The Hinged bookstand is a project that has been around for hundreds of years. it was first written about by Andre Roubo, but in modern times it was popularised by Roy Underhill in the WoodWright shop. it is a treat project for beginners as there are so many skills to learn in making it. Form resawing, and chisel work to fret sawing and carving. Give this one a try and see just how your skills increase ad you make it.

It's called a Rihal, a classic book stand to recite holy books in Asia. Originally from India, popularized by muslims before the middle ages. In fact muslims around the world still use it today to recite Quran while seating on floor (the wobbly one you found is one of them, a cheap one obviously). You've made is fantastic one, there's always new things I learn in your videos. Great job!

I just made one like this on Saturday, sized it for a tablet computer. Took me about two hours, all hand tools. I didn't do the drilling and keyhole saw thing, just made sure that the saw cuts met up with the chiseling at the hinges (you will see sawdust come out of the hinges). Then tapped some wedges into the top and bottom. It made a frightening kind of "crack" when it split open but worked out fine. Only thing I did differently was I cut the front leg shorter than the back to make it stand more "upright". Thanks James for all you do!

I have really enjoyed watching your journey with hand tool wood working. I am a fan, subscribe and considering more of a commitment. Your videography captures the main highlights and I really enjoy your work. One question comes to mind with your love of the homemade boiled linseed oil. You apply with your hands which is great. When you clean up the extra, what precautions do you take to ensure there are no fires started and such? Thank you and peace be with you.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 жыл бұрын
I actually have a few videos on boiled linseed oil safety and I have one demonstrating it catching on fire. Some people will tell you to put it in water and that will pause the reaction but as soon as you pull it out of the water it will start again. The safest thing would be to go ahead and burn it. But oddly enough boiled linseed oil rags only catch on fire and very specific circumstances and it takes a lot to meet those conditions. Unfortunately the perfect condition is a loosely wadded up rag in the bottom of a trash can. It needs to have enough oxygen for the reaction to take place quickly but not enough airflow to cool the rag down. My preferred method is to lay the rag out flat on the floor and wait for it to cure. Usually about 24 to 48 hours. At that point you can throw it away and be perfectly safe.

Can you make it using power tools please , with a video.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately there is no power tool that can make this. That is one drawback to power tools they can not make 3 denominational acute corners like the ones needed to make the hinge. you could get close with a fine router bit but the joint would end up being sloppy.

Nicely done, man. Question: instead of using the stabbing motion with the short saw blade, would it be easier to use a coping saw? That is assuming you had one with a deep enough throat. I know you pretty much followed what Roy did in his video.
@McFlysGarage
@McFlysGarage 5 жыл бұрын
I need to check out his second video but I bet a scroll saw would also work if you can keep the cut straight
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The problem with that is you would have to use an even bigger hole to get in the coping saw blade. I played with that but it did not look as good in the end to me. I thought of useing a jewler's saw. As I could do it with a smaller hole but it would be a lot slower cut.
@ajonestx
@ajonestx 5 жыл бұрын
@@McFlysGarage I've started to use a fret saw for mine. It takes a smaller hole, and you can get a pretty thin cut. I've done it with the hacksaw too, it just takes me a little longer and I couldn't get it as straight as James did. I even tried to plunge cut with a jigsaw once(don't do that).

I just went back and watched Roy's video on PBS, and he maintains the circular hinge, where you created a straight 45 deg. cut on same: did you find this approach to be faster?, or have another advantage?
@WoodByWright

I talk about it in the second video a bit more but to make it short. I just like the look of the flat bottom when open rather the the round. The round is a bit harder but they are the same in function.
