Hip drop happens if you have weakness or tightness in the hip and lower trunk. This can make walking very difficult.
In this video you will gain an in-depth understanding of all the posture and walking mistakes that can make this problem worse
4 most common causes of hip drop
1. Weak hip abductors
2. Tight hip adductors
3. Tight hip flexors
How do you fix hip drop?
Here are my favorite exercises to strengthen this area
1. Seated hip abduction
2. Sit to stand with band
3. Side-lying hip abduction
4. Side-lying leg lift with rotation
5. Kneeling hip abduction
6. Standing hip abduction
7. Standing lateral toe taps
8. Lateral step up
9. Monster walk

Thank you so much! I am a stroke survivor and have regressed a lot after 8 years of inconsistent exercise . This a very well done explanation on strengthening pelvic alignment and improving the ability to walk with less instability.( I have pelvic alignment issues due to scoliosis). I have been frustrated trying to do "hip drops" as explained elsewhere. The exercises herein provide a progressive method to build strength that can lead to better hip alignment. Progress, not perfection...but, progress.

I have a severe case of a rotated leg and on the same side my hip drops. When I sit or lay down my whole right side sags which has led to really bad muscle pain in my hip/abdomen/groin. It’s literally disabled me because I have no stability on my right side, and my body is so tight that I can barely move some days. I showed how my leg just flops all the way over and described all the same symptoms that you said in the rotated leg video to doctors and physical therapist for the last year and have yet to do one internal rotating exercise or make ANY progress at all for a whole year!!!!!!!!!! I watched the rotated leg video 2 weeks ago and do the exercises every day and have already made some progress! My brain and leg are starting to remember how to move normally again, and I can’t wait to be able to walk, run or do anything for that matter lol. Thank you for helping me change my life by giving me hope and the ability to heal and finally start getting better.

Great routine. I suffered a spinal cord injury which damaged my proprioceptors. I have a hard time locating the muscles needed for certain movements and my brain has to re-learn the info. Your program has helped me 'locate' some muscles and my hip drop is improving. I'm a nurse and should know this stuff but it's hard to see it when you're in it. Thank you for the great video.

Hello Dr. Tobias, thank you so much for your videos. They are helping me in my rehab. I had a stroke one year and three months. 10/03/2019. I was in a nursing home for rehab. February 10 I was sent home because the pandemic was approaching to New York. I was aware about my surroundings, and I never lost my consciousness. I couldn’t start any therapy so I stayed in my house for a long time, without therapy. My arm and leg got stiffed to move. The paying was terrible, the my insurance denied my insurance cover, really was confusing and painful, but I never lost hope. Some one told me to watch You Tube and I found hopes that I would walk again and move my arm again. Dr. Tobias I found you here, I follow you videos every day and I do your exercises and I found the real life, thank you for all advices,, Jay from New York.

Thanks Dr. Tobias. Excellent video. I am several years post-stroke. I ride a modified recumbent trike for exercise/hobby. When pedaling, my knee on the involved side falls inward. Is this a result of the hip weakness you're talking about?
@rehabhqofficial
@rehabhqofficial 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and the great question!! Hip weakness is one reason this might happen. Also, leaning more to your stronger leg might also cause this. But really you should get in to see a physical therapist. Having bad form with a repetitive motion like cycling might cause some injuries down the road. But keep up the great work!!

Thanks for watching! These are excellent questions. This particular muscle group is critical for walking and for maintaining your balance when standing on one leg. Whether you are an elite level athlete, weekend jogger, or recovering from a hip replacement, this should be a muscle that you continue to do to maintain "peak performance". I hope this helps!!

generally speaking, lateral and anterior approaches tend to have significant tightness in the hip flexors and yes, weakness in the abductors. I posted a video today that might help with the strengthening aspect: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtR8lstjvKvJcn0.html.
