This is The Boy's first full on instrumental piece. What's even more mind-blowing is that this is a LIVE session on a closed sound stage (band practice, so to speak. 🤯) that was filmed. For another great instrumental try Leave That Thing Alone from the Time Machine Tour. (As a bass player myself, it's one of my favorites!)

This is a soundstage that they leased for awhile to shoot all their "official" videos during 1978/78. When they started recording at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec on the Permanent Waves album and Moving Pictures all "official" videos were shot there.

This is how bands from North America got their music heard in the days before MTV over in Europe. They would make a video of the band playing the song uninterrupted. Then TV channels would have a half an hour to an hour shows playing videos.

From a fellow North Texan, I loved your reaction to a great composition from a great band. This song premiered on "Hemispheres" (1978). And yes, for me, their earlier work was their best. This particular instrumental is a complete masterpiece. And the video you're watching is their "music video" but it is really just a straight performance of the song all the way through, without an audience, but also without video edits. It shows what great musicians they truly are to perform this challenging piece so perfectly. And, finally, the "cadence" you recognized is from the Benny Goodman Band's "Sing, Sing, Sing" featuring Gene Krupa on the drums.

That white guitar just sold for $384,000.00 lol This song changed over the years. It wouldn’t be unreasonable for you to react to a few other versions. I’m not sure which version I’d recommend from the 80s or 90s, but the one from Rush in Rio is fantastic and the one from R30 is great. They start it as a joke in a polka style then rip it. The song was so ambitious when the wrote it that they had to record it in 3 parts and then LEARN IT. Musicianship was always a priority and each of them will go down in history as one of the greatest in their fields. Geddy and Neil are widely considered the best. The only reason Alex isn’t quite there is that incredible guitarists are more common and he’s in a band with Geddy and Neil so it’s hard to stand out. He’s one of my three favorites ever.

There's a story behind that riff you were questioning. Long story short, that riff was nicked from a writer that scored that for a 1030's something movie. They later sent a check to the deceased writers estate. (It wasn't necessary, but that's the kind of guys they are).

FYI a piece of music without vocals is called an instrumental. When you think about it, apart from opera all classical music is instrumental. The word solo means one, so you can't have a solo with more than one person playing and a band playing without vocals is not a solo.

This was a "studio live" recording. Prior to this, they did the common practice of lip-syncing to the studio recording. With this album, they re-recorded this in the studio as if they were performing in front of an audience. This was their first instrumental, by the way. They had instrumental passages in songs, but had never recorded a pure instrumental. This was the first, and it was always a treat when another one would show up on an album ("YYZ", "Leave that Thing Alone", "The Main Monkey Business", etc.).

@8:25 - Yep, it's a fairly common thing for Rush, as you'll come to realize if you keep on scurrying down this little bunny-burrow :) @11:50 The song it reminds you of (and the riff is openly lifted from, as stated in the liner notes) is titled "Powerhouse", written by Raymond Scott, purchased outright by Warner Brothers studios way back when, and used in more Warner Brothers/Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies flicks than I can even begin to try counting. Has to be in the dozens, if not hundreds.

If you have around 20 minutes, I think you'll like "2112". I like the cartoon video because it has all of the words (including the parts that aren't sung). That really takes you on a journey! I think you'll also like "Working Man" - live in Cleveland. Natural Science, Vital Signs, Red Sector, Sprit of the Radio are killer too. There are sooo many to suggest! If you ever wonder what decade the video is... when Alex & Neil's hair is long & Neil has the moustache....it's the 70s. When they have short hair, it's the 80s and after that.

You just did my fave but you missed a few for sure! Try Leave That Thing Alone and Dude, Where's My Car? for instrumentals. In 2012 Rush released the Clockwork Angels album, with an 8 piece acoustic string ensemble for fill. The last song, The Garden, was said to have gotten them into the HOF, it certainly is worthy as a song about life. Just wondering if you've heard King Crimson, Yes, or Quicksilver Messenger Service... the hits and mind-blowers, not the dogs?

This one is my favorite instrumental of theirs. (Especially the version from Rio because we get Alex's improvised rant.) But yes, they have 8 instrumental pieces in total. In the 70's it was common for rock bands to put an instrumental on an album, so everyone can have a time to shine. Favorite vocal song is "Subdivisions".

So much timbre going on for 3 dudes, and these cats wrote for themselves first, they had to play these songs so they wanted to love them, hopefully the fans would be along for the ride, pick up new fans along the way; and Rush have no B-sides, no demos, no unreleased studio tracks, if a song idea wasn't working out, they'd drop it and forge ahead, maybe take a riff or idea from dropped tracks.

I think there is a general consensus about the Rush highlights. "By-tor and the Snowdog" and "The Necromancer" from their early period, showcases some of the hardest, most blistering lead guitar work from Alex. Their influence upon the fast aggressive metal that came later can be heard on those tunes, as well as their classic staple, 'Working Man'. There are many more epics waiting for you when you are ready, Lol...

Rush were amazing instrumentalists and sometimes they just liked to spread their wings and challenge themselves to things other bands would never do. But I wouldn't call it common. There are a number of instrumental recordings such as this one, YYZ, Where's My Thing, Leave That Thing Alone, and The Main Monkey Business. But they have 40 years of amazing music most of it has lyrics. The music piece you mentioned that you recognized was "Powerhouse" by Raymond Scott. It was used in WB cartoons. Interesting point about that piece, Rush didn't give credit to Scott and by the time his management notified them of the infringement, the statute of limitations had expired on the challenge. But Rush's management, out of deference to Mr. and Mrs. Scott (Raymond was still alive at that point), and being the class act that they are, offered a one-time "penance" payment, feeling it was the ethical thing to do.
