Mere mami Dusari cast ki thi, unki shadi ko April me 2024 me 14 years ho jate , but when my mama died the village head did not allow us to do his ceremony in his own village... Only 50 people were allowed & they were very adamant that Mami should not sit in any rituals... & we have to accept all their demands, Why because everyone was worried samaj ladkiyon ki shadi nahi hone dega... i hate this samaj system they never come to help when in need, but will be frist to dictate how and what should be done...

I agree with most of the things said here that Hindu temples should be freed and birth based caste criteria for Priesthood should be done away with. My only disagreement is that the State cannot enforce a ban on Birth based discrimination. It should entirely for the temples and people to decide. The State has no business. These people are talking as if the Indian State will be bestowing a favour upon Hindus by freeing temples. No! It is a right of Hindus to have their temples back. If the Indian State wants to ban casteism, then why apply it only on Hindu temples and not on Ashraf clergy in Mosques and caste based Churches? If the Indian State wants to encourage caste egalitarianism, then it should offer incentives to temples instead of punishments. Offer some lucrative schemes to Hindu temples to be free of Caste discrimination instead of banning which takes away the freedom of Hindus to run their temples on their own terms. Why no carrots but only sticks for Hindus. On the other hand, the Indian State goes on giving funds and concessions to Churches and Mosques without any conditions. How is this fair? Recently, Nikhil Mehra was on this podcast discussing Halal. Halal system is clearly discriminatory on the basis of religion and Birth-based caste but the conclusion was that State was trying to solve a socio-economic, market related problem through legal means and should refrain from legal intervention. Here the conclusion is that State can legally intervene to remove a societal caste discrimination problem from Hindu temples and the society has to accept it to get back something that should not have been snatched away from them in the first place. Just Wow!! Sheer intellectual inconsistency. The State is over zealous to interfere into and reform the Hindu society, not needed at times, but it will not even touch evil rituals and practices of other communities. Either this is institutionalized discrimination against Hindus or soft bigotry of low expectations against Non-Hindus or both. From my understanding, this is the premise you all have precisely build your arguments upon. This is implicit moral and cultural relativism which incidentally you keep opposing.

To those arguing that priesthood is a right for Brahmins , consider a few things. You expect reservation to end so entry to unis can be based on merit, but don’t expect the same for priesthood? Why does any group have a ‘right’ to priesthood when it should be an earned privilege and a calling? Traditionally Brahmins were poor and had to live off the alms of others, but today people are talking like it is a business that is owed to one community. Consider also that if the majority of Hindus are excluded from Hindu priesthood and temples, why would they want to stay in a religion they’re not considered equal in? I’ve gone back and forth on this topic, bc i understand the need for maintaining traditions. I’m much less concerned with who gets to be a priest than how well the priesthood and traditions are maintained. Currently there is massive corruption at temples. My own family has been fighting some temples for re-ownership of certain rituals and aspects so they can be done properly but it is an up hill battle. There definitely is an argument for family-based ritual ownership bc it forces someone to be responsible for it - however we ourselves are in this position bc in the previous generation, several grandparents didn’t care about the rituals and we’ve now been fighting to get that back so it can be performed properly. I would be happy if this fight wasn’t just between a huge temple/corrupt politicians…vs 2 members of my family and instead between Hindus and the corrupt board. Bc this very well known temple isn’t just my family’s, it is OUR collective heritage

Appreciate this discussion. Agree with the basic premise as well. One of the reasons why there is push back from activists from Tamil Nadu is because of the pressure even privately held temples have from the state government on changing traditions including requiring prayers and puja be conducted in Tamil irrespective of how the deity was consecrated and what the rules of doing puja in the temple traditionally are. The govt require priests be from all castes. They also routinely push their way into garba grahas and step on elevated places in the temple the priests attempt to stop them from being in during the puja. Because of the level of pressure on temples in Tamil Nadu to change traditions there's probably a natural defense mechanism to push back against anyone trying to set so called secular rules for temples. More communication without name calling is required to resolve this and not disrupt the whole movement. Also an option should be provided as Abhijit mentioned to request for exception from any temple specific rules based on documented proof since the establishment of the temple or at least spanning two millennia. Also these rules could be specific to temples currently under govt control and not apply to privately held temples as long as they don't take public donations through donation boxes. There are bound to be tons of traditions that we don't even know about and it's best to start off being liberal about providing exceptions as long as they are not blatantly discriminatory based on birth. Hope a consensus is achieved.

