Himalayan 450 Weight Reduction: Drop 11 kg By Spending Zero Money

The idea is simple - build a bike that works for my usage - rally-style fast off-road riding.
Over the next few weeks, I will play around with the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 by following some basic principles - lighter, more power, better tyres, brakes and suspension with a riding triangle that is tailored for the rider.
In this video, we focus on some basic weight reduction. And there's a lot that can come off the bike.
Here's what we took off:
Rear rack: 1915 grams
Saree guard: 1020 grams
Centre stand: 2095 grams
Tool kit: 620 grams (but we put it back later)
Chain guard: 205 grams
Rear footpegs: 260 grams
Front footpegs: 550 grams
Mirrors: 890 grams - 70 grams = 820 grams
Front cage: 3350 grams
Front number plate: 210 grams
Front fender: 475 grams
Total weight removed from the bike: 10.7 kg

Abhinav : Now, we are going to remove the engine and gearbox from the bike, and the weight that comes off is 35-40 kilos, now the bike weights 100kgs, now the bike is completely modified and will have much better performance....

No no, we keep the engine. And as you can see the chain set is connected to the rear wheel and front wheel is free so, we are going to remove the front wheel and we will just wheelie from here onwards.

Inspiring. Was worried about 195 kg wet weigh 17 L tank, but now, seems it can be dropped down to 175 to 180 with 12 to 13 L petrol, which would be AMAZING. Thanks for taking the initiative.

Nice video Abhinav. Even 20 years ago, round about 7-10 kilos is all we could shed from our 500s removing all the tin work. 196 kilos - 10.7 (round off to 11) is still 185 kilo bike. Not 170. Unless you plan to run it without fuel.

I'm talking dry weight here. Won't run on trails with 17 litres in the tank. Maybe 5-7. So, to keep it simple, just focused on dry weight. Of course ready to ride it will be heavier.

Wet doesn’t mean only Fuel.. engine oil 2 litres and coolant 1 litres will itself weights more than 3 kilos and fuel of 5 Litres is another 3 kgs at least. soo please don’t miss lead the viewers. PS: you can’t run a vehicle dry. Soo for practical purpose please mention wet weight. Talking about dry weight is like talking about Ex show room price. Practically you can’t own vehicle at Ex show room price and can’t run vehicle with dry weight. Now peace

@@mallelli99 how is anyone being misled when the first thing I say in the video is that the bike is 181 kg dry. Wet weight will always vary since I don't intend to ride this with a full tank of fuel. So, the constant figure here is the dry weight. Anyone smart enough can add the fuel, engine oil and coolant weight to it.

@@mallelli99 Practically speaking, if the bike were to be taken to a trail with only 7 litres of fuel, that means you are carrying 10 litres less than maximum. 10 litres of fuel equal 7.5 to 8 kg. That is the weight saving with fuel alone that can be realistically achieved as per Abhinav's plan. You can calculate total weight with zero fuel easily too. As I understand, dry weight is fixed according to the components on the bike. Wet weight varies as fuel is consumed. While we would all prefer to see the reduction in maximum (wet) weight, Abhinav seems to be focusing on the constant weight which is dry weight.

Nice video Abhinav, the new Himalayan has a huge potential to be close to the perfect ADV tourier in our country. But the only major issue that I felt when test-riding the vehicle was the weight of the motorcycle. It was a little too much for me, but some may not think of it the same way. I loved the idea of stripping it down to make it weigh less than the stock motorcycle, and the best part out of the whole lot was the saree guard. I don't see the necessity of it being a standard in our country as hardly women drape sarees these days and travel along as a pillion wearing it.

I had planned to do pretty much this, maybe not the mirrors. I travel very lean and my total luggage is around 12 kgs out of which the tubes znd tools to change them is around 3-4 kgs. This is for my xpulse. So once i get the Him 452 withthe tubeless spoke rims, lot of weight from my luggage will go. And i carry just 1 tail bag so the rear rack also is of no use to me.

You are forgetting to remove the pistons from the engine.... Then air filter.., fuel gage etc....

possibly - Lighter wheels, lighter exhaust or Aluminum sprockets (and sprocket sizes if tuning required), But most importantly, one just needs 10 to 12 L of petrol (which would save 4 to 5 Kgs) on top of this weight loss.

Some more ideas, in case they were not considered: - replace the plastic fork protection by soft one made of neoprene - replace the wet battery by a Lithium one - check for a light weight chain/sproket kit You still have the chain guide installed, which might not be mandatory but I would bring back the chain guard for safety reason. And BTW "kg" sounds a bit strange for a European. "kilogram" is much more known 😉

Abhinav ji, I've a out of the context question,.. What is the seat height of the motorcycle after installing the rally seat? Actually, I'm planning to buy a himalayan with rally kit for me. But the main problem is, I'm just 5'8". Can a person of my height flat foot on a rally spec Himalayan? Please answer. And if there is any embargo on you then please make a detailed video on the RALLY SPEC HIMALAYAN after the embargo is over.

So much fun experiencing your posts from here in New Hampshire ~ USA ~. Not gonna lie. I bought a pack of cigarettes at the local package store here. Two Young Indians here on visa. I just said "Royal Enfield" and out came their wallets with pictures of (smaller) "Royal Enfield" motorcycles. We talked for some time and I did buy the cigarettes 🤮. Anyway, I told them about have purchased a Himalayan 411 (2021 with 3000m) like new. I then got the deposit back when finding the gear ratio was low and not so good on the road @ 65 mph. The bike definitely looks much better without the cage. It is a heavy bike for a 450cc. 11kg reduction would be huge and you would definitely feel the difference I think.

Also the Swing arm is cast iron steel something, so if cost is not an issue one can get customized Aluminum alloy KTM type to reduce weight , also fuel tank is metal if one can Fabricate it to Fiber - Plastic u'll save significant weight😎

Motourenn footpegs. I can't develop accessories since I am not a fabricator or even into the automotive business. I am just a person who rides bikes for fun.

Hello bro very happy new you to you n entire family , you tube family , i rode this bike on launch at Saket Showroom it's a wonderful bike , slipper cluch and assist is very smooth . One issue is tubed spoke tyres same as older version , will RE launch tubeless Spoke tyres

I think RE designed it as a touring machine that goes on occasional off roads than a pure off road machine. Yeah shredding weight helps off the road , but on highways weight helps to keep the bike on track at higher speeds.

Amazing! I think weight can be further reduced with lighter sprockets, also especially with SS Full system exhausts without the heavy unnecessary catcon. I hope Hero guys are watching, with the Xpulse 400/450, hope they can keep an eye on the weight. Considering how heavy the XMR is, compared to it's much lighter rival, the R15 (20kg difference), I don't have high hopes here though, they maybe able to prove me wrong.

The absense of the lower fender will splash mud and rocks on the radiator and eventually can damage it. How did you not consider it before removing it?

A simple radiator guard should be enough to deal with that. Then again, that's metal while the mudguard is plastic. Interested to see the rationale behind this

Went with what is available currently. May do a wire mesh radiator guard later or a high fender with a longer lip at the rear that covers the radiator to some extent.

NO radiator guard stops mud clogging up the radiator which in turn dries hard and leads to overheating. At most I would just have cut off the front of the mudguard in front of the bracket and then raised it on brackets 1-2cm to give more tyre clearance. The removal of chainguard and mirror replacement with those small mirrors would not be legal in the EU and many other countries.
