I went through most of you’re videos last week. Some expensive reviews some cheap etc. Great information for folks. I hope the channel grows for you ✌️

Thanks so much! Two of my mates have the Elixir 2 and they both really rate it. It's also worth noting it's much better in the cold than the more expensive Hubba Hubba NX2.

I think with these types of tents if you just treat them as more of a luxury bivvy than a tent, you'll be much happier with it.

Good thing I’m 167 cm 🙃 . This was perfect during my adventures in Patagonia where I saw a lot of tents got destroyed (flatened) by the insanely strong wind! The only downside is it’s not free-standing. I had trouble using it in those rare campsites where you have to pitch your tent on a wooden platform. Had to find nails to make the tent stand up.

Hi mate , have you or anyone in the comments had issues with the seam above the door vent leaking? The hilleberg akto was my dream tent and i finally managed to get one ,this weekend I put it up to test it and this seam leaked.. pretty badly (you can see this in the video on my channel) I’m really disappointed but as daft as it sounds I still love the tent , iv complained to hilleberg and I was interested to see if this is an issue on all the aktos ? Great video and review mate 👍

You’re not the first, I’ve seen this exact same problem on another channel. I can’t remember which channel but I’m fairly sure it was an easy fix (although you shouldn’t be having to do this in the first place).

@@BackpackingUK yeah iv put more or less the same comment that I put on your video on afew videos for the akto just to see if it’s on them all and I’m starting to get a lot of comments saying the exact same thing Yeah it’s an easy fix but hilleberg put up all there tents for inspection before shipping so if they where to just apply the seam sealer in that stage on all there aktos I think it would be beneficial to there customers and reputation Thanks mate great video 👍

Right on the fence about this tent. Might buy, might not. I have a Soulo BL but looking for something lighter. The reason for the hesitation - Soulo is already feels a little small for me even though I am only 5'9".

I love this tent, but agree with what you said about the size, the other thing is, is how much moisture there is inside of the tent the morning after. Otherwise, it’s a good old tent.

From my experience all one person tents have issues with condensation. 4 season one person tents like this are even worse. However, I would rather have the warmth and a bit of condensation than be awake and freezing cold all night!

I live in Florida USA. It can get extremely hot and humid. What makes this a four season tent? Right now my go to tents out of everything I have is a Litefighter 1 and my Jack Wolfskin Yellowstone. Both have a tarp that is separate from the tent. That being said both tents are almost all screen with a separate rain fly. Your thoughts?
@BackpackingUK
@BackpackingUK 3 жыл бұрын
It’s mainly down to a solid inner mesh and the rain fly comes right down to the ground. There are other things but these are the main differences.
@willek1335
@willek1335 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't bother with 4 season tents in Florida. Too overbuilt. Too humid. To mild. This bad boy is built to withstand 80+ mph winds, as evident by a KZfaq video. A Swede took an Akto to the North Pole.

Mines the same vintage (about 2010) cost about £300 including the footprint. Seems ridiculous with the price these days. Have to say though for 70% of my camping I prefer the Terra Nova Laser comp due to lightness. It is that other 30% in the winter when I wouldn't want anything other than the Hilleberg.

I've got an old Lazer Lite that weighs just 1kg. It's a similar size for far less weight but the build quality of the Hilleberg is in a different league. I agree, the Lazer is good for better weather and a Hilleberg for adverse weather.

Had one.... Bought in a sale for £440....Used it twice.... Leaked.... Argued with Ray Mears store (told me to use seam seal, on a £600 tent!!).... Eventually gave me a replacement tent...... Never used it....... Sold it during covid for £500 locally.... Bought a msr 1 man nx.... 1.3kg.....not 4 seasons but I don't camp in mid winter. With a foot print the Akto is nearly 2kg...not that light. Akto was good in the wind though... Didn't budge.... But the worse tent I ever used in summer for condensation..... Soaked inside. Good luck!
