Hinderer is a real production knife company while Strider is more of a boutique knife company. Strider are cool knives but I always thought there usefulness for most common knife tasks is questionable. I have had many high end, mid-end and lower end knives, but the SNG (and maybe Emerson) is the only knife I have owned that I thought was significantly overpriced. That being said, I would buy another SNG immediately if I found one available. Also, the only knife I ever regret selling is the Strider SJ-75.

I prefer a little bit of knife sticking out of the pocket to grab a hold of anywhere especially better than the Benchmade style deep carry with the screws underneath catching the pocket, that's annoying.

Both brands make wonderfully engineered knives, although between the two I’ve always loved the design of the Hinderer XM-18 (especially the standard 3.5). That said, I’d never own any of these, as I’m left handed. While I’d love a left-handed XM-18 3.5, all lefties know how to use right-hand frame/liner-locks by necessity, so it’s not really required. The issue is, all knives shown here are strictly right hand carry only, and that completely rules them out (left hand clip XM-18 scales exist, but the knife is already expensive enough without forking out another $100 for another handle scale). Lack of any form of left handed accessibility if the main reason my favourite of the production knife “holy trinity” is CRK, by far, and my grail knife is a Sebenza 31 left-hand.

I agree with much of what was said here, however I do have to bring up the fact that if I'd need to pry something I'd probably feel more comfortable prying with a Spanto 3.5" over an SnG with just about any blade shape... The tantos strider make are cool but the tip is so fine and comes out quite far, that i'm quite sure It'd pop off without much effort. The spearpoints are pretty thin and again have very fine tip and the spine gets really thin at the tip. -- Maybe the 3/4 grinds of a strider would be better suited.... But let me stop rambling... I LOVE my striders and they dominate my collection BY FAR - But I do have a gen6 spanto 3.5" hinderer and absolutely love it as well... I also wouldn't say the strider is more ergonomic - I think they are both equally comfortable. I dont know, the blade of the hinderer just looks beefier / chunkier than of those of the striders.... so for "hard use" meaning - borderline abusing the knife... doing tasks that a knife shouldn't like prying or scraping... I'd imagine a Spanto 3.5" would hold up way better and take more abuse than a Strider would... Again - I do love my striders and my collection is basically all Strider! Also, I'd say without a doubt cutting tasks are better performed by striders as they are far thinner behind the edge than hinderers are! -- So it basically depends on your needs of the day... Good vid as usual.

Question about the xm-18...when I screw in the body screws, the show side (flat screw side), continues to turn. Only one of them tightens all the way, the other two keep spinning. I've tried holding a piece of rubber against the flat side but I can't apply enough pressure to keep it from moving. I put blue loctite on the screws and get them as tight as I can. Is this an issue with Hinderer's?

Well played lol. At least you’re a good sport. Word from the ranch is if they catch any loctite on body screws during warranty work...it’s getting sent back and it’s the owners responsibility to get them apart. That said, try using a bit of duct tape on the back side to hold the bit from spinning. Maybe that will help it grab something.

Great video. I own both an xm-18 3.5 and strider SNG, along with a sebenza 21. The 3 knives i could never sell, and by far my favorites. To me I could not place one above the other, just depends what you care about. The highest durability in general and ability to have bearings belongs to the XM. SNG and sebenza 21 are tied for thinnest behind the edge and best lockup (I am partial to strider and sebenza 21 titanium to steel lock, stainless lock inserts can slip where a little stick from a titanium lockface feels more secure to me.) If I take the sebenza out of the equation I'd say xm-18 wins on modularity, custom parts and the strongest construction in general. SNG wins in cutting power, near 10/1000 thinner behind the edge on my two examples. (My SNG measures behind the edge exactly the same as my LUDT. Impressive considering spins thickness). On the SNG, the 2/3rd aluminum construction botheres me a bit in terms of durability. If I had to pick a favorite to save my life, I'd be dead for sure. Now when it comes to makers themselves, that's an easy favorite. Hinderer is by far my favorite maker, followed by Chris Reeve and strider would be further down on the list. Strider only makes one knife that interests me, they are difficult to obtain and they don't offer much variability and virtually no aftermarket parts for customizing. Not to mention the other stuff.

I love the look of Hinderer and feel. But that flat grind is shit. If he thinks his knives are the best and worth 450us, but any knife with a hollow grind will out cut a hinderer anyday. Knives are ment to cut n slice. If you need a chopper, buy a swiss axe lol. I will buy a xm18 when he makes a hollow grind blade option.

This is an excellent comprehensive review of these 2 incredible knife brands. I think each has specific advantages over the other. I am a fan of both brands and use both the Strider SnG and SMF as well as the Hinderer XM- 18 3.5" and Full Track. I agree with Strider having an advantage in terms of ergos over Hinderer, but Hinderer has an advantage of ease of disassembly over Strider. I have taken all of my Hinderers apart to lubricate them but have not had to take apart any of my Striders for any reason until recently. In order to take out the pivot screw without damaging it, it is a good idea to use the specific pivot tool meant for it. Even with the tool, it is necessary to apply heat from a soldering iron to break the red Loctite that they use with each knife.

Metal Complex This is going to be a pretty long overly critical post. The gen 4 carbidized lock was perfect nothing wrong with it besides what’s in people’s heads. The lockbar insert made them have to what feels like double the lockbar tension and with the sharp lockbar it’s not ideal. Plus the lock insert screw is an eyesore on the knife. The nylon washers is also a stigma they’re smoother than the bearings in my gen 6 don’t need oiled and the blade stops off set any stability disadvantage from having them. With nylon you’d basically never have to dissemble the knife it’s a genius design in philosophy. Neroknives has a good video on the advantages of nylon they’re better than you gave them credit they’re actually better in dirt that PB go watch his test. Yes you could swap the pivot around but the problem with the tri way is it’s pretty much made to work on the bearings I’ve heard tons of guys having problems with taking out the bearings and putting in the washers. I’ve not tried it on my own knife bc I don’t want the frustration. Couple more nitpicks there’s a sharp edge on the lock face now next to insert you can feel sometimes if you gripping hard and your hand is sliding down I have the fullered spear too so I’d bet that sharp spot is on yours too. Lastly the stonewash on my gen 4 looks better than the 6 looks like they switched to a finer finish