Very good discussion. While caste based discrimination should definitely not be tolerated, the caveat seems to being overstated. There are already existing laws in place to prevent it. And to some level, it will be better to trust the Hindu community to punish those engaging in discrimination as we saw in the Karpatri Maharaj issue. It is always better than legislating these things.

Are there hereditary reservations for any other casta? For example, weavers or fishermen? If there are, there could be a reasonable argument be made for people who serve as temples purohita. The deeper question is not of equal 'rights', but, what system/who will preserve the sampradaya with fidelity and respect to dharma. Work back from that requirement and design a system that will best serve that requirement. You can't mandate a new system based on leftwing understanding or 'rights'. Every mandir should be able to promote local sampradaya, the same way a modern plant like the SGPC can over gurudwara.

Please talk to more learned people on this topic as it needs a wider discussion. E.g. sampradayas such as Chitrapur Saraswat where the very identity is drawn from the math? Wouldn’t it be important that that sampradaya continues to manage it and the priests and Swamiji need to be from that sampradaya. Note that all the people in the region worship there and participate actively in the festivals. There is no restriction on entry. The financial support comes from the Chitrapur Saraswat community worldwide. Maybe Shrikant Talageri uncle can offer some wisdom on this topic. Thank you 🙏

A wrong premise in this discussion is the assumption that all major temples were under the patronage of rulers. This is not entirely true. This is true for temples built by kings. Basically the temples were under the patronage of whoever built it. In the south of India there is a concept of family deity that is associated with a specific family and the family temple is for the family deity and for the family's ancestors. In such temples there are typically traditions that allow or require certain privileges and responsibilities for descendants of a family. Like certain parts of a ritual have to be performed by people of that family because it is for the ancestor and not the deity. Or certain types of food after being offered in the puja has to be eaten by descendants of that family because it was offered to the ancestor. Over eight to nine generations in a village almost all people of a caste end up related or "family". This is where a lot of the issues of people trying to prevent people from other caste from entering into their caste's temple on certain days or certain occasions comes up. This should ideally not be the case for large temples under the government. However this is likely to become an issue among relatively smaller temples in villages and a balanced solution should be derived for this issue instead of an approach of "this is all superstition and illogical". Even if it is superstition and illogical let it die a natural death instead of pushing for it and antagonizing people who have been holding on to that tradition and taking care of that temple for ages.

In temples,priesthood and temple administration are both different, the priesthood is only there to follow the traditional poojas and other karmas, the administration (so called dharmakarta) were from the surrounding villages. It was the adminstration that handled money and priests the poojas. There are strict rules to follow for becoming a priest, as long as they follow that i feel its ok for any hindu to become a proest
@pranavbhaskarjha9892
@pranavbhaskarjha9892 8 ай бұрын
So the misunderstanding is Jati is not birth based, it’s lifestyle based. Like Harsh said, if priest selection requires them to be from a lineage and even if the training has to begin at age 5, it’s okay as long as the criteria for eligibility does not discriminate based on Jati. Thing is when someone joins that lineage they lose their original jati identity essentially. And historically even the local jati such as a Malyali Brahmin is a lifestyle, so a child from any Jati can be adopted into it and following this Dincharya they would become a Malayali Brahmin, hence it isn’t birth based discrimination. On temple entry if it’s okay to stop Non-Hindus to enter a temple which is for Hindus. It should also be okay to stop people who don’t belong to the Jati X entering in a temple for Jati X. Since, Hinduism is a very broad term, and for a Hindu their closest dharma is to their Guru/Jati lineage. So there can be temples that are for all Hindus, and there can also be temples for selected group. Again the previous paragraph logic still applies. Even if by birth a Children is of any religion/jati if they were adopted in a Jati they lose their previous identity and will not be disallowed entry in a temple meant for the Jati they are now part of.

