This was what my husband and I always called our song. First waltz we ever danced and we got married three weeks later. That was 39 years ,3 kids ,7 grands and 3 businesses that have provided for all of us and then some. Every time I hear it I feel all gooey inside. Thanks. There is also a cover done by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and that was our favorite to dance to.

Thanks PJ, I'd forgotten this song ever existed. In a other life, I had a stint as an alcohol counselor at an Alcohol Receiving/ Detox Center. Talk about revolving door therapy! About 99% never stayed for the 6 week in house treatment. They were there for a mandated 72 hours that included meals, one on one counseling, and a couple AA meetings. But, they were sober when they left! They were totally different when sober

Great singer, love this song. First time heard it, Sammy Davis Jr, and he danced to it. Then the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band another awesome country/folk version.

I was privileged to see Jerry Jeff Walker live in 2016 when be opened for Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band in Frisco, Texas. His mobility was limited and be sat thru most of his show, but he still sang beautifully.

Wow, gonzo country from the 70’s, or as Steven Fromholz called it, The great progressive music scare. What a rabbit hole to ho down. I could suggest several Austin / Texas musicians from this era, but I’ll be content to see where you go as you travel down this path. You do need to listen to Jerry Jeff’s album Viva Terlingua. It’s a timeless classic.

I fell in love with this song because it is about real people and their lives. Mr. Bojangles is probably long gone, as is Jerry Jeff, but they will live forever with this song and story of this man's life. The part about losing his dog, his companion for many years, tears me up. It shows the sensitivity of the lyrics and how much feeling was put in this song.

So happy to see this particular video where Jerry Jeff's voice had that full range of expression and when you reviewed Guy Clark's "Desperados Waiting for a Train" I noted that I first heard it sung by Jerry Jeff Walker. Both singers died so recently and I'll miss stories of how one would call the other with a new song he wanted to share. A favorite part of my country songwriter voyage! Thanks for your great analysis!

Most "reaction" reviewers woulda stepped in within the first :60... The whole SONG is what it's about. I'm a subscriber now. Jerry Jeff wrote very few "great" songs, but this one made him enough money to record TWO live/semi-live albums, which then made HIM famous. The band (mainly out of sight here & not playing much) was outrageous... Jerry Jeff set the stage in Austin for all the "outlaw" country that was to follow, including Willie. Loved by cowboys and longhairs alike.

Many people have done this song, but Jerry Jeff lived it, and then wrote it. Another great Jerry Jeff song is Charlie Dunn. There are so many. LA Freeway, Redneck Mother (written by Ray Wylie Hubbard), etc. For years, I thought this was about Bojangles Robinson, but Jerry Jeff put that rumor to bed. It was just some street dancer that was in the drunk tank with him.

Hey Man, Loving your channel, you should react to some Gram Parsons. He was a pioneer in the Alt-country sound, and influenced a lot that came after him, check out, Return of the Grievous angel, streets of Baltimore, or That's all it took. he was a great artist who was taken too young. Rest in peace Gram

The comments got me thinking. I generally prefer the original to the cover. There are occasions where the cover takes the song to a completely new place - Chris Stapleton did that wit Tennessee Whiskey - in which case it has to treated as a new piece of work. Of course, I prefer singer songwriters to all others.

Lemonade: This song was inspired from a night in the New Orleans drunk tank. Jerry Jeff made a lot of money off royalties over the years, especially from Sammy Davis Jr. who took it up as his personal theme song. This is a very good version of the song IMO.

Texas is a big place and it makes a big rabbit hole. I wouldn't do it as a reaction, because not many people know of him and the video is long, but one of my favorite Texas country blues artists is Gatemouth Brown. You might enjoy this video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNmVqLiqupaalIE.html. I think country and blues are sprouts off the same root.

This is a whale of a song. JJW deserves a lot of credit for writing it and the story itself. I enjoyed this performance, particularly the restraint he showed, IMO, not letting the pace of it to get faster as it went along. I have found other versions, especially the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s rendition, to be more emotional or tug harder at the heartstrings. I think the difference was enunciation. The 2 lines about the dog dying and after 20 years he still grieves - I could see that they impacted you but you would have needed a handkerchief or a couple of Kleenex with some of the other versions. I’m not a big fan of Sammy Davis, Jr.’s version but it is very popular.
