A huge fan of Donna Summer, Selena was. I’m watching this with tears streaming down my face. I spent many nights during the later ‘90s on the road crews for several of Q Productions’s acts including dear friend Pete Astudillo, who wrote the Selena songs Ricky Vela didn’t write and put out six brilliant albums of his own, a talented singer in his own right who did write most of his own songs as well, and I had the honor of putting down many a Bud Light on the “Nobody You Know” bus, her first tour bus. It’s a matter of reverence and yet celebration to be welcomed on that bus and I wouldn’t trade all that hard work and all those nights for a damn thing. Pete and several other of the Dinos, accordion player Johnny Saenz and keyboardist Danny Fernandez absolutely welcomed me into the fold. I’ve had the pleasure with Mr. Quintanilla several times but only on the phone. Very focused and professional man. I remember walking into the living room the evening of March 31, 1995 with Entertainment Tonight yammering from the tube. I remember Bob Goen’s tone as he reported the horrible events of that day and I remember my knees just giving out from under me. I dropped to my knees and caught myself before I fainted and went face first. Literally. Anyway, I joined IATSE about five years after the movie was made or I probably would have served as a grip at least on the New Mexico unit. Hell, I’d have done it for free if I could have gotten out there just to honor her. I can tell you there’s a 2nd assistant director who works mainly here in NM called Beatiz, who spent her first day as a PA on a web pilot I wrote and produced. I pretty much got her her first actual job as an office PA on Captain Fantastic, (Viggo Mortensen,) and she has worked her way into the DGA and to where she is from there. Anyway, every April 16 on whatever show she is on, everyone who wants to is to wear a Selena shirt to set that day and she puts the group photo on Facebook and Instagram. I’ve worn out about three or four actual Selena shirts by now and the only one I have left is one with a Lowrider on it that says “Anything For Selenas.” (From the movie, but Pete insists it’s a true story.). Anyway, I started to list off some songs of note and I do have my favorites, but to give you suggestions would mean I’d have to list them all. Cobarde’, Ven Conmigo, Cien Anos, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, No Me Queda Mas, (oh my GOD…) Dreaming Of You and several others off that album, they all find their way into my iPod quite regularly to this day. And I do post a picture of a candle flame composited with her in this outfit every April 16 on my Facebook page. We will commemorate her birthday, not her death day. Wow! She started out with my favorite Disco song. I must admit I was not familiar with her until she was killed. This is my first time seeing or hearing her preform. I honestly think she could have been on the level of Donna Summer or Celine Dion. Thank you P.J. without you featuring this I would have missed out. She never lost her energy! I saw her a few times live it was a whole new experience. Selena was a great performer she had a great voice and no auto tune. Than you for giving Latinos and Tejano music it’s due no one recognizes this beautiful music so many of us grew up on and still consider part of our culture.

Beauty, charisma, energy, and talent. She had it all. This was also my first time seeing Selena. It breaks my heart to think about how this beautiful young girl’s life was so needlessly taken.

Selena was going to be huge in the English market! No doubt! Up there with all of vocalist of the 90’s Mariah, Whitney, Celine, Michael etc. That was going to be her market. Her few English songs/performances are top notch 👌🏽 her voice/music are those that you don’t critique, but just admire.

She was a phenomenal talent. There is no limit to what she could have accomplished. Her ghost haunts us here in Corpus Christi, Tx. Her statue graces our bay front and coliseums named after her.

I saw her live 5 or 6 times at our local border fest and jalapeno festival, when she was just staring out then later at the alamodome in San Antonio Great times. Also she would sing this song called "tu que creias" and picked the guy next to me from the crowd. That could of been me! great times back then.

It is my opinion that if Selena had not died so young, she would have been a massive global star far beyond the world of Tejano, Latin, and even pop music. While already a huge star in the Tejano music scene, she was just beginning to connect with an even larger audience through her English language and pop recordings in the year or two prior to her death. Although I, personally, am exhausted just watching her sing out like that while managing to dance around the stage energetically, in those [bleep] high heels, no less. Her voice is indeed amazing. I went to many concerts at the Houston Rodeo in the Astrodome as I lived in Houston around 15 years. Sorry I missed this one. She is really good and it's a shame her life ended so soon.

Have you listened to Emilio Navaira? He is the King Of Tejano and actually opened up for Selena at this concert. He did Country too and have actually toured with country legends like Alan Jackson. He has a song called "even if i tried" that could be a radio banger now. He passed a way a few years ago but his music will live on forever. You should check him out.

I find it interesting that the story of her and her siblings is just like the story of the Jackson five and Michael Jackson’s rise to stardom. In someways she was the female Michael Jackson you even see it in her dance moves.

Just watched some dudes reaction to a Selena song and dude was wearing a Gang Starr tshirt and now I come here and you playing NY state of mind which is produced by Premier. I made the connection about Premo being from Houston and Selena being born about 45 minutes south of Houston. Tidbit about Selena’s band Los Dinos. Former keyboardist was a kid by the name of Mike Dean, Mike Dean went on to produce music for 2pac, Scarface, Travis Scott, Drake, Kanye, Weekend.. kinda crazy.

How sad of an event was her murder! I happened to be visiting Texas following the death of my father at the time. She could have become even more of a success had her life not been so tragically taken at the time.