According to pew survey, these Social degradation is more in these states. Also, Honour killing is not just one country or cultural phenomenon. It's prevelent in South Asia and Middleast. Also you need to read about the untouchability as well. It's still practiced in Yemen, Tibbet, Korea, Japan and Africa. Europe has got rid of because of rapid economic development, industrialisation and Social revolution. That's why their society is sensitive about the Racism and honour killing practice. Let's there be rule: Once person become temple priest, he/she is longer belong to past caste anymore. He/she must reject the past & now be called as "Brahmin" or "Pundit" or whatever the name is for that temple priest. That person who has certain caste, must die & have new identity according to that temple. It is basic rule when someon becomes Brahmin or Rishi. That person is no more what was he/she yesterday. We have "Dwija" means twice born or new born. Dwija is no more what he/she past. So, here, anyone from any caste became whatever Brahmin, Kshatriya reject the past. He/she may have history of past, as identification, he/she must reject the past.

Such logics, i really pity on all three of you. Birth, Birth.....say it you targeting Brahmins....doing tokenism won't help. The whole conceptualisation of the discussion is that, the current system by Pujaris dominated by Brahins are not working and discriminatory. 1. Look like , basically the discussion is for reservation in Temples? 2. Pujaris, pandits needed to be trained in "aagam" shastras, period. 3. Rules of the tempels as institution should be followed, whether you as a person like it or not (women entry, varna entry, bla bla). 4. When you discuss laws for a Mandir, you do involve the state/admin/courts, so that not freedom. 5. Anything else, is interference.

Yes, these need much more thought. Why aren’t we calling for proper studies from IIMs or IITs on the financial and other issues? Some key questions. 1. How do you manage inherent contradictions of an Abrahamic mindset vs a Dharmic one? For example, can you secularize the priests? If you select a priest that is Sep ifically a Pujari in the temple, how do you ensure that the Temple and the devatas aradhana is followed properly? For example, a Pujari coming from a strongly nonvegetarian family is more likely not to be a vegetarian. That detracts from the image of the temple and the devata I. E defiles it in the believers perception. How about the temple cooks? Would the temple Bhakthas like it if the Prasadam is prepared nonauthentically? How about the temple barbers who are employed to give hair offerings? Would the sanctity be maintained? Can these issues be amicably resolved and managed by the Mathas or Ashramas?

Ironically the discussion also went to ‘hindutva free loaders’ and I’m wondering how kushal and abhijit are not the same when they can’t even sit with complete focus for a topic of such importance to Hindus but will monetise the same video for money and use it for fame as well.

Savarkar won but posthumously. Karpatriji need not win or lose. He was, is and shall remain right! Heard, Abhijit gave up smoking and turned vegetarian. Why? breathlessness? bp, anxiety etc?. life is simple. It doesnt discriminate. Similarly, varna is a natural phenomenon and not man made. Harsh understands this very well. So let Acharyas decide. But yes, society should have right to ask them about 'shastra' behind particular 'tradition'. If you are doubting tradition then why save it! Cant you even ask questios? Well, ask right questions to right individual. You can not ask Abhijit to design a rocket launcher( he very well might be knowing the complex equations but still), you cant ask Harsh about plastic surgery and can not ask Kushal about fluid dynamics! Hence birth based or otherwise, sampraday acharyas should have final say in this matter! They must be answerable to seekers like you three. Also unless qualified, people like you can not , should not, must not have authority to form a rule or pass law in this matter.
